    BOHOL CEBU PALAWAN

    This is a one off

    experience that

    cannot be re-

    peated for the

    rest of our days.

    Join us and cele-

    brate the quin-

    centenary of the

    Christianisation of

    the Philippines.

The explorer Ferdinand Magellan, on his voyage

from Spain, landed in Cebu on March 12, 1521.

This was the beginning of the 500 year long history

of colonisation. Spain, being a strong Catholic

country, brought with them their faith and passed

it to the Filipino people. Today, Philippines is the

4th largest Christian country in the world, with 83%

of the population Christians contributing 30% of all

    Christians worldwide.

The first official Mass to be celebrated on Philip-

pines soil was on Easter Sunday in March 31st 1521.

The Mass was officiated by Father Pedro Valder-

rama, the Andalusian chaplain of the fleet. The

first group of early Filipinos to be baptized were

the King and Queen of Cebu along with 800 of

their subjects. After the baptism Magellan made a

gift of the Statue of the Santo Nino he brought

with him. Today, one of the biggest Catholic Festi-

vals is celebrated in honour of the baby Jesus

every 3rd Sunday in January. In 1565 another

Spanish expedition led by Miguel Lopez arrived.

He ordered everything to be burned but found

Santo Nino (Magellan’s gift to the Queen of Ce-

bu) among the rubble and following this he or-

dered a church to be built here. This church is the

oldest parish in the Philippines. Four hundred

years later, Pope Paul VI elevated the parish to a

Minor Basilica and to this day the basilica serves

millions of Filipino Catholics. We look back to

those events of 1521 as the beginning of the

strong, powerful and devout Catholic Faith that

    we have today.

    1521 - 2021 (a once in a lifetime event)

  • Day 5: Travel to mainland Cebu to view painting Exhibition Fer-nando Amorsolo. He is renowned as one of the most im-portant artists in the Philippines whose most recognizable anecdotal painting is the first baptism in the Philippines. Proceed to SM/Ayala Mall (Philippine has two of the largest shopping Malls in the world) for shopping and lunch here. Free to explore on your own. We are sure there is some-thing that will catch your eye. On the way home we visit Taoist Temple. Dinner and return to hotel.

Day 6: Today, we attend The re-enactment of the first baptism in the Minor Basilica. There will be 500 children to be bap-tised together with children who have special needs. After-wards, we then participate in the downtown heritage walk passing through historical buildings including churches. There will also be simultaneous Easter Masses held to commemorate the first ever recorded Easter Mass held on April 14, 1521. Note: this schedule is subject to change.

Day 7: Cebu/Puerto Princesa/El Nido Early departure to Palawan arriving in Puerto Princesa air-port. We will be transported by a local mini van to El Nido where we will stay for 2 nights. (4 hour drive). Evening din-ner will be at a local restaurant. Bring something to read, or watch a film on your phone to occupy your mind. Or just watch the world go by. Generally there are many beautiful beaches throughout the archipelago of the Philippines and Palawan has that little more that make it extra special, it’s voted the best island in the world for 3 executive years by Travel & Leisure maga-zine's awards. It’s famous for its sugary white sandy beach-es / clear crystal and pristine waters, surrounded by 45 is-lands and islets in El Nido alone.

ITINERARY Day 1: Depart London for Cebu (with one stop). Meals and beverages will be served on board the aircraft. Day 2: Arrive in Cebu. Check-in to our hotel. Evening dinner at a local restaurant. Day 3: Tour of Cebu City & Mactan Island After breakfast, we visit Lapu-Lapu Monument/Shrine. Ac-cording to history, Lapu-Lapu (head of Chief) defeated Fer-dinand Magellan during the battle that took place on the island on 27th April 1521. He was considered the first na-tive to resist imperialism by Spanish conquest. Travel to mainland Cebu to visit the Minor Basilica Del Santo Nino (Holy Child of Jesus) that houses the miraculous child where we can view and say a prayer. To this day, Philip-pines celebrates the biggest annual Festival held every 2nd week of January in honour of the Infant Child Jesus. From here, we view another historic site - Magellan’s Cross. It was planted when he first arrived in Cebu as a symbol of Christianity. Moving on, walk to Fort San Pedro/Plaza Inde-pendencia- the oldest colonial Fort in the Philippines it was built by Miguel Legazpi (a Spanish leader) to keep local warriors at bay. We see the Cebu Heritage Monument, and the oldest Colon Street in the Philippines. The Spanish colonisation ended in August 13th 1898 and USA took over for another 48 years. This fort was used as their residence as well as for educating the locals. Lunch will be at a local restaurant. Last stop will be at SM Shop-ping Mall and lunch here. Free to look around this vast shopping Mall where everything is much cheaper com-pared to the UK (although imported products are more ex-pensive). Return to the hotel and overnight. Day 4: Bohol/Mactan/Cebu Early departure to Bohol by ferry boat and take the mini van to see the famous iconic Chocolate Hills where we go up to the top of one of the multitude of mounds extending into the horizon (absolutely stunning scenery). We will also stop at the Tarsier Sanctuary to see the smallest primate endemic in this area and possibly a quick visit to the fa-mous white sandy Panglao beach. Travel back to Cebu. Evening dinner will be at a local restaurant. Magellan Cross - Cebu

    Sanctuary of Simala

  • Day 8: Palawan/El Nido Breakfast at the hotel. To maximise your short visit today, we will do island hopping that will bring you closer to some of the most beautiful islands and viewing other inhabited islets that we pass by along the way. We have lunch on one of the islands when the boat stops. Return to the hotel and shower and a little rest. Evening dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 9: Palawan/Cebu We say goodbye to this beautiful island and travel back to Puerto Princesa airport. Arrive in Cebu and check-in to our hotel. Evening dinner at the local restaurant. Day 10: Simala Shrine ‘The Monastery of the Holy Eucharist’

This Shrine was built by Marian Monks who fled from the north to escape from the eruption of Mt Pinatobo and start a new life in Cebu. During the Eucharistic Adoration they handed over the image of Our Lady they had brought with them. There was hardship along the way where the locals resented their presents until one day during their Peniten-tial Rosary Walk to stave off an epidemic that killed several children in the area, Our Lady interceded and secondly their was a claim that Our Lady shed tears 3 times. As of today, from the humble beginnings, the struggle, hard work and their strong Faith made the monastery grandeur as it is seen today. Simala Shrine is the most visited Holy Sitesin the Philippines. Day 11: Lapulapu/Cebu City You have a full day of shopping today. There are plenty of souvenirs you can buy a lot cheaper than back home. One thing to watch out for is your luggage allowance. Enjoy shopping.
