Nobel Peace Prize brings littleimpetus for peace in India and Pakistan

NEW DELHI: New Nobel peacelaureate Malala Yousafzai wastedlittle time living up to the accoladelast week, inviting the leaders of In-dia and Pakistan to accompany herand fellow winner KailashSatyarthi, an Indian child rights ac-tivist, to the award ceremony.

But, just hours later, a freshexchange of fire between troops inKashmir provided a stark reminderthat the prospect of lasting peace

remains as distant as ever. The offices of Prime Min-

ister Narendra Modi and his Paki-stani counterpart Nawaz Sharif bothdeclined this week to say whetherthey would accept Malala's over-ture.

It is a diplomatic hot potato, given the fractious relationship be-tween the nuclear-armedneighbours, who have fought threewars since partition in 1947.

100 years ago when Australiantroops in World War I set out onthe long voyage to Europe’s war-front they took along an appledeveloped in Australia. It had agood taste and stored well, butbefitting its down-under origin, also had a topsy-turvy appear-ance.

When apples are greenit usually means they are unripe, hard and sourly inedible, butGranny Smith apples glowedbright green, yet had a crisp tex-ture and a refreshing sweet-sourtaste. Most fruits that seem so un-ripe would never sell, yet GrannySmiths are the exception.

WWI took them to thewider world and they have be-come iconic. The Beatles used ahalved Granny Smith as the logoof their Apple Records and innu-merable toothpaste ads haveshown gleaming white teethcrunching into a Granny Smith. There are other edible greenapples, but the vivid green ofGranny Smiths now stands for‘apple green’, their aroma is usedin perfumes and their freshflavour in candies and vodka.

Long before MasterChefand macadamias , Granny Smithswere the first famous Australianfood export. As often happenswith apples, their origin was purechance. Apples rarely grow iden-tical from their seed, but alwaystend to mutate and change. Goodnew varieties have often beenfound growing wild, with no ideaof parentage and among similarwild trees, each slightly different

and all mostly inedible, except for th at go o d one.The standardisedapples we see in the market are notgrown from seed, but are clones, grafted from the original tree.

Maria Ann Smith was thewife of a poor farm labourer in En-gland who in 1838 signed on witha British government scheme tocolonise Australia. They settled nearSydney, growing produce to sell inthe city, and also tried new variet-ies, like French crab apples, small, sour relatives of regular apples thatgrow wild and are used for cook-ing. Smith discarded some near herhouse, from where they seeded andgrew, having possibly pollinatedwith a domestic apple at some pointto create this unlikely hybrid.

Smith found it one day, tasted and liked the fruit. She de-veloped it from cuttings and in 1868showed it to other horticulturistswho also started growing it. Shedied two years later, but by then thevariety was already known asGranny Smith. Australia startedgrowing them on a large scale andby the time WWI came had enoughfor export. Granny Smith sales havegrown steadily since, not least be-cause their good storage qualitiesmade them ideal for long distancetransportation.Recently, GrannySmiths have also been found to beparticularly healthy, high in antioxi-dants, but low in calories. It is onereason they sell in India, but also, Ithink, there is the sheer surprise oftheir taste. Imported apples areflooding our markets, and they of-ten look great, but have a blandlysweet taste and mushy texture.

Living Near A Busy Road Increasesthe Risk of Sudden Cardiac Death

According to the new study, living near the major roads in-creases the risk of suddencardiac death in women.

In this study, data ofmore than 107,000 Americanwomen was collected. Theyhad the average age of 60years and took part in theNurses’ Health Study startedin the year 1986 and ended in2012. Among them, 523women faced sudden cardiacdeath.

It was found that therisk of sudden cardiac deathwas about 38 percent higherin the women living in thearea 50 meters away fromthe major roads than thewomen living at least 500meters away.

Every 100 meter dis-tance increased the risk ofsudden cardiac death up to 6percent.The details of this study have

been published in the journalCirculation on October 13.

In the journal newsrelease, study author JaimeHart, an instructor in medicineat Brigham and Women’sHospital and Harvard Medi-cal School in Boston, said thatliving near a major road couldincrease the sudden cardiacdeath risk in the same wayas obesity, smoking and pooreating habits.

The researchers re-

ported that living near thebusy roads increases air pol-lution exposure.

It is not the first studyassociating heart disease withliving near a major highway.Another study published in theJournal of the AmericanHeart Association earlier thismonth found that living in thevicinity of the major highwayincreased the high blood pres-sure risk in postmenopausalwomen.

Mangalyaan sends pictureof Mars’ moon Phobos

India’s maiden spacecraft toMars, Mangalyaan, has cap-tured the image of Phobos, the larger and closer of thetwo natural satellites of theRed Planet.

Both moons of Marswere discovered in 1877.Phobos, a small, irregularlyshaped object with a meanradius of 11km, is seven timeslarger than Mars' outer moon,Deimos.

“The larger of thetwo Martian moons, Phobos,is seen travelling west to eastover Mars in its typical orbit. The images were taken froman altitude of 66,275km,” In-dian Space ResearchOrganisation (Isro) said onFacebook on Tuesday.OnOctober 7, Mangalyaan hadsent a full disc image of Mars, taken by the Mars ColorCamera, from an altitude of66,543km.

The spacecraft hadbeamed its first photos ofMars’ crater-marked surfacea day after India successfullyput the probe into the RedPlanet’s orbit.

Soon after, Isro haduploaded the regional duststorm activities over northernhemisphere of the RedPlanet, captured by MarsColour Camera. The imagewas taken from an altitude of74,500km from the surface ofMars.

India joined an ex-clusive global club of deepspace explorers on Septem-ber 24 when the indigenouslymade spacecraft successfullyslipped into the orbit aroundMars after a 10-month jour-ney on a relatively shoe-stringbudget.

Mangalyaan's scien-tific goals include using fivesolar-powered instruments togather data that will help de-termine how Mars weathersystems work and what hap-pened to the water that isbelieved to have once existedon the planet in large quanti-ties.

It will also searchMars for methane, a keychemical in life processes onEarth that could also comefrom geological processes.

UN's snub to Pak a great diplomatictriumph for Modi govt: BJP

JAMMU: BJP on Tuesday hailed theUnited Nation's snub to Pakistan onraising Kashmir issue, as a diplo-matic triumph for the Narendra Modigovernment.

"The refusal of UNGA totake cognizance of the nasty letterof Sartaj Aziz and it's big 'no' to Pa-kistani suggestions that it should in-tervene so that the so-called Kash-mir issue is resolved as per the aspi-rations of Kashmiri people is a bigslap on the face of the Pakistani po-litical and military establishments,"Prof Hari Om, political adviser to BJPstate president told reporters here onTuesday. Sartaj Aziz, adviser to Pa-kistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharifon national security and foreign af-

fairs, had written to UN SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-moon on the recentborder tension with India and soughtthe UN's intervention, stepping up itsattempts to internationalize the Kash-mir issue.

The UN chief last week is-sued a statement encouraging Indiaand Pakistan to resolve all differencesthrough dialogue and engage con-structively to find a long-term solu-tion for peace and stability in Kash-mir.

"The UN's decision to nottake any cognizance of Aziz's letterto Ban Ki-moon is yet another out-standing diplomatic triumph of PrimeMinister Modi," Om said.

The BJP leader said UN only

vindicated the Indian stand thatJammu and Kashmir was a bilateralissue that needed to be resolved bythe two neighbours in accordancewith the 1972 Simla Agreement.

The UN's refusal to inter-vene also constituted a big snub forKashmiri separatists like Syed AliShah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq,Yasin Malik, Shabir Shah and oth-ers, Om added.

"Indian nation is in safehands. It ultimately got the govern-

ment it needed the most to showPakistan, an irresponsible non-stateand epicenter of global terrorism, itsrightful place and obtain for it a sta-tus in t e comity of self-respectingnations."The Narendra Modi government hasproved in just 100 days that it meansserious business, that it would not tol-erate anything non-sense and that itis committed to upholding the unityand territorial integrity of India at anycost," Om said.
