Past Presidents

You are the best! If you are reading this, you have an interest and/or investment in Variety. With folks like you, Variety is able to help many children from around the state become healthier, safer and happier. We gather on March 8th and 9th to put on the largest telethon in Iowa showcasing our success for 2007 – 08. At the heart of the telethon are our VIP (Very Interested Person) panels that raise more than a million dollars annually.

Variety was very fortunate to benefit from two major events in 2007, the Hy-Vee Triathlon and the Principal Charity Classic presented by Wells Fargo. Both organizations are phenomenal. These lead the way for many other great events throughout the year put on by both Variety and Young Variety.

Please join me in thanking the Variety executive committee, board of directors, staff, and all of our dedicated volunteers who have served on numerous committees and as VIP’s and phone panels. A special thanks goes to the O’Donnell Family for presenting the proceeds from their Annual O’Donnell & Friends Open to Young Variety. The money raised allowed us to provide a Sunshine Coach for Orchard Place and a Sunshine Bus for Link Associates. The O’Donnell’s are a good family with a huge heart which allows them to help local charities for the past 14 years.

Please thank this year’s Honorary Chairs, Barry and Michele Griswell. We couldn’t be more pleased to have Barry and Michele on board. They are dedicated through Variety to improving the lives of Iowa¹s special needs children. Thank you Barry and Michele!!

As we approach the telethon, we all must remember that the needs of Iowa’s children have never been greater. Our goal is to take Variety - The Children’s Charity to new heights so we might serve the needs of thousands of children who want what we all treasure; comfortable, productive, and happy lives. It is our responsibility as the largest children’s charity in Iowa to raise lots of money so we might help more children than ever.

Thanks for all you do,

Steve Eden

Memories for 240 Iowa children will include a brand new bicycle and helmet. These

are children who come from families who could not otherwise afford bikes. Thanks to

Variety – the Children’s Charity, each child received a new bicycle, safety helmet and

lock during Variety’s Bikes for Kids giveaway events in Burlington, Des Moines,

Johnston, Newton, Panora and West Des Moines.

The Eastern Iowa committee of Variety has worked hard to reach children in

numerous communities throughout their area also. The Bikes For Kids Program gave

away 73 bicycles, helmets and bike locks on a hot July day at the Hy-Vee on

First Avenue in Cedar Rapids.

A Bikes For Kids event was held at the Hy-Vee on Dodge Street in Dubuque in

December. Despite the cold and snow, all the “winners” had smiles on their faces as

they received their first new bike. The local Wal-Mart has become a great partner in

making these events happen. Next year, we are hoping to have a bike rodeo at the

Hy-Vee in Waterloo.

These bicycles were paid for by sponsors who donated $100 per bicycle. To sponsor

the purchase of a bike for a child, call 515-243-4660 or email

[email protected].

Capital Scare - First EVER Halloween Costume Bash at Capital Square. It was spooktacular to see all of the amazing costumes, and Schaffer’s Bridal and Boesen’s the Florist were a HUGE help!

November - Membership Drive - This was our 2nd annual membership drive to help raise money through our 600 person email base.

5th Annual Valentine Soiree Wear your heart on your sleeve for this elegant night of fun, live music, silent & live auction, food, drinks and dancing. Hosted this year by Wakonda Country Club, sponsored by Iowa Diamond and Juice! Considered our signature event, we had 250 people there and raised double what we raised last year! This year has been a great year, and I look forward to the next!I love the energy of Young Variety, and we are on a mission to raise more money than we have ever raised before!
