Dear Leaders of the Commonwealth,

As state employees, we work together each day to make Kentucky the greatest version of itself possible. Our roles may be varied and cabinet functions distinct, but we all make a significant difference. We lead by caring for others, devoting our time and talents, and lending a helping hand.

Kentucky Employees Charitable Campaign (KECC) provides a great opportunity to put this leadership into practice. Charities represented by KECC improve academic achievement, provide medical care to children, and rebuild communities after disasters strike.

I am humbled to serve as this year’s KECC Chair. The reason I selected Servant Leadership as our campaign theme, is because I believe servant leaders are dedicated to the well-being of their community in a way no one else can be.

It is time for all of us to step up and lead by example. Your generous, voluntary participation in KECC will touch the lives of those who need it most throughout the Commonwealth, including people and families in your community. Voluntary donations of any size help those in need during their darkest hours. Even more importantly, you will be helping Kentuckians reach their fullest potential.

Thank you for your consideration of this opportunity. As citizens, we should take our state motto to heart: “United We Stand, Divided We Fall.” By working together, we can create a Kentucky that shines like a beacon for the entire world to see and emulate.

Sincerely,

Governor Matthew G. Bevin2016 KECC Chair

The WHAS Crusade for Children improves the future of children with special needs by inspiring people to give and awarding grants.

America’s most successful local telethon!

@CrusadeChildren#WHASCrusade

29

WHAS Crusade for Children520 West Chestnut St. Louisville, KY 40202

(502) 582-7706 www.whascrusade.org

The Crusade helps children in all Kentucky counties!

100% for the kids!

The Crusade has granted over $170 million and helped millions of children.

The Crusade’s annual average donations of $5 million are only able to fund one-third of the up to $15 million in grant requests from Kentucky schools, hospitals and agencies.

Change a child’s life!

One hundred percent of every donation made in Kentucky stays in Kentucky to help schools, hospitals, and agencies that provide direct services to children with special needs.

Every penny counts!

YES! I want to help my fellow Kentuckians. 3 A pledge form will be provided by a campaign volunteer, a

fellow state employee. Only one form is required, even if you decide to support more than one charity. You can also get a pledge form at KECC.org.

3 Most people like to give through payroll deduction. It’s easy and lets you spread your gift over the course of a whole year.

3 Contributions can also be made with cash or check. Just clip them to your pledge form. Checks should be made payable to: KECC (Kentucky Employees Charitable Campaign).

3 Remember that your contribution to KECC may be tax-deductible (check with your accountant to make sure).

Why the KECC Charities? The KECC Charities undergo rigorous scrutiny by the Personnel Cabinet and have met stringent guidelines. They are well-managed and accountable and they help people right here in the Commonwealth.

These federations represent over a thousand charitable programs, and when you flip through the following pages, you will find that they touch all our lives.

Whether you know someone struggling to regain mobility after an accident, a family member who recently lost their job, a loved one who is suffering from Alzheimer's Disease, or you want to make sure your kids start school ready to succeed...your pledge can help make the difference.

Most importantly, 100% of collected pledges goes directly to help others when you give to one of the partner charities.

Can I give to other charities? Yes, however, since the partner charities pay all KECC expenses, there is a 10 percent fee charged to non-partner charities to help offset the processing costs of these pledges. To avoid this, you may wish to donate directly to that charity or consider giving to one of the KECC partner charities.

You may direct your gift to any 501(c)(3) organization by providing KECC with their address on the pledge form. To help hold down administrative costs, these gifts to other “write-in” charities must be at least a $50 cash gift or a payroll gift of $3 per paycheck.

THANK YOU STATE EMPLOYEES!

Be a Leader! One percent is all it takes to become a leadership giver! Every donation changes lives, but as you decide how you want to pledge this year, please consider joining the leadership circle. The chart below shows just how little it takes to make a big difference through leadership giving.

Want to do more? Become a Cornerstone Society Member. If you want to make an even bigger difference in your community, KECC has a unique leadership program just for you. It’s called the Cornerstone Society. Any pledge of $1,000 or more is considered a Cornerstone Gift. That’s just $41.67 or more per paycheck. Talk to your KECC coordinator about obtaining a Cornerstone Society pledge card, fill it out and turn it in. It’s that easy, and it will help so many!

“Why should I release my name?” When KECC sends payment to the charity of your choice, they only know who made the gift if you give us permission to release your name and contact information on the pledge form. If your pledge is directed to one or all of the KECC Charities, they will not use or release your information in any way other than to thank you.

What is ‘pledge loss,’ and how does it affect my payroll deduction donation?Sometimes state employees make good-faith payroll deduction pledges to various charities through KECC, but are unable to fulfill them. In most cases, these employees retire or change careers before their payroll deduction pledge is fulfilled. Because of this, KECC does not receive the full donation. The campaign cannot pass along funds it does not collect to the charities; therefore, all the charities share the actual amount of the pledge loss on payroll deduction pledges. The percent uncollected each year is small, averaging eight percent.

When will the charity of my choice receive the contributions I make?Cash pledges are sent in the first quarter following the end of the campaign. Because payroll deduction allows you to spread your donation over the course of a year, we put your gift to use right away -- donations to the partner charities are sent quarterly. Other “write-in” designations will be sent once all of the payroll deductions have been collected. Questions? Get the facts! Call us at 502-589-2296.

CHILD DEVELOPMENTIn a region with relatively few high-quality child development centers, our Child and Family Development Centers create a place for local children that is safe and educational. Both of CAP’s centers are accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and are among the highest rated centers in Kentucky’s early childhood rating system, “STARS for KidsNow.” Children who learn to feel positively about

themselves and gain a sense of responsibility for their families and their peers will be more likely to realize their full potential as teenagers and adults.

MAKE A DIFFERENCEHayden Siler might look like your average third

grader — the 8-year-old likes to dance and loves being a big sister. Deep in her heart, though, Hayden is an artist. For nearly two years, Hayden, who has Cystic Fibrosis, has created one-of-a-kind abstract paintings, which she sells at auctions and art shows to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. “I get really excited when people buy my paintings. Sometimes I jump up and down,” Hayden said. “When people buy the paintings, I know they are helping me and kids like me.”

To date, she has sold 17 works and has raised more than $6,500 to help support the search for a cure.

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a life-threatening genetic disease that primarily affects the lungs and digestive system. An estimated 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide) have CF. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is the world’s leader in the search for a cure for CF. The Foundation funds lifesaving research and works to provide access to quality, specialized care and effective treatments for people with CF. Nearly every CF drug available today was made possible because of Foundation support. Through its efforts, the life expectancy of a child with CF has doubled in the last 30 years, and research to find a cure is more promising than ever before. The Foundation is one of many agencies funded through CHC.

INCOMEWHAT THIS PLACE NEEDS:

United Way helps people achieve financial stability

A good job benefits more than the job holder — it benefits his or her family, neighborhood and entire community. When we’re on solid financial ground, we’re more likely to have access to good-quality heath care, provide a good education for our kids, and contribute to our local economy. That’s why United Way focuses on lasting income solutions (that go beyond charity) to help people build skills and education necessary to get, keep and advance in a good job. And that’s why in Kentucky, we engage with dozens of partners from all sectors to offer financial wellness, coaching and planning to help anyone better manage their income, savings and assets.

HEALTHWHAT THIS PLACE NEEDS:

Healthy communities are strong communities

Being healthy isn’t just about personal diet and exercise choices. Healthy communities are ones that maintain parks and bike paths all across town, where all kids have access to safe playgrounds, eat healthy meals at school and engage in physical activity. Healthy communities support innovations like farmers’ markets in low-wage neighborhoods to offer more access to fresh food. In healthy communities, everyone has access to good medical care, fosters an active lifestyle and encourages people to care for and support each other.

United Way is helping make it happen, with your support.

EDUCATION

Education Benefits Kids and CommunitiesEducation is a cornerstone for success in school, work and life. It also benefits the whole community: High school graduates have higher earning potential, contribute more to their local economies, are more engaged in their communities, and are more likely to raise kids who also graduate, and go on to higher education or work.

United Way is about more than short-term charity for a few; we’re about lasting solutions that build opportunity for all. We look at the big picture to assess which resources are lacking or need strengthening, then we address those gaps to keep kids on track to graduation and beyond.

In Kentucky, only half of our kids are prepared for kindergarten. That’s not good enough. Every child deserves a good start in school and life. Through the work of many initiatives, including the United Way Born Learning Academy—which helps parents, grandparents and caregivers turn everyday moments into fun, educational opportunities for young kids—the 22 United Ways in the Commonwealth are bringing thousands of people together to solve the education puzzle and build stronger communities.

WHAT THIS PLACE NEEDS:

At just seven weeks old, Lexi was diagnosed with infantile botulism, an illness that can occur when an infant ingests bacteria that produce a toxin inside the body. Not only is it rare (fewer than 100 cases occur in the United States each year), it is frightening because it causes severe muscle weakness and breathing problems.

After spending eight long weeks in an incubator, Lexi’s parents, Andrea and Casey, were finally able to take their baby home. Unfortunately, they also took home an astronomical hospital bill. Kosair Charities stepped in and took care of Lexi’s medical bills. They also followed up with the family to make sure they had everything they needed by reaching out to therapists who worked with Lexi on speech, occupational and physical therapy for several months.

Today, Lexi is just like any other little girl. She loves animals, reading and being a Girl Scout. She’s full of life and at the ripe old age of 7, she’s a wonderful big sister to siblings Silas, Layla-Cate and Sully.

A FIGHTING CHANCE FOR EVERY BABY™

Every year in the United States, more than half a million babies are born too soon, over 7,000 of them right here in Kentucky. With your help, we work to improve the health of babies and support families if something does go wrong.

The March of Dimes has one goal: to help babies in every community start life in the healthiest way possible. Through education and intervention, we help moms-to-be learn how to take care of themselves before, during and after their pregnancy.

We are also there when things don’t go as planned, providing comfort and information to families when a baby is born too soon.

commitments helped:

• Equip 73,622 Kentuckians with educational resources and materials on topics such as parenting, discipline, never shake

a baby, and recognizing signs and symptoms of child abuse or neglect. • Provide 310 individuals with support on 1-800-CHILDREN.

• Conduct 108 presentations educating 3,367 individuals on child abuse and neglect prevention.

• Serve parents and caregivers 14,396 times through parent education and support services.

The following services were provided by PCAK during the 2014-2015 Fiscal Year.

In 2015, 54,177 reports, in Kentucky, met criteria for further assessment or investigation by the Cabinet for Health and Family Services. Of those reports, 26,926 children were found to be victims of child abuse and neglect or in need of protection services.

Today, Lexi is just like any other little girl. She loves animals, reading and being a Girl Scout. She’s full of life and at the ripe old age of 7, she’s a wonderful big sister to siblings Silas, Layla-Cate and Sully.

HUNGER RELIEFThe food insecurity rate in CAP’s service area is 17.9%. We are committed to ensuring that children and their families, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities in the region do not go without food, clothing, and other essential items. Grateful Bread Food Pantry, Grateful Threadz Thrift Store, and Operation Sharing are making a positive and lasting difference in the lives of people in need in Appalachia by helping them meet their most basic needs.

HOUSING The substandard housing rate in Eastern Kentucky is 46%. Our Housing Program provides home repair and reconstruction services to participants on a year-round basis, providing safe, warm, and dry housing for families and individuals who otherwise could not afford adequate living conditions.

YOU are compassionately impacting the lives of people in need in Appalachia!
