Chapter 1 - Introducing the Bearded Dragon
Any agamid lizard in the genus Pogona is commonly known as BeardedDragon. These varieties of lizards are popular exotic pets in many places,
especially the Inland Bearded Dragon. Bearded Dragons are fast becomingpopular amongst pet owners and may soon be more common pets than greeniguanas ( Iguana iguana )
Bearded Dragons, also known as the Lizard of Oz , have broad triangular headsand flattened bodies, with adults reaching approximately 50cms (19.5 inches)head-to-tail. Males are slightly longer than females, with females tending to beslightly heavier. The species of Bearded Dragons get their name from adistinctive series of lateral spines (specialized scales) radiating horizontally fromthe head and base of the tail. As juveniles, they are semi-arboreal. As adults, they are mostly terrestrial, but climb to bask and search for prey. They inhabitmostly open woodlands, scrub, and desert.
Bearded Dragons can puff out the spiny protrusions under their chin beardwhen they feel threatened or angry, making the dragon look more intimidatingand giving them the appearance of having a humanlike beard. They may bobtheir heads or wave either of their forearms as communication.

Chapter 2 - Selecting the Right BeardedDragon
Do Beardies Make Good Pets?
Bearded Dragons make some of the best reptile pets. They reach amanageable size of about 18-22 inches and only require a 40-75 gallon
enclosure. However, getting a Bearded Dragon is a serious commitment. Theycan live from 5-12 years in captivity. There are several reasons why you shouldchoose a Bearded Dragon as your pet:
They are quite easy to take care of They are very gentle and loyal They are docile, hardy and tame. They are one of the few reptiles that
seem to enjoy this type of attention Bearded Dragons are easy to handle
They are manageable, due to their small size Its a very suitable pet if you have kids Bearded dragons are easy to keep and handle, though it is
recommended that a beginner owner start with a juvenile rather than ahatchling.
8 things to consider before buying a bearded
dragonBefore deciding on buying a Bearded Dragon, you should consider a few things:

Find Out About Bearded Dragon- The Ultimate Guide
Never buy on impulse. You are in a store and see a lovelydragon and immediately decide to get it. Most of the dragonssold this way, will die within one year.
You are walking through a mom and pop pet store and comeacross a terrarium with bearded dragons. You notice theawfully conditions and feel bad for the animals. So, you decideto buy on the instant. This way you will save the poor animalfrom the horrible cage. Think twice before do this! Actually, these stores use the tactic of a pity purchase such as rescuinga bearded dragon in hope to sell more dragons. If you buy theanimal you will help them survive and sell another and another animal. In the same conditions.
2. Do you know how to deal them?
Always get care information before you buy your reptile andbring it home. Learn everything you find about housing, feeding, caring and the diseases beardies get. Get moreinformation sources books, magazines and personalexperiences of experts and owners.
Many areas of care are controversial, opinions vary, andherpetoculture is still in its infancy. Consult more than onesource and make up your own mind. And remember there arealways exceptions in biology. What works for one and his/her reptiles does not always work for every people. Every housingclimate is different and every animal in any given species isdifferent. What works in a dry, warm climate does not alwayswork in a tropical one. Of course, if animals are kept outdoorsthere are other differences as well.
3. Do you exactly know what you have to do?
Organize before you get the animal. Create a list and go getthe equipment you need. Set up the cage properly. Find atrusty source for the crickets. Check grocery stores which sellthe right vegetables. See the bonused check list for details.
4. Do you have access to fast professional medical help?

Another very important factor you need to keep in mind is whether or not you have a qualified Herp Vet in your area that will be ableto care for your new pet if it gets sick. As also, newly acquiredBearded Dragons should always have a fecal sample tested for parasites and a general health checkup. It is also a good idea tohave them retested for parasites at least once a year.
5. Will you have the time to feed, upkeep the cage and clean up after abearded dragon, daily, during its life?
You will need a certain amount of time to care for the beardie. Itisn't much, but there is. You will have to feed the dragon at leastevery day (especially when they are young). This will take sometime and inconvenience.
You wont be able to travel somewhere for long periods of timeand leave the dragon at home. It is also difficult to find a personwilling to handle crickets or worms to feed your dragons while youare away.
6. Do you have the money to care for a bearded dragon?
Even though bearded dragons are relatively cheap, they eatlike beasts, especially when young, and this will cost you a lotof money (vegetables, crickets, fruits, mealworms, supplements). Costs associated with raising a Bearded Dragonare plenty, the most expensive being the UV light they requireand their food items. The UV light also needs to be replacedaround every six months which is also going to cost a bit of money. And let's not forget trips to the vet. These may also
add up over the years of your dragons life. So this hobby canbecome costly.
7. Are you willing to commit to a Bearded Dragon during its lifetime?
You are responsible for the life of your pets. If they are sick, get them to a vet. If they are hungry, feed them. Animal abuseis a felony in many states and you should remember that.

8. Are you willing to keep mealworms in the fridge and live insects inyour home?
This one can be really a difficult problem. You should alsodiscuss it with the other people that you live together.
Choosing a BD
When you decide to buy a bearded dragon, whether from a breeder or petstore, you need to look it over carefully. Some things you should notice rightaway is how alert and active the dragon is. Do not buy a beardie which looks tobe lethargic and is unable to lift its head. The beardies should watch you withinterest as you walk up to the enclosure and should also have bright and alerteyes.
Before deciding which Bearded Dragon to buy, do ensure thatyou check them for sores, burns, external parasites or anydeformities. Make sure that there is no pus or other gunk builtup in the eyes, nose or mouth area also. Sometimes shopkeepers sell Beardies with missing toes or bits of their tail. This
is not a case of concern and neither will they cause theBeardies any discomfort. However, only buy such Dragons if the wound looks healed and shows no sign of infection.
One of the most important things is to look at the size of theBeardie. It is generally not recommended to buy Beardies that are less than sixinches in total length. Baby Beardies can be very fragile and more apt tobecome ill or overly stressed. It is much easier to care for a more developedBearded Dragon. If you are a beginner owner it is highly recommended to startwith a juvenile rather than a hatchling. Anyway, never pick the smallest beardedno matter how cute he may be.
For the best health and well being of your new pet, it is important to remember to take it directly home. If you have more shopping to complete, consider picking up your pet last. This will ensure the animal encounters the leastamount of stress possible. Have the new terrarium completely set up beforebringing your new friend "home". Additionally, make sure your new familymember is allowed enough time to adjust to its new home. Wait three or four days before attempting to handle your pet and always supervise children whenthey interact with pets.

Where to Buy a Beardie?
There are some good places where you can buy a bearded dragon from. Thereare also just as many people who would like nothing more than to take your money. The best option is to buy it direct from a local breeder as you can seethe lizards and mingle with them. You will get a healthier dragon and will also beable to choose from multiple colors than in any other place.
You should find a "reputable breeder" and by this I mean one that has been
around for awhile or has a good track record. If you cannot locate a localbreeder, do a Google search on Bearded Dragon Lizard Breeders. Always seekreferences from any breeder and follow up on them. Search for a Reptile Show, there will always be breeders there.
Another good place to find that new dragon is a reptile pet store. These arestores that do nothing else but sell reptiles and reptile supplies. These are greatplaces to find quality pets and usually good advice.
The places that you might want to avoid all together are small mom and poppet stores. You might find some that offer great pets and sound advice, but for the most part you won't. There are, exceptions, but for the most part you willwant to avoid getting your dragon here.
Usually in smaller pet stores aquariums and fish are the big sellers. If reptilesare included in these stores, they are usually in the back or an afterthought. Youmight also notice that they aren't very clean, and poorly lit. The dragons you getfrom these places will probably be sick, and won't live long after you get themhome.
