MAT MASTER ™ CIRCLE CUTTER#14513 PERFECT BEVEL CUTS EVERYTIME
The FrameCo Mat MasterTM Circle Cutter is an innovative new tool, which utilises
many of the existing FrameCo mat cutters. The Mat MasterTM Circle Cutter Arm
consists of a swivel point, calibrated scale and turning handle. The kit includes all
the fittings to attach the FrameCo #201 Bevel Cutter, for cutting bevelled circles
and arcs as in the pictures shown here. Attachments are also available to mount a
pencil or coloured pen and the GrooveMasterTM for making circular V-Grooves.

How to cut a single circle in a mat
1. Cut a mat to the size you require. Determine the center point of the mat by ruling a
line from opposite corners on the back of the board. If you want your circle in the middle
of your mat, then spike the center point (where the two lines meet) so it can be seen
from the front. Note: By spiking above or below the centre point you will move the
resulting circle up or down. fig. 1. & 2.
2. Place a scrap piece of board under the mat to be cut. This scrap piece needs to be aslarge as your mat to support it while you cut and to ensure you do not damage your table
top. Remember you cut from the front of the mat. fig. 3.
3. Set the diameter for the circle you wish to cut by loosening the pivot handle (turn it anti-
clockwise) and sliding it along the Mat MasterTM Circle Cutter Arm. When the indicator
reaches the desired diameter tighten the pivot handle (turn it clockwise). The markings
on the Mat MasterTM Cutter Arm are half scale, so if you place the indicator at the 28cm
- 11 inch mark the circle cut will be 28cm - 11 inches in diameter. Press the spike firmly
into the top mat at the center point. The spike will penetrate through the several layers.
fig. 4.
4. You cut the circles by pushing the cutting head anticlockwise. Hold the cutter head with
one hand and the edge of the mats with your other hand. fig. 5.
5. As you start to push the blade down into the mat, start also to spin the mat in the
opposite direction. ie clockwise. Always keep the cutting action smooth and do not
release the blade from the mat you are cutting. fig. 5.
6. As you near the completion of your circle cut slow down the cutting a little and with
larger circles move your hand to hold the center drop-out so that it does not move,
otherwise it could tear the last part of the cut. fig. 6.
How to cut a double circle mat
1. Cut the outside dimensions for the two coloured mat boards required for the double
circular mat. Determine the centre point for the bottom or fillet mat of the mat by ruling
a line from opposite corners on the back of the board. fig. 1. & 6.
2. Stick the two mats together (coloured side down with the bottom or fillet mat on top)
using small amounts of double sided tape in the four corners only. fig. 6.
3. Using the spike, pierce through the two mats at the center point. fig. 2. This will insure
that the two mats line up after cutting the circles. Pencil mark the two mats on the back
so you know the exact way they go back together, then separate the two mats carefully
from each other and remove the double sided tape.
4. Cut the circle in the top mat first include a scrap board under the mat when cutting,
then reduce the size setting on the arm to cut the circle in the bottom or fillet mat. The
spike is placed in the pre pierced hole made earlier.
5. Using double sided tape, adhere the two back together making sure the two inner circle
cuts line up with one another. fig. 7.
If you are cutting a circle into dark mat board it may be advisable to place a piece
of tracing paper or brown paper on top of the mat first. Cut through this barrier paper
to prevent any scuffing of the dark coloured mat board.

How to cut an arch top mat
An arch top mat is really a rectangle mat with a circle top.
1. To layout the design for an Arch Top mat, first cut the mat board to the desired outside
dimensions. Then rule up for a standard rectangle mat in the normal way, marking out
the border width lines on the back of the mat. DO NOT draw in the top line of the
rectangle. Then, draw one further pencil line dividing the rectangle in half - extend this
line top to bottom of the mat. fig. 8.
2. The size of the circle to cut will be determined by the width of the window. The circle
should also be smaller than the width of the window. Approx. 1cm or 1/3” is ideal. This
will insert a small step where the sides of the rectangle meets the sides of the circle.
This is a more reliable method than trying to match up the two different cuts. fig. 9.
3. Once you have established the diameter of the circle you need to cut, next we have to
position the circle on the center line. The top of the circle arch should be the same
distance from the top of the mat as the other three border widths. Using a compass or
the pencil holder attached to the end of the Mat MasterTM Circle Cutter Arm, draw in a
circle in the open top of the pencil drawn rectangle on the back of the mat. Once you
are happy with the position mark the centre and piece the mat through to the front using
the spike. fig. 10.
4. Finally the position of the step has to be established. This can be at any point between
the middle of the circle and 1/4 from the top of the circle. Usually 1/3 down from the
circle top is ideal. Rule a line across the circle to mark the top of the window. fig. 11.
5. Turn the mat coloured side up ready to cut the circle. Add a scrap under board, postion
the circle cutter in the pre pierced hole and start to cut the circle. Start at approx
4 o’clock cutting around to 8 o’clock position, DO NOT cut a full circle. fig. 12.
6. Once the circle has been cut into the front of the mat, turn the mat over, and cut the
rectangle using the FrameCo Bevel cutter. Cut the top side which bisects the circle last.
Tip for Successful Circle Cutting
1. Blade depth should be the same as when cutting
straight line bevels. The ideal cutting depth is
when the blade just cuts through the matboard.
fig. 14. & 15.
2. Press the needle point spike firmly into the
boards. For small circles include a piece of MDFboard under the mats being cut. The pin will
anchor more firmly into the MDF.
3. A bump at the start / finish point is usually
caused by pushing the blade into the matboard
too quickly at the start. The ideal technique is
to lower the blade steadily into the board and at
the same time move the board into the cut.
4. As a safety precaution, store the pin so that it is
embedded into a piece of fome core.

Pencil Holder Attachment Block Attach the Pencil Holder to the Mat MasterTM Circle Cutter
Arm by aligning the pencil point to the indicator arrow.
This will ensure that the pencil is in the middle of the Mat
MasterTM Circle Cutter Arm.
Set the size by adjusting the sliding pivot handle and
indicator along the Mat MasterTM Circle Cutter Arm. The
markings on the scale represent the diameter of a full
circle - so if you require a radius then you must set the
indicator to half the final circle size.
The Pencil Holder is ideal for marking out all your mats.
A normal protractor can also be used.
GrooveMaster TM Attachment Block
Attach the GrooveMasterTM to the Mat MasterTM Circle
Cutter Arm by aligning the edge of the GrooveMasterTM
with the indicator arrow.
Secure the GrooveMasterTM onto the arm by means of the
attachment block, screw and washer - an allen key is
supplied.
Set the size of the V-Groove circle by adjusting the sliding
pivot handle and indicator along the Mat MasterTM Circle
Cutter Arm. The markings on the scale represent the
diameter of a circle.
The GrooveMasterTM is pulled toward you, ie in a clockwise
direction (Rotate the board in a anti-clockwise direction
at the same time as pulling the GrooveMasterTM). When
using the GrooveMasterTM keep an even pressure for an
even clean V-Groove.
