145 CLINTON STREET
REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS
MURAL PROJECT
OBJECTIVE
Site 5 DSA Owner LLC seeks proposals from artists for a mural on the façade of an exciting new
development on the Lower East Side in the Essex Crossing project. The mural will be one of the
largest of its kind in New York City. Please provide a proposal for the creation of a mural on the
façade in accordance with the requirements below. Respondents may propose to design and
paint the entire façade or a portion of the façade. Responses are due by December 15, 2017.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
145 Clinton Street is part of the Essex Crossing project bounded by Clinton, Suffolk, Broome
and Grand Streets. Essex Crossing is a collection of new residences, office space and retail in
addition to cultural space. 145 Clinton contains 211 apartments—consisting of 107 market rate
units and 104 affordable units. The project will also involve the creation of a new park along
Broome Street next to the site. Essex Crossing as a whole is comprised of nine sites on six acres
which have sat mostly vacant since 1967 and represents one of the most significant urban
renewal developments in the history of New York City.
PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS
Artists are encouraged to submit ideas for a mural on the western façade of 145 Clinton Street.
The façade is 220 feet long and either 35 or 79 feet high. See attached exhibit for
dimensions.
Façade finish: Stucco
Artists will be required to use paint compatible with the stucco finish, which will be
coordinated with the building’s owner.
The content of the mural should not serve as any sort of promotion or branding for any
business or organization.
The design should be suitable and acceptable for public viewing of all ages.
The mural should be distinctive through use of design, color and subject matter and
reflect the character of the Lower East Side.
Title of ownership for the artwork will pass to the owner of 145 Clinton Street, and the
artist will be required to sign a temporary non-exclusive license agreement for the
installation, display and removal of the mural. Pursuant to such license agreement, the
artist will waive all so-called “moral rights” to install, exhibit, preserve or maintain the
temporary mural under the Visual Artists Rights Act, 17 USC section 101, et seq., the
Artists' Authorship Rights Act, New York Arts and Cultural Affairs Law section 14.03,
or any other similar law, rule, regulation or order.
The temporary mural is expected to remain in place indefinitely at the sole discretion of
the owner of 145 Clinton Street and may be removed or covered by the owner at any
