Middle Atlas Mountains (Bou Angueur syncline), Morocco
Abstract: The Bou Angueur syncline is an asymmetrical structure related to the synsedimentary active, oblique strike-slip system of the Northern Middle Atlas Fault. Sedimentation at the southern limb of the syncline started in the interval between J urassic-Cretaceous transition and Valanginian. This is the earliest onset of sedimentation after the late Middle Jurassic diastrophism known in the Middle Atlas Mountains. Until the late Early Thanetian marly tidal flat deposits predominated. They were interrupted by Turonian limestones (Amghourzif Formation), which shortly introduced open marine platform environments; noteworthy are serpulid agglomerations of Filograna filosa. Sedimentation along the northern limb of the syncline started as late as Campanian(?)-Maastrichtian with phosphatic-calcareous-siliciclastic beach and forebeach deposits. They are overlain by predominantly marly near-shore and tidal flat deposits ranging up to the late early Thanetian. Paleogeographic relations within the Middle Atlas realm and factors controlling sedimentation (local synsedimentary tectonics, epeirogenetic updoming and eustacy) are discussed.
The first palynofloras and deduced facies from the J urassic/Cretaceous transition - V alanginian and the late Danian - early Thanetian of the Middle Atlas Mountains are described. The first is a typical mid-Mesozoic low diversity microflora dominated by coniferous pollen; the second is a low diversity phytoplankton assemblage dominated by Areoligera.
