When the Yahrzeit (anniversary of the death) of a loved one comes, what should I do?

I often read names of deceased individuals before the mourners Kaddish knowing that there is no family member marking the occasion within the communal framework of worship. And I know the family probably is in town. I think to myself: Where is the family? Don’t they want to honor their beloved, at least once a year in the synagogue by saying the mourners Kaddish in their honor?

I am sure, that on the anniversary of the death, family members are remembering their loved ones privately. But there is a difference doing so in community. For hundreds of years our people remembered their loved ones who died by doing the following:

1-Reciting the mourners Kaddish at Temple. A lot of memories will surround you as you say the Kaddish in the syna-gogue. When we feel the pain of their death, our community is supporting you.

2-We light at home a 24 hour memorial candle with no blessing attached on the evening of the anniversary of their death. Symbolically, the lit candle represents the soul of our departed.

3-We make a visit to the grave and we place a small rock on the tombstone marking that a loved one visited.

4-It is traditional that we offer charitable contributions. We do so because good deeds are attached to our memory.

I hope that we will see you at Temple the next time you will observe the Yahrzeit (anniversary) of a loved one. The pain of your loss will be ameliorated by remembering within a caring community.

shir chadash choirThe Shir Chadash Choir, Temple Emanu-El’s adult choir, is open to

all congregants who love to sing–all levels of experience are welcome. The choir adds to the beauty of

services, introducing new melodies and revitalizing classics. We sing at least once a month at Shabbat services –

usually the third Friday of the month – and at High Holy Day services.

Being a member of the Shir Chadash Choir is a great way to make music, be

part of a wonderful community, and learn more about the prayers in our

services – all at the same time!We practice on Thursday evenings.

Chag Sameiach! October is a month of Chagim (Holidays), beginning with Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and followed by Sukkot and Simchat Torah. We are blessed this year that Erev Suk-kot and Erev Simchat Torah are both on Sundays. What often happens with these two holidays is they fall during the week and after having to take time off of our regular weekly duties to attend Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, Sukkot and Simchat Torah play second fiddle to our daily lives. But this year we get to celebrate together on Sunday evenings!

This year’s Sukkot celebration will begin with our annual Souper Sup-per in the Sukkah. Congregants bring their favorite home-made soups to share and bake bread and desserts. Temple provides a salad to complement the meal. If you would like to participate by bringing soup, bread or des-serts, please contact the Temple office 248-967-4020. For others, the cost is $5 per person plus a can for chaveet. This wonderful event is followed by our Erev Sukkot Service. This year the Shir Chadash Adult Choir will join our Shiru Dor L’dor Youth Choir in spiritually up lifting our service with song. Following our service we all come together in our Sukkah to shake the Lulav and Etrog and partake in our traditional donut holes and cider!

Simchat Torah is always a special event here at Temple Emanu-El. It is the day that we welcome our youngest and newest religious school students into the tribe with their Consecration, which literally means “association with the sacred”. These students recite the Sh’ma for the first time with our Congregation as their way of demonstrating their devotion to Judaism. Together we celebrate the Simchat Torah Holiday -- once again consecrat-ing ourselves and devoting ourselves to the reading and studying of the Torah for another year. This Simchat Torah Service we welcome the Sam Harris Band along with our Shir Chadash Adult Choir and our Shiru Dor L’dor Youth Choir who will lead us in our sacred and uplifting text. We take out all of our Torahs and march and dance while the band plays and the choirs sing. Then we will open one Torah all the way so that it sur-rounds our sanctuary. Students who celebrated their bar or bat mitzvah since last Simchat Torah will read a small part of their portion beginning with the last verse of Torah and ending with the first verse of Torah, as we begin our Torah cycle once again. Our service will be followed by our traditional caramel apples and plain apples. I hope you will join us to celebrate these wonderful and festive holidays!

On another note, if you enjoy listening to all the great music the choirs produce over this holiday season, imagine how great it would be to be in the choir. I hope you will consider joining us in helping to bring joy and spirituality to our services

The Days of Awe are approaching. We are pleased to report that this year when you look up in awe during our High Holy Days worship, you will not be able to count the water-stained ceiling tiles. After replacing the roof last year, we have recently completed our Ann Jospey Sanctuary upgrade – new ceiling tiles, repaired plaster and new paint, washed windows, steam cleaned carpeting and replaced LED bulbs in most fixtures. A special and hearty todah rabah to Judy Greenwald, who heads our building and grounds committee, for her valuable and tireless assistance. Yasher Koach!

Also, we now have a handicap accessible front door. Todah rabah to those who urged us to make this happen and who financially contributed toward this improvement. An initial security upgrade at our front entrance is also in place – keeping the interior doors locked during much of the day. Our state of the art wireless video

and audio communications allow the staff to “buzz you in” when the doors are locked. Your Board led by President Dennis Kayes and Administrative Vice President Richard Gold made sure these improvements were on our agenda. We also completed a number of other maintenance and security improvements, and over the next year we will be making additional security upgrades. Most of the funds for the upcoming security upgrades will be from a homeland security grant we were recently awarded after two years of effort and applications.

At this season, in particular, we are reminded how much we value and appreciate your membership and participation in our congregational life. As your Executive Director, I would be remiss if I did not also remind all of us that without bread there is no Torah and without Torah there is no bread. Pirkei Avot. And so, your financial participation in Temple life is also mean-ingful, important and keeps the doors open (when they are not locked) for you and for the next generations – just as our ancestors did for us.

As I sit to write this article, I’m reflecting on the first day of Yachad Religious School. Over the past two months, I have been preparing for many new beginnings, and a lot of what I have been working towards finally came into play. We started the morning with a shira our traditional Jewish sing-a-long, breaking the ice and creating some atmosphere. Due to being new and not knowing what the children are familiar with, I chose a well known sentence from Tehillim (Psalms).

Hinei matov umanaim, shevet achim gam yachad - How good and how pleasing when brothers and sisters sit together in unity. And we sat together. And we sang.

I wanted to sing the song in as many different ways as we could before classes began. Everyone participated as we took traditional melodies, switched to popular tunes and even sang the song in two parts before coming together again and joining our voices as one.

There is something beautiful and symbolic about how we sang yesterday - we are and we continue to become what we were singing about. Yachad - together/unified. Our school is called Yachad and the more united we are, the stronger our children and our very future becomes.

Hinei matov is a very well-known song. As a song leader, as well as an educator, I often find myself searching for new tunes. It is easy to dismiss older melodies as dated. How-ever, just as we can fit the words to new tunes, we can bring our understanding of Torah to a place of relevance in our modern day lives.

We can take the words of our prayers and our psalms, the lessons of our history, and find meaning in them.

Music and song are powerful tools in our educational arsenal. It is hard to sing without joy. Thus music enables us to pray with meaning and connect to our Judaism both through prayer and traditional songs. Every Sunday, Religious School begins with a shira. You are all invited to come and join us as we learn new songs and enjoy the ones we already know, as we sing Yachad - together.

By now, most of you have heard me talk about the High Holiday Appeal, and many of you have responded, for which you have my sincerest thanks. For those of you who have not yet responded, here I am trying once again to encourage your support. Temple is very important to me-

-and I hope to you. Unfortunately, income from dues, tributes, the Religious School and the Early Childhood Community are not sufficient to provide the program-ming you want, need and deserve. So, like all other congregations, we ask our Members to help by making contributions in addition to their dues. It was so nice beginning the school by sharing a cup of cof-fee and donuts with our ECC families.

With the fall holidays upon us, our classes will be celebrat-ing Rosh Hashanah, the birthday of the world, and Yom Kippur, the time to say I am sorry. Our school holiday sing-a-long will give us a chance to welcome in the holidays together. We will dip apples in honey to ensure a sweet new year. Holiday activities include the story of Jonah and the Whale, creating holiday cards, cooking with apples, and listening to the sound of the shofar. The children will

celebrate Sukkot, the harvest festival with the waving of lulovs and etrogs. Simchat Torah will follow as we conclude the reading of the torah and start all over again. Marching through the sanctuary is a festive part of our celebra-tion.

Traditions begin early. Raising Jewish children begins at birth. Young children are able to experience Jewish traditions through their senses. They can taste Jewish foods, dance to Jewish music, smell things like latkes frying in a pan, and see the glow of Shabbat candles. The Temple Emanu-El ECC is privi-leged to share these values with all our children. Join us for Tot Shabbat and Young Family Services. Please check the Temple calendar for dates and times.

As the days become shorter and we find ourselves spending more time in-doors, take advantage and share books with your preschooler. Sharing books with your children can help them learn to speak better and develop listening skills. Find a quiet comfortable place for book sharing. Ask your child to tell you about the pictures and the story. Respond with enthusiasm to your child’s questions and comments. Have your child show you all the things in a picture that are alike in some way. You can say: “Can you find all the blue things?” Or, “Show me all the things that can fly.” Point out colors, shapes, numbers and letters in their books. Take your child to your local public library to bor-row books or to enjoy Story Time.

Fall is in the air and in our classrooms. The children have been fascinated by the changing colors of the leaves and admiring nature’s work. Stop for a mo-ment and marvel at the wonders of Mother Nature. It’s free!
