Workshop Spotlight:DELIVERING LEGAL SERVICES Lean process management focuses on reducing waste and increasing value-driven flexibility. Although the principles were developed in the manufacturing industry, MSU Law faculty members are applying lean thinking to the delivery of legal services – and teaching their students to do the same.

Fifty MSU Law students met for a free 14-hour seminar hosted by the Career Services Office. They spent the weekend exploring the big question for lean lawyering: how can we give the most value to our clients while using the least amount of resources? Students explored these issues by analyzing legal case studies, developing project communication plans, and engaging in process mapping.

“ Today’s law grads need more than substantive legal knowledge. Clients demand lawyers who understand their business and who leverage process improvement, project management, and technology to solve problems efficiently and effectively.”

— Daniel W. Linna Jr., Assistant Dean for Career Development

THE WASHINGTON, DC, Semester Program Dozens of MSU Law students experience life in the nation’s capital each year while engaging in on-the-job training at a federal agency. Participants work for U.S. government agencies, including the Department of the Interior, Equal Opportunity Employment Commission, Commission on Civil Rights, Department of Justice, Environmental Protection Agency, and the Securities and Exchange Commission.

“ Because of my involvement with the ReInvent Law Program, Professor Renee Knake helped me secure a paid internship at Riverview Law in the United Kingdom. I worked with technology teams to develop legal processing tools.” — Brian Pike, ‘15

Working AROUND THE WORLDFrom working in British legal tech to advocating for Costa Rican victims of human trafficking to navigating copyright issues for Italian winemakers, our students gain work experience all over the world.

MSU Law’s Lori E. Talsky Center for Human Rights of Women and Children also offers exciting international externship opportunities. The Talsky Center funds externships focused on international human rights and humanitarian law in Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, England, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.

“ MSU Law has a great reputation with federal agencies, thanks to the network of fellow alumni who were hired following their externships. This exposure gives MSU Law grads an edge in a town that can be hard to break into.”

— Rachel Dowell, ’11 U.S. Office of Government Ethics,

Washington, DC

“ Employers want to hire ‘practice ready’ law school graduates. Our extensive clinical programs provide students with the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned, hone the skills necessary to be effective lawyers, and obtain valuable mentoring from experienced faculty clinicians.”

— Joan Howarth Dean and Professor of Law, MSU Law

“ Working at the Chance at Childhood Clinic gave me insight into what it would be like to be an advocate for children and

parents. I completed custody evaluations, guardianship reviews, and advocated on behalf of a mother with a mental health challenge who was fighting for custody of her children. I took pride in helping clients to resolve intimate issues, giving them a sense of closure, and offering

hope for the future.” — Tori Edgar, ‘14

“ Because of my experience in the Plea and Sentencing Clinic, I can talk with employers not only about the substantive law I learned while working on actual cases, but also the criminal justice system in general. Every employer I talk to is impressed with my knowledge of sentencing guidelines.”

— Nathan Reitinger, ‘15

“ Nina Tarr, my clinic professor, has been extremely helpful when it comes to my future career. Her background in practice gave me access to valuable opportunities. Professor Tarr helped me to prep my resume, figure out where to work during the summer, and develop a career plan – she’s been an amazing mentor!”
