The Swiss University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Lucerne has developed a technique for embro-idering wooden veneer. They wanted to transfer a traditional textile technique to unusual materials. The Designers tested with a sample machine on non-textile ma-terials such as filter fabric, aluminum foil, acrylic film or cork. They were very surprised when the needle pierced a 2 mm thick veneer and saw great potential in it. This new technique connects two traditional trades and materials. New furniture and objects for home and office use have evolved. The three-dimensional

CORNER JOINTS The corners of sideboards or boxes can be made in various ways, depending on the aesthetic and structural requirements:

1. Box combing - is the simplest form of corner jointing for boards. Interlocking square tenons form the joint.

2. Dovetail - Here the tenons are tapered. This has the advantage that the connection can only be opened in one direction.

3. Half-blind dovetail - If the end grain should be hidden from one side, the half blind dovetail is used.

4. The full blind dovetail is the most complex corner joint, which is completely hidden in the finished piece.

5. Decorative dovetail - Where dovetailing is visible, it can be embellished as a decorative feature.

6. Tongue and groove - Tongued and grooved corner joints are suitable for solid wood and plywood, but not for chipboard. The connection is glued or glued and nailed. This joint is used for shelving, doors, drawers etc.

T-JOINTSCupboards, shelf units and chests of drawers are subdivided according to aesthetic and practical requirements. The T-joints can be made in a number of different ways:

1. Wedged tenons - The end-grain of the tenons is slotted. The mortices are tapered. After assembly the tenons are wedged from the outside.2. Tounge and groove - This connection is suitable for solid wood as well as for plywood and chipboard. 3. Doweled connections - The dowels ensure solid connections. When embedding the dowels, special care should be given to the right depth of the hole. If too short, strength is compromised.If too long, the hole risks breaking through to the outside, where it should normally be invisi-ble.

FRAME JOINTSTraditionally furniture and doors are produced from solid wood, a mate-rial subject to considerable swelling and shrinking. Attention is given to the fact that wood shrinks much less in length than in width.

1. Half lap is the simplest framing joint. It is easy to make but weak and should be secured with screws or nails.2. Slot and tenon – best suited for furniture and window frames. The upright parts of frames are generally slotted and the horizontal parts are given tenons.
