God has given us everything.
It is our responsibility to return to God the best first fruits of the bounty God has provided.
You may be asking yourself, How much should I be giving to the Church each week as my response for
all that God has given me?
This is a good question to ask. In Old Testament times and from antiquity the requirement was a tithe or
10% of your income.
Leviticus 27:30 A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees,
belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD.
This question of how much to give can only be answered by each individual or family. While the Catholic
Church does not technically require a Tithe (10%), it is necessary for Catholics to understand that it is their
responsibility to support the Church financially to the best of their ability, i.e., to return to God their first and
best of what God has provided for them.
This is a good time of year to investigate how well we are doing with our giving to the Church. Many of us
will be receiving W2 forms from our employers which will state our income from last year. Also, you
should be receiving a statement in the mail from St. Mary’s showing how much you gave to the Parish last
year. The chart below can be used to see how you are doing. Locate your income in the left column of the
chart. Then identify how much you gave to St. Mary’s last year, either from the statement you received or
from your own records. Take what you gave last year and divide it by 52 to get your weekly giving rate.
Then in your income level row find what percentage column your weekly giving rate most closely matches.
In any case, please take the time to prayerfully consider your giving to the Parish using this chart as a guide-
line. If your weekly giving rate is less than the 1% column or close to it, please give serious prayer and
thoughts to increasing your giving. If you are close to the 3% or 5%columns, prayerfully consider whether it
would be possible to approach a higher level.
Once again, it is up to each individual or family to answer the question of how much to give. Also, please
consider using e-Giving for planning and giving your weekly offering atomatically. A quick and easy way to
do this is to go on our parish website www.stmarywc.org and click on the Give link on the main page. With
e-Giving you can plan and schedule your weekly offering via debit or credit card.
