14 Travelling by air

Travelling by air is the fastest and perhaps the most comfortable means of transport. People tend to

think that it is the most dangerous way of travelling but it is far from being true because according

to statistical surveys it is actually one of the safest means of communication. The Hungarian

Airlines are called MALÉV. If you want to travel by air, you should purchase your ticket well in

advance because more and more people choose this form of travelling. Air fares are much more

expensive than rail or coach fares.

Before you board the plane, you have to register at the check-in-counter. In the meantime your

luggage is weighed and if it exceeds the weight limit, you have to pay an excess fare for it. After

that you receive your boarding card, which shows the flight number, the destination, the class and

the number of your seat. Depending on your financial situation you may travel economy class or

first class. After your passport has been checked at the passport control you can wait for your flight

in the transit lounge, where you will find a duty-free shop in all likelihood. It is worth buying things

there because goods are offered at really favourable prices.

At the airport you go through the red channel if you possess some goods liable to duty. If you don't

have anything to declare, you go through the green channel, where a random check may be

performed by the customs officers. Departures, arrivals, calls for flights, delays, cancellations or

other modifications, that is all the important pieces of information are announced over loudspeakers

and are shown on the flight information board, but you may ask for help at the flight information

bureau, too.
