Dear friends, associates, patrons, implementers, allwho have helped with ourOlympiad

Together with your help, we have realised our dream. We havecompleted the demanding task of enabling the knights of the whiteand black fields an Olympic meeting of intellect and wit in our verybeautiful Bled, which for two and a half weeks has been a real worldin miniature.Around 2600 of us have taken part in this story. More than 1400competitors, 250 FIDE delegates, 100 arbiters, more than 400journalists and reporters, and almost 500 silent, diligent organisa-tional and technical staff; those silent ants, whom almost nobodynotices as long as everything is going according to plan, and untilsomeone needs something outside the expectations of the plannedworking day.Who can count all the hours, kilometres, thousands of documents, plans, tenders, telephone discussions, contracts, agreements, thepersuasion, the coordination ...The Chess Olympiad has been substantially supported by the Ministryof Education, Science and Sport, and nearly one hundred sponsors, patrons and donors, with the main sponsor, the Mobitel company, attheir head. Nor can we overlook the efforts and commitment of thenumerous implementers, who have often realised wishes anddemands in record time. Many others have contributed to the successful realisation of theOlympiad and the good feeling of the participants, from our consularrepresentatives abroad to border officials, security services, touristand administrative staff and catering personnel in Bled and itsvicinity. The Olympiad has been a success. We have received many congratulations, many small attentions forall that we have done by our joint strength. For that reason, too, it has been a pleasure to cooperate in the largestsporting and cultural event to date in Slovenia. To all who have competed, assisted, cooperated, understood, advised, supported, tolerated, suffered, enjoyed – absolutely all who havecontributed their best to the successful preparation and implementa-tion of the 35th Chess Olympiad in Bled - my sincere thanks! Our sincere congratulations, too, to all recipients of Olympic medals. Our special compliments and gratitude go also to all competitors fortheir active and exemplary sporting participation, to the arbiters’committee for successful and undisturbed professional management, and to newspaper, television, radio, internet and other media forfollowing and concurrent objective reporting of events at the Olym-piad.We wish all distinguished participants and valued guests a happyreturn home and we look forward to seeing you at the 36th ChessOlympiad 2004.

Chess Olympiad is Exceptional Importance for BledThe successful organisation of the Chess Olympiad Bled 2002 is also an exceptional event for the co-organisers, the Municipality ofBled and its inhabitants. With the renovation of the Bled Sports Hall, the setting of the Chess Olympiad, the municipality has gaineda new sports, tourist, informational and cultural centre, which will be devoted to various activities and will enable the organisationof events on a higher level in the future. The Chess Olympiad also brought Bled cultural enrichment. In front of the Sports Hall a few days, ago there was the ceremonialunveiling of a new fountain, called Lokvanj, and on Friday 8 November 2002, the ceremonial unveiling in the park of Vila Zora ofa gift from academic sculptor Janez Boljka – a sculpture »Chess with bronze figures«, which is the first monument to chess in theworld, and which the author has donated to Bled. The Chess Olympiad and the many accompanying events, above all the interesting exhibitions, have been followed live in Bled bynumerous domestic and foreign visitors, including a large number of school children and young people. The millions of visits to thewebsite of the Chess Olympiad, Bled and Slovenia, which represents the best and most extensive promotion of our tourist pearl todate, have been of exceptional importance for Bled and the whole country. We have, therefore, in Bled followed with enthusiasm the Chess Olympiad, which has broken all records both in terms of the numberof countries, competitors and visitors taking part, and in the number of visits to the website. The municipality has cooperated to thevery best of its ability in the successful organisation and implementation of this resounding event, which we hope will remain, together with our town, a very beautiful memory for all competitors, accompanying persons and visitors. At the conclusion of theChess Olympiad, on behalf of the municipality I would like to thank all of you who have given Bled the opportunity, and to inviteyou to visit us again soon.

Boris Malej, Mayor of the Municipality of Bled

Ob zaklju~ku [ahovske olimpiade bi se v imenu ob~ine rad zahvalil vsem, ki ste Bledudali prilo‘nost, in vas povabil, da nas kmalu ponovno obi{~ete.

What do you think about Press Center?

    Zsuzsa VerociMTI, Origo, Sztarsport, NepszavaHungary

I think that Press Center here in Bledis simply the best. We have very goodworking place and very good informa-tion. People are very polite. Simplythis is the best press Center, that I’vebeen. This is my 15th Chess Olym-

piad. Bled is on the first place.

    Radio Romania InternationalRomania

Press Center is very nice, it’s the mostbeautiful. It’s the biggest and hasmany facilities, because here are 10telephone lines. In Istanbul forcomparations, there were only 2telephone lines in Press Center and

without computers. Computers were only for the spectatoruse. My only comment would be, that there is a big distancebetween playhall and Press Center.

Leontxo GarciaEl Pais, Spanish Radio – WorldwideServiceSpain

I think this Press Center is one of thebest I have ever seen in my life. I havebeen journalist for 20 years, espe-cially in chess events, this is reallyone of the best, not only because of

the infrastructure with so many computers and so manyservices, but also because of staff working in the PressCenter. They are very kind and very efficient at the sametime. I am really very satisfied.

Press Center is very good. Workplacesalso. Everything is very good.

The impression was very OK, espe-cially on the first day, but since wecome to the sedond half, it has beentoo many press acreditations, you see.Every second player has a pressacreditation now. So, if you come here

at 5 o’clock you can’t get a computer. The staff has beenvery good and if you got a technical problem, that is not aproblem. It’s very good, but it is so crowdy at the crowdedtimes.

Press Center is very good, rather isexcellent. Really, from heart.

This Press Center is very good, excellent. I mean, access to the internetobviously is one of the few place, where you can watch the games live. Iam very impressed. Probably the bestone actually. I can’t complain.

In this Press Center with a lot ofcomputers it is not difficult to find onefree. I am really impressed. Internet isreally fast.

    Mark LevittThe Cape AigusSouth Africa

I have been also to previous Olympi-ads. I think this Press Center is thebest one, so far. I saw there weretrouble with the web site in thebeginning. It is difficult to build sucha big web sites. So, it is normal. Staff

in the Press Center is very friendly. It is really useful, I mean, these plugs, because I have mycomputer, so I just plug in and use. In the past it was quitedifficult, on previous Olympiads to use the computers. It has been really empty at the beginning of the tournament, but now it’s quite full. It is diffult to get a seat, but if youhave your own computer it is easy. I think it has been quiteefficient, I like the big screen and watching Press confer-ences.
