INVITATION TO TORONTO

Julian M. Nedzelski, MD

The ACI Alliance Board of Directors at their April 2016 retreat.

Joseph C. Chen, MD

Dear Friends:We are delighted that you have joined us at this CI International Symposium in Toronto, the first international conference that we have organized since the inception of the American Cochlear Implant Alliance. We are proud to have partnered with the esteemed Scientific Program Committee at the University of Toronto, Sunnybrook to develop this outstanding set of scientific sessions, social events, and industry offerings designed to stimulate learning and exchange with your peers from around the world. Our Program Committee have been working diligently to bring you this comprehensive program with an exceptionally strong emphasis on the scientific side of hearing restoration.ACI Alliance is a unique organization. A non-profit membership entity of clinicians from across the continuum of care, educators, and consumer advocates, our mission is to increase awareness about cochlear implants among the general population including governmental agencies involved in health care, private insurance companies, primary care physicians and others involved in healthcare. It is only through such efforts that we will improve access to this extraordinary intervention, which at present is utilized by fewer than 10 percent of the population who could benefit. We encourage you—regardless of your nationality—to join us at our annual Member Meeting in the Grand Centre/West Ballroom on Thursday at 4:30-5:30 PM. We will share information on our work to address patient access and expand availability of cochlear implantation to all who may benefit. Though our insurance mechanisms and delivery systems are different around the world, the issues of awareness and access are common concerns everywhere. A special Remembrance for Dr. John Niparko will be held.Thank you for being part of this important gathering in dynamic Toronto!Sincerely,The Board of Directors and Staff of American Cochlear Implant Alliance

Dear Colleagues and Friends. A very warm welcome to Toronto! It is an honour and a privilege for us to host the 14th International Conference on Cochlear Implants and Other Implantable Technologies. This meeting is being hosted in Canada for the first time and clearly we are delighted to be your hosts. Technology is an ever-moving phenomenon and it is our intent to provide you our guests with the latest advances as they pertain to implantable prostheses as well as outcomes and strategies used to maximize benefit. Basic science research pertaining to hearing will be highlighted in a symposium whose participants are acknowledged to be world authorities. Our keynote speakers will speak to areas especially germane. It is our intent to honour four surgeons Drs. Thomas Balkany of the USA, William Gibson of Australia, Thomas Lenarz of Germany and Henyrk Skarzynski of Poland for their tremendous contributions and leadership. We are immensely grateful to the scientific committee, the large number of abstract reviewers and all others who will help to make this meeting both informative and memorable. Finally, Toronto is a city noted as having one of the most diverse populations in the world. It is said that there are no less than twenty -two languages spoken daily in the city. The meeting site is in the center of the city with easy access to restaurants, public transit, art galleries, and museums.Julian M. Nedzelski, MD, Joseph C. Chen, MD, Vincent Y. About the ACI AllianceThe American Cochlear Implant Alliance is a not-for-profit membership organization created with the purpose of eliminating barriers to cochlear implantation. The ACI Alliance membership spans scientists and clinicians from across the cochlear implant continuum of care including otolaryngologists, audiologists, speech pathologists, psychologists, and others in cochlear implant teams. Parents of children with cochlear implants, adult recipients, and other advocates for access to care are also active members are also active members. Our initiatives include research, advocacy and awareness.

Now and going forward, ACI Alliance organizes clinical research meetings that in the past were convened by cochlear implant clinics and hospitals. Some of these conferences are collaborative ventures, such as this international conference with the University of Toronto, while others will be convened by the Alliance alone.

Conference Learning Objectives• Identify the benefit of cochlear implantation (CI) and active bone conduction (BC)

devices for single-sided deafness (SSD);• Discuss the challenges/limitations of late sequential bilateral CI in children;• Evaluate the role and limitations of Auditory Brainstem Implantation (ABI) in children;• Explain how music perception and enjoyment can be achieved following CI;• Create and design an adult auditory rehabilitation program;• Assess the role of robotic surgery in the surgical practice of implantation;• Assess the current status of how molecular biology converges with hearing recovery

and CI technology;• Discuss the role of CI on the elderly and its impact on cognitive decline.

CONFERENCE DESCRIPTION

The course objective is to provide an overview of current thinking on rehabilitation of adults and children with cochlear implantation including special issues such as single-sided deafness, auditory brainstem implants, cognitive benefits for older adults, music appreciation, and therapy. Plenary speakers as well as submitted podium and poster presentations will also address the basic science of hearing. Challenges and outcomes related to hearing restoration following implantation of other auditory prostheses will also be shared.

The Cochlear Implant Program at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center at the University of TorontoThe Cochlear Implant Program at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center at the University of Toronto is a comprehensive surgical and clinical service for adults. This program initiated in the early 1980’s was the first in Canada to implant multichannel devices in early 1984. Currently the program offers the combined expertise of neurotologists, dedicated cochlear implant audiologists, adult aural rehabilitationist all

exclusively dedicated to optimizing hearing outcomes for adult patients. We provide ongoing clinical support for individuals who are graduates of the pediatric cochlear implant program at the Hospital For Sick Children in Toronto. In addition to the clinical service provided there are basic and applied science initiatives all staffed by highly regarded individuals. We have and continue to participate in clinical trials sponsored by all of the current manufacturers whose devices are available in North America.

The Sonja N Koerner Hearing Regenerative Laboratory established in 2010 houses our basic science initiative. We of course thank and acknowledge our many other donors for their continued support. Our support staff are all dedicated to the provision of exemplary care.As a fully affiliated hospital of the University of Toronto we help to ensure that medical students, residents in training , research and clinical Fellows are cognizant of the benefits as well as limitations of cochlear implants and other auditory prostheses.
