School speed zones loweredNewly erected speed zone signs around schools are encouraging drivers to take their foot off the pedal. The first two of a number of new variable speed zones Nelson City Council is planning are now operating on Nayland Rd and Main Rd Stoke. School speed zones encourage motorists to slow down to a maximum speed of 40 kilometres per hour at the beginning and end of the school day, making it safer for children near their school. Three more signs are planned for the region, in-cluding around schools on Vanguard St, Nile St and Muritai St.Road safety adviser for Nelson City Council, Margaret Parfitt says the signs have been well re-ceived by parents and teachers. “Reducing speed limits by just 10km/h on our local streets will bring significant road safety

benefits to all road users, particularly children on their way to and from school, cyclists and walkers. The difference between hitting a pedes-trian at 40km/h and 50km/h literally is a matter of life or death.”Nayland Primary School principal Janice Gul-bransen says the signs are great news for students in the area. “It makes it safer for students and we think the traffic speed over the few days it has been active has slowed, which is great.”Janice says there has been near misses in the past, although she hasn’t seen any. But she says she is happy the council has decided to take a proactive attitude to the area.“Let’s not wait for an accident until we do some-thing, let’s be proactive, so I commend the coun-cil for not waiting for a fatality before they did something.”

One of Nelson city’s main streets and the hub of its nightlife is set for a major upgrade, with Nel-son City Council approving initial concept plans for Bridge St.NCC has been working on plans for several months and has been in discussion with busi-ness owners on the street about the upgrades. And now that councilliors have approved the plans the council can start work on the detailed planning process. The upgraded area is on Bridge St between Trafalgar and Collingwood Sts and will cost $250,000.The council says the aim of the upgrade is to make that part of town a nicer place to spend time during the day and a safer place at night.Aspects of the project include new paving, out-door seating areas and wider footpaths in some areas, as well as improved and atmospheric lighting. Bridge St is home to the vast majority of the city’s nightclubs, and an area where people often gath-er to drink. Nelson police have been targeting problem drunks in the area to make it safer and the coun-cil is playing its part in cleaning up the area with this upgrade.Once drawn up, the detailed plans will then be used to tender the project for construction. The concept plans for the project can be viewed on the council website.

The victor was probably under little threat, but the chasing pack wasn’t too far behind.MP Nick Smith, driving his eco-friendly car, won the “race to work” against fellow politicians and businessman Jim Matthews on Monday morning, an event to help promote Ecofest this weekend.Nick took 15 and a half minutes to get from Sundial Square in Richmond to 1903 Square in Nelson with Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne in second place on his electric bike.Jim Matthews finished third on his road bike and Mike Ward riding his recumbent bike was in fourth.Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio was last after he took the Nbus and then a Segway to the square but he says he had the most “time effective” trip, able to read the morning paper, clear emails and drink a coffee on the way.Organiser Jo Reilly says the race was a way to encourage people to think about the different ways they can travel to work each morning and was part of the theme of this year’s Ecofest.“It was a fun event and shows just how many different ways there are to get to work and they are all pretty close together in times.”

Richard, on his electric bike, hit a top speed of 46 kilometres per hour, just eight kilometres per hour ahead of Jim. Richard’s average speed was 27km/h.Mike not only rode back from Richmond but rode out there before the challenge as well.Aldo was impressed with his ride to

work, saying there were dozens of other commuters on the bus with him and his ride up Trafalgar St on a Segway was good fun. “We should get these for council, they’re great,” he joked. The journey started at 7.30am and went through Stoke and Waimea Rd.

With candles glowing around the house on these wintery evenings and the smell of a delicious tagine slow cooking in the oven, I have decided a small amount of retail therapy in Living and Giving is what I need. With 20% - 40% off everything in store, I am able to stock up on my Ecoya diffusers. My favourite is the Vanilla Bean and also the Ecoya candles. These candles are remarkable and with a burn time of 50 hours. Made from soy wax, you can actually use the warm wax as a hand lotion, and the scent is divine. On the way to work I love my Bodum travel coffee mug, which is not only perfect for a morning fix of coffee but I do find that I have to be in quick otherwise one of my teenagers fills it with hot chocolate for their walk to school. So maybe I will add a couple of these to my shopping basket.Spend some time looking at the many cookbooks and gain inspiration for some baking, cooking, grilling and search the shelves for those little extras that look so delightful in your kitchen. The team are outstanding with their free gift wrapping, so a present for a friend is on my list.Don’t forget free car parking on Tuesdays. I look forward to seeing you at our Fashion Island.

Students at Nelson College for Girls may have to wear the same thing to school each day but they are looking forward to showing off their fash-ion sense this weekend as part of the Spring Fashion Fling fundraiser.Nelson College for Girls PTA is host-ing the fashion “fling” at the school this Saturday night but organisers say it will be much more than a fashion show with a night full of entertain-ment. “We have a great night planned and all the money raised goes back into the college to support the girl’s edu-cation. The evening is intended to provide a good night’s entertainment, so get a group of friends together so get your tickets soon to avoid disap-pointment,” says PTA chair Brenda Holdaway. The show will feature garments from Profile, Glassons, Hogey’s, Virtu-ous, Stirling Sports, Nelson Taylors Menswear, Labels and Cooper & Rouge while spot prizes are coming from other local businesses including Morrison Street Café, Woman Beauty Day Spa, Café Affair, Bowater Mo-tor Group, Bayleys and Mediaworks. There is even a chance of winning a car for the weekend to get you to Hamner to a night’s accommodation. Half time entertainment is by college students.Tickets are $35 (include a compli-mentary drink and platters on each table) available from NCG reception, or cash sales at Virtuous and Hogeys.

KEEP WARM THIS WINTER

Completing her postal route through central Nelson, there’s nothing to indicate that Lee-Ann Dixon is fast becoming a nation-ally acclaimed artist. The mother of five and part time postie still manages to fit in time to paint, and the “juggling act” is paying off. Lee-Ann recently returned from successfully displaying her works alongside more than 100 artists at the New Zealand Art Show at the beginning of the month. This is the fifth year the Nelson artist has been involved with the art show, and the second that she has been invited back, rather than having to submit her works for selection.“It was exciting knowing I was part of such a national event, all the art-ists are supportive and they’re all excited about it. There’s a wonder-ful art vibe going on,” she says. This year Lee-Ann displayed her works on a single artist wall. The majority of her works were painted silver trays, which Lee-Ann says she began working with because she was “broke” and couldn’t afford canvas. The frugal artist picked up

old trays from the dump, recycling centre, antique shops and was giv-en them by family and friends who knew she was collecting them. “It’s all about breathing new life into old treasures,” she says.Lee-Ann works as a casual postie, completing the walking town route, but she knows her days may be numbered. “Because the volume of mail is declining, our hours are going down, so it’s time to kick start the career in the arts. I still love being a postie, it’s a really good job, but I’m definitely excited about my art.”Lee-Ann says she is confident the change of direction is working in her favour, after 20 of her works sold at the art show. Her main subject matter is inspired by her late mother. “I paint teapots, teacups, New Zealand birds and butterflies, just things that evoke memory. The cup is about nurture, getting together with family. To me everything revolves around a cup-pa,” says Lee-Ann.The Nelson mother has also paint-ed portraits of her children, but she says she “can’t sell those”.

Mum is a swim champCommunity law has the backing of JPA prominent justice of the peace who worked as a community law worker for six years says if funding was cut to the service it would be tough for it to continue.Last month Nelson Weekly reported on the likely cut in funding to community law services throughout the country, including Nelson.Warwick Blair worked at the Nelson Commu-nity Law office until recently and likened to the job to that of a Sherpa. “We are there to lighten the load for those who cannot go on. We are there to show them the path they cannot see. We are there to inspire in them the confidence to try, to walk alongside them but to step back at the summit and allow them to take the success that is theirs. “Most of our clients would attest to our doing just that. If our funding were to be cut, it would significantly impair our ability to deliver that service,” he says.A quote in the original story was incorrectly at-tached to Warwick’s name, it in fact came from staff solicitor, Jim Ennion. But Warwick says he believes the office is valuable and it performs a much needed service in the community. The Nelson Bays Community Law Service pri-marily assists with employment disputes and family law, such as in cases involving children from split homes or domestic violence, as well as those facing financial hardship. In the financial year ending June 30 2012, NB-CLS served 4052 clients and delivered 5200 hours of service. “The value of our service is that it’s preventative, people can get help early on to avoid it escalat-ing,” says Peter Riley, managing solicitor for Nel-son Community Law.The decision on funding is due to be made later this year.

A Nelson mum was the first to swim 3330 lengths of River-side pool to win a $100 Fresh Choice voucher, but she wasn’t about to use it on a celebratory drink. “I’ve done too much to waste it on that,” says Cheryl Baxter, who last Thursday won the Go for Gold Swim Challenge at Riverside. More than 100 people from 10 to 70 years of age entered the competition and Cheryl says she wasn’t even planning on entering the full 100km grade. “I never thought I’d do it and I only joined the pool a couple of months ago but when I saw I was leading I thought I’d keep going and try to win it.”She swam 220 lengths on Thursday to take the win but the competition is ongoing with most of the prizes still up for grabs.

Seven years ago the Nelson Wom-en’s Centre threw out its remaining sewing machines after they kept breaking down, but today it will host its first sewing workshop since then, thanks to a local group.Patches of Tasman held a success-ful patchwork and quilting sympo-sium in April and used the funds it raised to donate sewing machines to Nelson Women’s Centre and the Victory Community Centre.Carrie Mozena, of the women’s centre, says the machines mean the centre can host sewing classes giving local women practical skills. The class, called ‘from op shop to top shop’ begins today and will see eight women take part. “We were rapt, when Patches of Tasman came to us with the idea I said ‘oh my god, yes’. It is such a practical skill and it’s fun and it’s creative.”Sponsorship from local and nation-

al businesses and organisations, donations of locally made goods and complementary exhibitions at local galleries all contributed to the success of the symposium. That led the Patches of Tasman organising committee, with the ongoing sup-

port from Bernina NZ, to acknowl-edge their appreciation by donating new sewing machines to the Nelson Women's Centre and to the Victory Community Centre to assist these groups in teaching and developing sewing skills.

She hopes to instill in her staff and those she trains, a mixture of good business sense, and a powerful understanding of the science of hair-dressing. She says it is critical to have a full un-derstanding of the chemical processes involved in the craft as well as developing the creative im-pulse, understanding shape and form to make the most of each individual client’s best attributes. Cherie has spent 20 years as a hairdressing ed-ucator at NMIT and has nurtured the develop-ment of hundreds of hairdressers over this time. Some areas of the bar are still closed off as The Vic continues to undergo upgrades. The main entry area and bar are open, as is the rear courtyard. Staff are currently breaking in the new kitchen, which is more efficient, clean and modern. Pa-trons can enjoy the cosy new fires as well as new seating and lighting, all designed to fit into the sophisticated, heritage look and feel of the brew bar.Soon to be open is the right hand end of the bar and the ad-jacent dining area, with live music on weekend nights to be starting up in the coming weeks. Other events will be added to the weekly and monthly calendar, including Quiz Nights and Open Mike Nights. Watch this space for more information. The upstairs function room will also become available early next month. This room underwent its own upgrades last year, with the strengthened floor and new carpet the only notable addi-tions from the cur-rent renovations. The room boasts a cocktail capacity of 80 and a seated conference or din-ner capacity of 50 to 60, making this space perfect for anything from corporate meetings to spe-cial occasions and birthdays. The intimate room has a cosy and welcoming atmosphere with plenty of natural light and

exclusivity, overlooking the cobbled Trafalgar Street stretch. The interactive projector whiteboard gives the room added versatility. Speak to the staff about hosting your next event in the function room.Fitzgerald Construction took the reins on the structural upgrades, proudly being part of the team to bring the first build-ing in Nelson up to 100 per cent on the earthquake code. With a minimum re-quirement of 67 per cent, Steve Fitzger-ald, company owner, says that the push for top standards is due to the building’s heritage status and the desire of all in-

volved to ensure the struc-ture’s longevity.Although the building may not look very different now that the work is complete, the twelve man construction team has been working for more than a month to bring every part of the building up to the highest standard as set by the national code. “There are no bricks left in the building, other than a few decorative ones around the new fire-places. Steel beams run from the ceiling to the floor, supported by two metres of concrete in the

ground. These are designed to absorb the movement of any tectonic activity and keep the structure of the building intact,” says Steve.

The Vic Brew Bar is the first building in Nelson to reach this standard on the code, but Steve expects many to follow. “It brings it to the highest level of

safety for the staff and patrons, and it will have signifi-cantly reduced the amount of insur-ance that they’ll be paying.”Come along to the Vic Brew Bar at the 1903 Square end of Trafalgar Street and see the exciting changes for your-self. The friendly family team are al-ways happy to give a warm welcome to their regulars as well as new cus-tomers. The Vic is a great place to en-

joy some great food, local beers and wines, and the best company you’ll find in Nelson. Cheers!

One of Nelson’s most historic buildings is now one of its most modern, at least in terms of earthquake stand-ards. After being closed to the public for three weeks, the Vic Brew Bar threw open its doors last Friday, and although it may not look very different at first glance, a lot has changed. The building, constructed in the 1880’s, has withstood the test of time and is now one of the most iconic bars to grace Central Nelson on the cobbled Trafalgar stretch. It was converted into a pub 20 years ago, a brew bar three, and two years ago it was purchased by the Williams, who

run the brew bar as a family. The structural strengthening has been in the works since the middle of last year, with the bar shutting its doors half-way through last month to begin the labour intensive upgrade. Columns were knocked out, chimneys were removed and a large steel frame was embedded into two metres of concrete at each corner to bring the old building up to 100 per cent on the national earthquake

code.“It’s been a real team effort,” says owner Ian Williams. “The Heritage Trust was

involved right from the beginning; the landlords, the engi-neers, the builders, ourselves, and the city council, everyone has really come together to make this happen.”

“Other nearby hospitality places have really shown their support too, it’s great that competing businesses are still there for each other. We’ve had great support from

our neighbours, from coffee from Fords to keep our workers going, to Smugglers taking our excess stock when we closed and returning new stock for our opening, to Cafe Olive giving some of our staff shifts while we’ve been out of business – they’ve all been brilliant.”The majority of

the Vic Brew Bar is now open once more, with a new beer added to their already premium selection. Mac’s Pale Ale debuted on Friday, with a strong response from Nelson’s

public. With all the favourites on tap, including three ciders – apple, pear and winter – as well as a great selection of wines, there’s something to hit a chord with everyone and every occasion.

TUESDAY 14 August 2012 NelsonYour Community Newspaper Weekly

Welcome to August – our last official month of winter! It does feel as if we have come out of the freezer just to fall into a lake… what a wet start to the spring. I am sure that that Nelsonians must all be suffering from Vitamin D deficiency after a string of gloomy, grey and overcast days – I know I am seri-ously starting to crave sun-shine so it was with great delight that I shook the moths from the 3/4 pants, donned a t-shirt and runners (also a jacket – I’m not that brave…) and Cruse and I took off to Tahuna beach this morning. It was really amazing – lots of sun, no wind and many others with their dog friends doing the same thing! It looks great with the snow still on the mountains, looking across the sea with clear blue sky above. It made me feel that summer is not just a myth!It is very easy to look at the garden through the rain on a dull day and not see much happening, so I tested this out last week and was very happy and pleased to see so much suddenly blooming. Amongst other things that stand outs are my reticulata ca-mellia – a gorgeous pink, and many other camellias ranging from red to white, the hellebores or “winter roses” in shades from deep red to white and lime green, the gold leucadendron and escallonia “Gold Brian” with fabulous gold foliage at this time of

year. Mixed in with these are of course the daffodils, narcissus, jonquils and iris-es, polyanthus, primulas and pansies that

are now starting to move and provide colour spots. It seems to be a good sea-son for the daphnes also with leucanthe and alba both flowering well in my fragrant garden. Also the plants of sarcococca rus-cifolia that went into this area 3 years ago are now providing a

beautiful fragrance. These love the dry shade area but do not seem to have suffered at all with the extra rain. Magnolia “Vulcan” is starting to flower also and looks rath-er magnificent – photos in next months column I hope!I have to confess to feeling just a bit smug….! The one fine day we had last week I got out and dealt to my vege patch – John-no had dug in compost so all my spring veges are now in and have benefited from the rain. The rest of the patch is just wait-ing for the September and October plant-ing to start. It is now time to clean out your seed trays and start thinking about summer seed sowing. If, like me, you have packets of old seed piling up, you can still use them pro-viding they have been kept dry, well past

the use by date on the packet. I have found that the strike rate is

pretty good even 5 years or so on – it is worth a try! There was great excitement in the potting shed last weekend as I uncovered a small jar of Beryl’s beans!! I spoke of her toma-toes, which I will be growing again this year, but thought I had come to the end of her delicious dwarf green beans. Beryl seemed to be able to grow these beans and have them on the table from October un-til May. She kept her family supplied with both fresh beans and seed and ate beans every day for many months. Considering

she was 97, blind and quite deaf she knew which ones to pick and when and which rows she would leave for seed – the green vegetable bug seemed to miraculously leave Beryl and her garden alone…! None of the family can remember which type of beans they were and I am so pleased to

have found 10 seeds, which I will plant in September.

• Make a list of the seeds you want to grow and start sourcing them now. Kings seeds have a beaut catalogue or go “on line”.• If you haven’t planted your strawber-ries yet it is OK – garden centres will have

plants already in flower so keep an eye out for these.• Plant brassica’s now – cabbage, cauli, bok choy, broccoli etc to give them a good start prior to the onset of the dreaded white but-terfly in late spring.• You can still plant broad beans (the gar-den centres have them in punnets to give you a head start), sow snow peas, cos let-tuce and radish, for a good start to sum-mer salad days.• Get out the snail bait – the cold weather does not seem to deter these guys and they will find your seedlings if you don’t get them first. • Check your roses for white scale – if found, rub it off with a stiff brush and then spray with Neem or Conqueror oil.• After so much rain it is a good idea to check around your trees and shrubs to see that the soil or bark mulch has not built up or been washed close to the base of the

plants. Collar rot sets in very quickly in these cold damp conditions so ensure that air gets to the base of all your treasures. • Keep weeding – they come out very easily after rain and also keep weeds away from the base of your trees to help prevent the onset of any col-lar rot as above.

Give yourself a lift and buy a boronia…..Pop one in a pot by the door for a lovely fragrant entrance – they are in the garden centres now. Boronia megastigma has the best perfume – I tend to treat these like an annual however, and they are cheap enough to love the fragrance without beat-ing yourself up over trying to keep them growing. Be patient this month – it is usually the wet-test and can be the coldest so don’t expect new plants to do much – liquid feeding can help, Seasol will strengthen seedlings and give them the best start into spring…

Keep smiling and happy gardening

The win also sees FC Nelson Sprig & Fern hold a 15 goal advantage over FC Nelson Fuji Xerox.Kerry Eggers got FC Nelson Fuji Xerox off to the best possible start on a damp Guppy Park when his free kick made its way into the back of the net. But it wasn't long before FC Nelson Sprig & Fern equalized, with another goal from a set-piece. Solomon Island international Hen-ry Fa'arado's corner found Ant Sonneman free at the far post following a prolonged spell on attack.Heyden Nunn then made it 2-1 just before half-time, when a wayward goal kick from a defend-er landed at his feet. The young forward kept calm under the pressure and cooly slotted the ball into the back of the net.FC Nelson Sprig & Fern, buoyed by its late goal, kicked into another gear in the second half with Henry and Davi Goncales Maciel causing hav-

oc in the front third. Both players assisted and scored goals in the second half to seal the vic-tory. Neil Connell had another tireless display in the middle of the park and was the pick of the FC Nelson Sprig & Fern players.Barring a surprise loss to bottom of the table Nelson College first XI, the Nelson Pine Indus-tries first division football title could be won next weekend. FC Nelson Sprig & Fern man-ager Rick Gower was under no illusion that this weekend's clash will be an important one for the club, especially as it comes just one week af-ter the schoolboys secured their first win of the season. "It was obviously a big result for us yes-terday but if we get a win next weekend against Nelson College then it's game over," says Rick. "We're quite confident that we've got one hand on it already. Nelson College have been unfor-tunate this year with the way results have gone. They're not a bad side so it will be interesting."This is the first season FC Nelson has played teams as a collective, since the amalgamation of Nelson United, Nelson Metro and Nelson City. Both FC Nelson sides still have a bye round to come, with FC Nelson Sprig & Fern's falling on the final round of the season. FC Nelson Fuji Xerox will play Queen St Pharmacy Richmond Athletic this Saturday.

Local Nelson Dance team ORIGIN has been named to represent NZ at the the Hip Hop Unite World Hip Hop Champs in the Netherlands in October 2012. ORIGIN are from the wider Nelson/Tasman are the only South Island team to be selected.

Over 16 countries, 90 teams and 1000 com-petitors will descend on Dordrecht in the Nether-lands from October 15-21 and ORIGIN from Nel-son, New Zealand want to be there! But we can't do this without your help. To fundraise the nearly $40,000 needed is a mas-sive ask, but something we believe is absolutely worth while.

To succeed at the highest level is something these young dancers have dreamed, worked hard and focused on for the past 4 years. Now to have this opportunity

is a dream come true and a responsibility we don’t take lightly.

The team are holding all sorts of fundraising events from raffles, quiz nights and car washes, to discos and dance workshops, but we are also asking Nelson if they will please support these talented dancers.

We have set up a page www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/originworldchamps where Nelsonians can show their support and make a donation. We know every little bit counts, and we really appreciate your support.

We also welcome any other donations - you can contact the team on [email protected]

Nelson Under 17, Under 15 and Un-der 13 teams had the perfect record at the Nelson Development Tourna-ment played at Saxton Stadium on Sunday. Each team played Marlbor-ough, Motueka and West Coast to record some impressive wins. The Under 17 team under the guid-ance of Faye Eden completely domi-nated their opposition. Nelson’s first game was against Marlborough Un-der 15A (with Marlborough unable to field a Under 17 Development team the Under 15 A were given en-try) and they dominated in all facets of play, winning 42-25.Goal attack, Abbey Frankin was im-pressive in her work load – not only did she shoot accurately and do the majority of the shooting she pulled in a couple of intercepts and some great tip ball. While her partner in the circle, Brianna Davis struggled to find her target early on, she soon found her rhythm to convert well. Emma Deighton and Hannah Dav-enhill were a formidable defensive unit, they fed off one another and got better and better as the tourna-ment progressed.Centre, Jessie Matthews does noth-ing flash but is a solid wee player who works tirelessly. Jessie’s work-load did not go un-noticed as she was named in the tournament team along with Hannah and Emma.Nelson defeated West Coast 39-20

and when given the opportunity to test the waters in unaccustomed po-sitions against Motueka, they rose to the challenge to record a command-ing 53 – 16 win.The Under 15 coach, Sarah Rankin was totally stoked with her charges – their improvement from selection has been immense, both as individ-uals and as a team. Nelson recorded convincing wins – 41-24 over Motueka, 40-24 over Marlborough and 42-19 over West Coast. The girls made a positive start and built on that performance in the fol-lowing games.Shooter, Ariana Te Kawa-Wiremu, wing attack Hana Morris and goal defence, Hannah Taylor all impressed and were se-lected in the tournament team.Anika Paton also impressed after getting a late call up to the team – after getting over the shock of being handed the C bib she displayed great vision through court and put in some superior feeds to her shooters. Under 13 coach, Nicky Kenny was absolutely delighted with her girls – they just got better at every out-ing. Nelson defeated Marlborough 30-15, they backed one another up through court, pressured the ball carrier and shooters Shaunagh Hailes-Paku and Demi Woolley converted with ease.

Centre, Lauren Hippolite was into everything, grabbing six clean in-tercepts and numerous deflections she linked beautifully while Emily Milson did a power of work at the centre pass.Nelson accounted for West Coast to the tune of 39 -16 and although they were not as fluent as they were in the earlier game they played some enterprising netball. Aimee Book had an outstanding game at goal attack, she shouldered

a hefty load through court and netted a number of long shots. Demi impressed to score 16 from18 in only 20 minutes on court. In their final game Nelson

defeated Motueka 41-12 leaving their best until last Nelson won the final quarter 15-1. They backed up on defence, had trust in one another and had the confidence to let the ball go.The defensive unit of Olivia Keenan, Chelsea Neame and Chelsea Mc-Manaway was astonishing with cen-tre Lauren added to the mix, Mo-tueka could not find a way into their shooters.Shaunagh, Lauren, Emily, Chelsea McManaway and Kiara Tinarau-Philips were all named in the tour-nament team.Annie Ewers-Kennedy was named as the umpire of the tournament.

Tayla Nesbitt competes during last weekend's South Island Open Championship, hosted by Table Tennis Nelson. Nelson competitors picked up a number of first placings in the age-group categories. Henry Neas and Oliver Bellamy won the under-18 boy's doubles, with Henry also winning the under-15 boy's singles. Tayla won the under-15 girl's singles while Shannon McCrae

edged Nadja Baden to win the un-der-13 girl's singles. Shannon linked up with under-13 boy's singles winner Fynn Sawyer to take out the under-13 mixed doubles. Fynn continued his golden run when he partnered runner-up Zac Pellowe in the under-13 boy's doubles. There were entrants from all over New Zealand and Australia competing at the tournament. • Four container vessels in two days at the start of the week kept the port and steve-dores very busy, a log ship and another general carrier kept them going, whilst sev-enteen fishing vessel movements around the port are suggestive of a successful week for the local companies.• How far away is spring, and what does it mean to the man in the boat, or woman? Winds are unpredictable, their strength varies, and people are often surprised at the voracity at which the wind can blow for short or long periods of time.• If you are caught out what are some of the best things you can do for survival.1- Do nothing – often a good option if you anchor is holding, your boat shelter is warm and dry ( don’t forget to let the peo-ple ashore waiting for you know what you are up to) 2- Weigh anchor and start slow steaming home. Remember in heavy weather, short steep waves, to keep your speed down. Pounding your vessel can cause injury to you and your crew and damage your boat.3- Keep the water out of your boat. Stabil-ity is crucial and your bilges must be dry. (There is no better pump than a frightened man with a bucket so don’t forget to involve your crew)4- Is there a closer alternative port, or shel-ter you can get to?5- If you need it – call for help. Better to be safe than to be sorry

If in doubt – don’t go out
