The Chinese Australian Dance Exchange Project is more than just a dance exchange. It is an exchange

of ideas and an intertwining of cultures, with an enormous amount of generosity and respect between everyone involved.

I am so proud to welcome you to our performance of 4Seasons, which is a collaboration between Expressions Dance Company (EDC) and City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) as part of our Chinese Australian Dance Exchange Project 2015-2020.

This initiative, part of EDC’s ongoing strategy to engage in cross cultural collaboration, sees EDC partner with three Chinese contemporary dance companies – Guangdong Modern Dance Company (GMDC) in 2016, Beijing/LDTX in 2019 and this year City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) who we warmly welcome to Australia for this beautiful season. This ground- breaking exchange has grown from my great respect for Willy Tsao, who is a pioneer for the development of modern dance in China.

Tonight’s program was developed in three parts. In October 2017 EDC travelled to Hong Kong for three weeks for the creation of my work, 4Seasons, a collaborative piece with 14 dancers from CCDC and six dancers from EDC. From April 23 this year, Dominic Wong, Assistant Artistic Director of CCDC, has been in Brisbane for four weeks creating Day After Day for the EDC dancers, whilst choreographer Kristina Chan has at the same time been in Hong Kong creating Summer for CCDC.

4Seasons premiered in Hong Kong on 1 June at the Ko Shan Theatre. A big thank you to Managing Director of CCDC Raymond Wong,

and to Artistic Director Willy Tsao for their generosity in presenting this program in the new wing of the theatre. It was a privilege to perform with their dancers and to their audiences.

The program is in three parts, and each choreographer has interpreted the seasons in very different ways. I think as an audience it is exciting to see the way that different choreographers can approach a theme, with each work being very different, yet tied together. Congratulations to Dominic and Kristina for their thought-provoking and moving works.

Lighting design for the triple bill is by Lawmanray, a very striking design, and costumes for the evening are by Cindy Ho Pui-shan, who has captured the essence of each work and the dancers beautifully.

Many thanks to rehearsal director for Day After Day Sally Wicks and to rehearsal director Elizabeth Vilmanis for looking after my work 4Seasons in Hong Kong. Having their support and outside eye makes the creation of work so much easier for everyone involved. They add a great deal to the process and bring out the best in the dancers’ performance.

I am proud to welcome the CCDC and EDC dancers to the stage. The CCDC dancers are exquisite, and it has been a very special collaboration. It has been a privilege to work with such fine artists.

Thank you also to the EDC dancers, Elise May, Richard Causer, Jake McLarnon, Alana Sargent and our newest ensemble member, Scott Ewen. The EDC ensemble is joined by trainee Isabella Hood, in her first season with EDC. I am always so proud of our dancers, they are the heart of EDC, and never cease to move me.

WELCOME TO

Page 3: 14 - 22 JUNE 2018 PLAYHOUSE, QPAC · Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi –The Four Seasons Rehearsal Director: Lizzie Vilmanis 4Seasons is inspired by the seasons of life. We

Welcome to QPAC for this performance of 4Seasons by Expressions Dance Company (EDC).

This performance is presented as part of EDC’s five-year Chinese Australian Dance Exchange Project, a major collaboration involving three high profile Chinese dance companies working with EDC to develop inspiring new contemporary dance works in Australia and China and provide vital opportunities for dancers and choreographers to deepen their practice on a cultural level.

The arts are a thriving part of Queensland’s cultural identity. QPAC is proud to partner with EDC and over a number of years our organisations have worked together to build audiences for contemporary dance in Queensland as well as the capacity of the artists who create these works. The Chinese Australian

Dance Exchange Project extends further the reach of EDC in building a bridge with Asian artists, companies and audiences and positioning Queensland as an integrated gateway between Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. Through QPAC’s partnership with EDC, we encourage this international collaboration and celebrate the stunning contemporary dance works created as a result.

4Seasons brings together 20 dancers from EDC and Hong Kong’s City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) in a triple bill of new works by Natalie Weir (EDC), Dominic Wong (CCDC) and Kristina Chan. Like so many artistic endeavours, the result of this collaboration is greater than the sum of any one part – a moving and exceptional showcase of new contemporary dance works.

I hope you enjoy this performance and look forward to welcoming you to QPAC again soon.

I am excited that after more than two years of planning, City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) and

Expressions Dance Company (EDC) have together produced a very special program, 4Seasons.

This is the result of close collaborations between dancemakers and dancers from Hong Kong and Brisbane, exhibiting not only the high standards across the two cities, but also the common concern for climate change.

EDC has worked with the different companies I have led, including First Ritual with BeijingDance/LDTX in 2011, and 51°Cosmos with Guangdong Modern Dance Company in 2016. This time with CCDC, it is a tighter, more involved kind of collaboration, as demonstrated by the three sections in 4Seasons: first the Hong Kong company working with Kristina Chan – a Hong

Kong-born Australian choreographer; then the Australian company working with Hong Kong choreographer Dominic Wong; finally dancers from both companies working with Australian choreographer Natalie Weir.

After the premiere in Hong Kong in early June, the company of 20 dancers from EDC and CCDC are now performing in Brisbane before travelling to the Darwin Entertainment Centre and to the Beijing Festival at the end of July.

Contemporary dance – an art medium making use of body and motion – transcends barriers between languages and cultures. Dance artists from any part of the world use their bodies to search for individuality and creativity as they reflect on the world around them. Dance is one of the most direct and reflective of all art forms. I hope 4Seasons is a small step in enhancing friendship and increasing understanding between the people of China and Australia.

SUMMER 〈夏〉Choreographer: KRISTINA CHAN with the CCDC Dancers

Dancers: CCDC dancersMusic: Summer by James Brown Rehearsal Director: Bruce Wong 黃振邦

Summer is an imagined dystopian future engulfed by extreme temperatures and oppressive atmospheres. It is concerned with global warming and its related effects. As we enter into uncertain times for our survival, apathy has no place, yet it is ever present in the greater community.

Choreographically and visually I was interested in exploring unpredictable weather patterns and changes, melting and wilting bodies, breath and air, and the individual amongst the masses.

Humanity depends on the natural environment for survival more than it needs us. As we realise the grave impact we’ve had on our environment, can we band together to make better change in these urgent times?

KRISTINA CHAN

Life is filled with alternate departures and reunions, like the changing seasons.

Dominic Wong, Assistant Artistic Director of CCDC, looks into cycles of seasons, exploring human relationships in the metropolis.

Thank you CCDC for giving me a chance to work with EDC to create Day After Day. Thank you EDC dancers for choreographing with me on this piece and Natalie for letting me have Sally as my rehearsal director. I’d like to thank our costume designer Cindy, lighting designer Lawmanray and everyone involved in this production. This work is the result of our work together – and exactly what this work is about, human relationships as inspired by seasonal changes. May this dance bring us closer to each other and resonate in your heart.

4SEASONS 〈四季〉 Choreographer: NATALIE WEIRwith the EDC and CCDC Dancers

Dancers: The EDC and CCDC Dancers Music: The Four Seasons Antonio Vivaldi Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi –The Four SeasonsRehearsal Director: Lizzie Vilmanis

4Seasons is inspired by the seasons of life. We see four couples at different stages in their lives together, the eternal youth of Spring, the storm clouds of Summer, the beauty and tenderness of Autumn and the ageing of winter, looking back at one’s youth.

It could be one couple, or different couples during their life span, and all of the dancers are connected together by humanity.

I would like to thank the dancers of CCDC and EDC for their collaboration on this work; they work together so beautifully, and it is so satisfying to see two companies from two different places connected together by the universal language of dance.

NATALIE WEIR
