CANOEING THROUGH THE FOREST

Take a leisurely Canoe through Berowra National Park. With spectacular parks to the

east, the Berowra Valley Regional Park to the west, and the mighty Hawkesbury

River to the north, Berowra Waters is Sydney at its natural bushland and aquatic

best. Watch out for all the wildlife you can encounter close up and personal. This will

involve bush toileting using a trowel so a good idea to practise this before you come

to Jamboree. This trip may still involve some paddling against the tide so you need to

be reasonably fit.

Level: Medium – Some canoeing experience required

Equipment needed: 5 -6 Dry bags to store gear (one needs to be large enough for

sleeping bag) + larger bag (eg plastic storage bag) to carry dry bags to and from

jamboree site OR one larger aqua bag to store all gear (must be totally waterproof

when submerged) plus a small waterproof bag for day requirements; headlamp or

torch; aqua shoes; whistle; rash vest or long sleeved shirt; board shorts or similar,

waterproof case for phone or camera if bringing it; small trowel or scoop for toileting

Expeditions 14-17

CANYONING EXPEDITION For the adventurous, two days of canyoning in the Blue Mountains enjoying

abseiling, floating on lilos and the fun of exploring canyons that are off the beaten

track. Fitness and ability to swim are a must, abseiling experience is an advantage.

Must be able to cope with heights when abseiling into canyons.

Level: Hard – Canyoning is a physically challenging activity requiring a good level of

physical fitness, it is equivalent to a full day on a difficult bushwalk, with the addition

of water and abseils

Equipment needed: Swimming gear, aqua shoes, own wet suit if you have one (will

be supplied if you don’t), headlamp or torch, lightweight bag and day bag

Skills needed: Ability to swim with a lifejacket. Rockcraft experience an advantage

but not required. Fit and able to undertake canyoning, abseiling and similar activities

– must be able to cope with heights of at least 15m when abseiling into canyons.

CAVING EXPEDITION For the adventurous, two days of caving in Bungonia National Park enjoying caving,

abseiling, and the beauty of this National Park in the Southern Highlands. Girls will need a

set of coveralls for this adventure as they are sure to get dusty/muddy

Equipment needed: Lightweight backpack or bag suitable to pack overnight

camping gear for adventure, powerful headlamp plus a spare torch and spare

batteries for both, coveralls, sturdy shoes that can get dirty, spare plastic bottle for in

cave toileting in an emergency

Skills required: Fitness to cave and willingness to venture underground for a

number of hours at a time.

CITY EXPEDITION Enjoy all the iconic Sydney City adventures and sights overnighting at a Youth Hostel

in the centre of the city. Includes a Sydney/Darling Harbour 4 pass visiting Madam

Tussauds, Sydney Aquarium, Sydney Wildlife and Sydney Tower Eye as well as a

chance to explore galleries and museums. This adventure includes entrance to all

visited attractions, meals and accommodation but pocket money for souvenirs etc

should be included in spending money.

Expeditions 14-17

DINOS TO DIGITAL Come on an adventure and be a Scientist in Sydney. Challenge yourself with great

hands on, cutting edge technology workshops at Microsoft Digital Media. Be

inspired at the Australian Museum by taking part in some fascinating workshops. The

museum is a world renowned scientific research institution. You can be a scientist on

this expedition. You don’t need to be good at maths or science for this adventure but

wish to be inspired and discover more about the world around you.

Level: Easy

adventure (big enough for clothes, toiletries and sleeping bag plus snacks for the

EXPLORING THE EASTERN SUBURBS

Begin the adventure bicycling around the splendid Centennial park with a picnic

lunch. Overnight at a local Youth Hostel and on the 2nd day visit Bondi Beach which

is one of the most visited tourist sites in Australia so you can have a surfing lesson,

take a walk from Bondi to Tamarama and an “Explore Bondi” tour. Look out for the

famous ‘Bondi Rescue’ life guards!

Level: Easy- Medium

adventure (big enough for clothes, toiletries and sleeping bag plus snacks for the

Skills required: Ability to cycle, swim and walk whilst carrying your gear

FLYING EXPEDITION The Jamboree Flying adventure will give you a chance to challenge yourself and try something really different! Take the controls of a light aircraft and fly around Sydney with an instructor teaching you how to move the aircraft through the sky. Next sit back and relax on a helicopter flight where you can take photos as you hover above Sydney Olympic Park. During the adventure there will also be numerous hands on aviation activities and overnight will be indoors to allow you to keep your energy up!

Expeditions 14-17

GREAT NORTH WALK An opportunity to sample a section of this iconic walk for more serious hikers. This hike includes some challenging ascents and several short steep descents including steel peg ladders in two places. As experienced hikers you will be used to bush toileting with a trowel. Includes beautiful views, passing through Galston Gorge and includes riverside hiking, camping at a beautiful little bush campsite with the canoe adventure and one of the kayak adventures. Enjoy campfire stories with a local Darug Elder. Visit the Great North Walk Website

Level: Hard – some challenging ascents and short descent on pinions/spikes in rock

Equipment needed: Hiking backpack suitable to carry overnight camping gear,

hiking boots or sturdy shoes worn in, headlamp or torch, small trowel or scoop for

toileting, camel pack if you prefer that to drink bottles

Skills required: Ability to carry own pack for two days. More challenging hike for

those who enjoy bush hiking.

HORSE RIDING AT MEGALONG VALLEY

Travel to Blackheath in the wonderful Blue Mountains and be taken down into the

picturesque Megalong Valley to the farm. Help care for your horse, take a ride to

striking Cox’s River lookout (4 hours return) and have a local ride around the farm

the next day, leaving time to explore the historic pioneer village. Camp overnight at

the farm.

Level: Medium

Equipment needed: Boots or shoes suitable for riding, headlamp or torch;

lightweight bag or backpack to carry overnight camping gear

Skills required: Ability and willingness to undertake horse riding for a longer period.

MARINE AND QUARANTINE Catch a ferry to Manly, explore breathtaking North Head and enjoy a ghost tour of

the Quarantine Station. Stay overnight in the historic Doctors and Nurses Station.

The next day join in a service activity to protect the environment of Sydney’s Fairy

Penguin population. Finish off with a picnic lunch on Manly Beach and Beach

Volleyball or a swim before catching the ferry back to camp.

Expeditions 14-17

KAYAK EXPEDITION 1 Kayak in exquisite Berowra Waters to campground on beachside at the foot of Mount

Shuttle on Berowra Creek, near the mouth to the Hawkesbury River, returning the

next day. With spectacular parks to the east, the Berowra Valley Regional Park to

the west, and the mighty Hawkesbury River to the north, Berowra Waters is Sydney

at its natural bushland and aquatic best. Watch out for all the wildlife you can

encounter close up and personal. Campsite includes drop toilets and a lovely little

sandy beach. However this is a challenging paddle as we may be paddling against

the tide for some of the trip.

Level: Hard – Good to have Trefoil 3

Equipment needed: 5 -6 Dry bags to store gear (one needs to be large enough for

sleeping bag); larger bag (eg plastic storage bag) to carry dry bags to and from

jamboree site, headlamp or torch, aqua shoes, whistle, rash vest or long sleeved

shirt, board shorts or similar, waterproof case for phone or camera if bringing it, small

trowel or scoop for toileting along the way

Skills required: More experienced: Trefoil 3 Canoe / Kayaking and kayaking

experience. Ability to swim 50 metres with a lifejacket

KAYAK EXPEDITION 2 For the less experienced or those wanting gentler exercise, paddle to a bush

campsite along Berowra Creek near Crosslands exploring Crosslands and Scotts

Creek as you go. With spectacular parks to the east, the Berowra Valley Regional

Park to the west, and the mighty Hawkesbury River to the north, Berowra Waters is

Sydney at its natural bushland and aquatic best. Watch out for all the wildlife you can

encounter close up and personal. This will involve bush toileting using a trowel so a

good idea to practise this before you come to Jamboree. This trip may still involve

some paddling against the tide so you need to be reasonably fit.

Level: Medium – Some kayaking experience would be helpful

Equipment needed: 5 -6 Dry bags to store gear (one needs to be large enough for

Expeditions 14-17

MOUNTAIN EXPEDITION Explore the iconic Blue Mountains World Heritage area, visit Katoomba, walk in the

lush Jamison Valley and enjoying the rides of Scenic World. Overnight at Random,

our spectacular Girl Guides mountain home with its breathtaking views of the

Megalong Valley. Enjoy an evening visit from a local Darug Elder and musician. Next

day enjoy the gorgeous walks around Random before heading back to Sydney.

Level: Easy

Equipment needed: Sturdy shoes for walking; lightweight backpack suitable to pack

overnight gear for adventure (big enough for clothes, toiletries and sleeping bag plus

snacks for the day)

Skills required: Ability to undertake bushwalking for several kilometres with a pack.

SPRING FLOWER EXPEDITION Hike from Waterfall to Heathcote through fabulous photogenic scenery. Camp overnight at the beautiful Ulooloo Falls and enjoy local stories and culture from an aboriginal educator. Stop for lunch at Karloo Pools on the way out. You will enjoy springtime flowers, magnificent views and amazing heathlands. There is a short challenging climb after lunch on the second day up from Karloo Pools. This activity will involve bush toileting using a trowel so a good idea to practise this before you come to Jamboree.

Level: Medium- includes one hard climb out of Karloo Pools

STEM EXPERIENCE Are you a young woman who is good at Mathematics and Science? Do you have an interest in not only “making things” but also “making things happen” by solving challenges and developing new ways to shape a better world? VISPERA EXPERIENCE Get your imagination happening by taking part in a creative, hands on experience in Visual Arts or Musical theatre Production at our Glengarry Training Centre set amongst the wonderful bushland bordering the Kuringai National Park. Watch out for the kookaburras as they check out your singing, dancing, instrumental, even brush strokes or gluing! This would be ideal for those whose sense of adventure takes them into the Arts World rather than outdoors

WHITE WATER EXPEDITION Explore the white water experience at Penrith, home of the Olympic water sports.

The first day would be spent at Cables Wake Park giving water boarding a go plus

having fun in the Aqua park. Stay overnight in lodge style accommodation at Cables

then head over to the Penrith White Water Stadium for a white water rafting

experience and beach volleyball.

Level: Easy-Medium

ZOO SNOOZE Are you passionate about animals and the environment? Do you want to know more

about the how Taronga Zooworks behind the scenes and have a taste of the Youth

at the Zoo program? Do you fancy sleeping under the stars and waking up to the

sounds of the animals? This is the adventure for you.

Level: Easy

Equipment needed: Groundsheet large enough to wrap yourself in as you will be

sleeping under the stars; lightweight backpack suitable to pack overnight gear for

insufficient participant numbers for the activity to be viable, weather or unforeseen circumstances.

Expedition allocations will be made using a random ballot system and girls will be advised as soon as possible in April 2018. Any

girls who choose, and are allocated, an activity which incurs further cost will have the fee added to their invoice at that time.
