Araiza/ARIZONA DAILY STAR FROM THE President’s MESSY DESK To our old and new friends: Wow. In the last few months, Friends of Sabino Canyon has raised more than $725,00.00 in the “Save our Sabino” cam- paign. With the help of Jim Click and Mel Zuckerman, both past Friends of Sabino Canyon board members, we have raised more in these months than we have in ten years. I have to thank them for putting forth their resources, time, and money. The time I spent with the trail repair crews was exhausting just to observe, but work continues. The media coverage has been nothing short of stellar. We introduced Pizza Hut as our June S.O.S sponsor match- ing dollar for dollar up to $40,000.00. I have to thank my board for the un- ending hours of work. This is a hard working volunteer group, I’m proud to be associated with such a crew. But, in the end, it is you that I have to thank profoundly. We asked and you delivered. This is nothing new, as I have witnessed in my many years with Friends. With businesses like The Jim Click Automotive Team, Canyon Ranch Health Resort, Clear Channel Radio, Eclectic Café, eegee’s,Williams and Associates backing, this campaign became a reality. There will be more to do, and ask of you in the future, and based on your track record…you’ll be there. I thank you. Let’s get together in the canyon at Music In The Canyon on Nov. 30th! Notes from the Ranger

Hello Friends.

We had a great “Save Our Sabino” SOS closing event with the “ribbon cutting”ceremony on September 30th.

What an amazing event SOS has been. I can’t begin to thank you enough for the $725,000 + that has been collected. You currently have $200,000 under contract with the Youth Conservation Corps to continue working on trails throughout Sabino Canyon and accessing Mt. Lemmon. This process will allow us to bring trails back to standard that would normally have taken us 3 to 5 years to get to. I want all to know how much I appreciate the hard work that has gone into the SOS campaign.

On another note, I will be retiring from the Forest Service on January 3, 2008. I have had an amazing career with the Forest Service which started in 1971, and it is time to move on. Sherry Tune, who many of you may already know, has been hired as an assistant District Ranger and will be on the district immediately.

After January 3rd, Stan Helin, the Forest Recreation and Engineering Staff Officer, will be on the district for several months as the Acting District Ranger until the position is filled on a permanent basis. I have really enjoyed the past four years at Santa Catalina. I value the friendships I have formed with many of you. I will not be leaving Tucson, so I look forward to continuing to work with you in a volunteer capacity.

Thank you all for your continued support to Sabino Canyon. I hope to see you on the trails soon.

HAPPY TRAILS. . .RECORD BREAKING SUPPORT for ‘SAVE OUR SABINO’ CAMPAIGN

(Photo above) Jim Click, Jr. of The Jim Click Automotive Team; Diane Maxwell; and Mel Zuckerman, founder of Canyon Ranch Health Resort celebrate National Public Lands Day on September 30, 2007 in the Sabino Canyon Recreation Area of Coronado National Forest.

Over $725,000 in community support resulted from the SAVE OUR SABINO campaign. A beautiful plaque was dedicated on National Public Lands Day by the Forest Service to honor the 10 major donors of the SOS campaign, and is now displayed at the Ramada next to the tram booth. Handmade tiles recognize the many contributors who gave $500 or more.

(Right) Santa Catalina District Ranger Larry Raley thanks the Friends of Sabino Canyon.

(Left) Bob Porter, one of the founding members of the Friends of Sabino Canyon Board of Directors since 1993, has remained an active board member since its inception, and looks forward to the 15th anniversary next year.
