Healthy Soil Demonstration – What is Healthy Soil?Soil Health is achieved when mans’ management mimics nature. See the differences between soils managed conventionally and healthy soils managed with a diverse rotation, very little disturbance, soil cover, and living roots growing throughout the year. Infiltration, runoff, and soil aggregation stability are demonstrated.Location: Joseph D. Harrington Building
Web Soil Survey – Custom Soil Maps & ReportsSee a live demonstration of the online soil information system Web Soil Survey. Learn how to load soils information for your area of interest, gather information relating to soil properties and soil interpretations, and generate custom reports. Location: Joseph D. Harrington Building
Cover Crop Display – Discover the Cover!See over 20 cereal, grass and forb cover crop species and mixtures on display at the USDA-NRCS main exhibit. For more on cover crops, also visit the Sustainable Agriculture exhibit. Location: Joseph D. Harrington Building
Cover Crop Demonstration – Discover the Cover!View cover crops and cover crop mixtures planted after small grain harvest. These cover crops were planted July 17 and 18 with an Esch no-till drill with 5.5” row spacing directly into stubble from the previous rye crop. The rye grain and straw were removed prior to cover crop planting. Cover crops include forage radish, annual ryegrass, sunnhemp, sorghum sudangrass, triticale, oats, phacelia, hairy vetch, sorghum, and crimson clover in different combinations.Location: Joseph D. Harrington Building, next to the Corn Maze
Cover Crop Tours – Discover the Cover! Take a PSU cover crop research tour and learn about incorporating cover crops in corn and soybean production. Research plots demonstrate the challenges and benefits of insect, weed, and fertility management when incorporating cover crop monocultures and diverse mixtures into conventional and reduced tillage organic field crop rotations. Location: Bus leaves the corn crib daily at 12:30 pm.
Stamp State Conservation Commission – Nutrient Management & Soil Health Obtain Nutrient Management and Soil Health information to improve water quality and meet the Commonwealth’s Act-38, Chapter 91, and CAFO regulatory requirements.Location: PSU Nutrient Management Exhibit (Joseph D. Harrington Building)
USDA-ARS Rainfall Simulator – Raining the Benefits of Good Soil Health!See the effects soil health has on crop yields, soil erosion, and root growth. Four soil runoff boxes with varying soil health provide an opportunity to see the soil plant interface and learn about the benefits of organic matter and plant residue upon a growing corn crop. Misters on the rainfall simulator will cool participants and delight children on a hot August day as they learn about the positive effects of soil health.Location: Conservation Education Area (Outside of Joseph D. Harrington Building)
Pennsylvania No-Till Alliance Learn about the many benefits of no-till farming from experienced producers. For more information on the Pennsylvania No-Till Alliance, please visit www.panotill.org.Location: Conservation Education Area (Outside of Joseph D. Harrington Building)
Pasture Soil Health Station – Feed Your Underground Herd! This station will demonstrate pasture management and high density rotational grazing methods to benefit soil health on grasslands and pastures. The Pasture Soil Health Station is part of a Pasture Management Best Management Practice (BMP) Tour. Join us for a self-guided tour anytime or participate in a bus tour scheduled for 10:30, 12:30 and 2:30 each day. Tours meet at the Corn Crib.Location: Grazing Demo Area (above the Main Horse Arena)
PAOneStop – www.paonestop.orgSee a live demonstration of user-friendly online tools that help farmers meet regulatory requirements for Conservation and Nutrient Management Planning. Location: AgMap/PAOneStop on West 10th Street
