POZDRAVNO PISMOPREDSEDNIKA VLADEREPUBLIKE SLOVENIJEDR. JANEZA DRNOV[KA

Ker se predsednik vlade zaradi dr`avni{kih opravilni mogel udele`iti odprtja 73. kongresa FIDE, jeposlal naslednje pismo.

Dear participants,

The world Chess Olympiad on Bled, which is slowlyarriving to its conclusion, was an important and rareopportunity for Slovenia and its chess and generalpublic. It was an opportunity for Slovenia to once moreconfirm its devotion to the game of kings, which hasover the centuries inspired millions of people around theworld with the increasingly demanding thought combi-nations. It has inspired the masses that play chess forentertainment and hobby as well as those few individu-als who have sought the meaning and fulfilment of theirlives in this wonderful game.I am convinced that the sporting battles of the top chessplayers of the world are a unique demonstration of thebonds that strengthen friendship and co-operation allacross the world. At the same time they are the confir-mation of a common language, through which we can -and also must – communicate amongst each other andencourage each other in the mutual competitiveness, which is in the contemporary world becoming a basicprecondition for development and progress. With its infinite possibilities chess also symbolises thenever ending, never achieved and realised boarders ofhuman creativity, therefore it remains a challenge alsofor all the coming generations, who will further improveand develop it with new discoveries and understanding. This year’s Chess Olympiad on Bled represents merely asmall piece of this grand mosaic. I therefore hope thatthese surroundings have inspired all participants to findthe necessary composure and dedication to the gamewhich will with its riddles and mysteries continue toexcite those who decide to follow its footsteps for years tocome if not for eternity. At the end allow me to welcome you all and wish you allthe success during your final challenges.

Gospod Jean Hebert, kapetan kanadskega mo{tva, je biloptimisti~no razpolo‘en glede predstave svojegamo{tva.

Mr. Jean Hebert, the captain of the Canadian nationalteam, was in an upbeat mood about his team’s perform-ance. We have finished amongst the top 20 teams andwe hope that our final surge in the remaining roundswill take us towards the top of the rankings. In 1978 wewere 10th and that was a great performance which weare trying to repeat. Chess is becoming increasinglypopular in Canada and since the introduction of chessin schools we have more juniors taking up the game.Montreal is the most active chess centre and we havealso staged an international closed grandmaster tour-nament for the past three years, which has helped ourCanadian players and their relatively new development.

The other centres are in Toronto and Vancouver, whichare also gaining on popularity. The Canadian team issponsored by Belzberg technologies and this is alsoperhaps a new trend i.e. that sponsors are coming forthto promote the game. In chess the Internet seems to bethe latest trend. A lot of our players play chess on theInternet and they quickly improve their chess skills.

Chess & maths is an organization, which promotes chessamong students. Recently they have also organized aninternational master norm tournament in order toprovide the juniors with valuable experience and thepossibility to obtain title norms.

CHESS IN POLANDInterview with Bartlomiej Macieja

When did you learn to play chess? What was the mo-ment that made you start playing? My mother taught me how to play chess when I was 5 anda half years old and when I was 7 years old I joinedPolonia Warsaw, the best chess club in Poland. I alwaysliked mathematics and puzzles and one day I saw somepeople playing a strange game in a park. I was engrossedby that game, which I later on discovered was chess. When we returned home I told my mother I want to playchess and so my parents decided to buy me a chess set. Atthe time they were convinced that I will play with it for aweek and then forget all about it.

How did you progress as a junior in the under 14age group? After 1 year of training with my coaches in the chess club Iwas the best of the group and I started playing at the Na-tional Chess Championship and gradually made it to thetop. In the World Youth Championship held at Warsaw in1991 I took the bronze after an excellent performance in-spired by my home turf.

When did you attain your titles and the ELO Rating? Can you chart your progress?I became an IM in January 1996 by obtaining the 4 normsrequired in 1995 and I made it into the 2400 points class inELO Rating after I attained a stable rating of 2460 for 2years. After that I started working seriously on my chessand I worked with the famous GM Vitali Tseshkovsky, theformer champion of Soviet Union. I trained extensivelyunder him and in 1998 I exploded onto the internationalarena and attained the grandmaster title. I obtained thefirst norm in 1995 and the second in 1996. I achieved myfinal norm in 1998 and transformed my game to the 2550points level. In 2001 I made a dramatic achievement bybecoming the first player born in Poland to attain a ratingof 2600 ELO points.

Who is your favourite chess hero and what are yourambitions?I greatly admire Karpov who is also my Idol. My first bookwas Karpov’s selected games and I have studied his gamesinto great depth. My current style of play is also influencedby his technique. I have a passion for romantic chess he-roes and I have compiled a book on Lionel Kieseritzky. Myambition is to attain the 2700 ELO rating and then moveahead to reach the pinnacle of chess. I am currently col-laborating with GM Judit polgar and this collaboration hasproven very useful in enhancing my knowledge. Duringthis period I have also became the European Champion.

What is your working schedule in chess?Currently I am still a Student of physics at the University ofWarsaw. Hence I am yet to become a full time profes-sional. Perhaps I will turn my attention to chess full timeafter I attain my graduation.

Kdaj ste se nau~ili igrati {ah? Kateri trenutek vas jespodbudil k temu?

Kdaj ste si pridobili svoje nazive in ELO rating?

^utim strast do romanti~nih {ahovskihherojev in sem napisal knjigo o Lionelu Kieseritzkyu. Mojeambicije so dose~i ELO rating 2700 in nato priti v sam vrh{aha. Trenutno sodelujem z velemojstrico Judit Polgar in taizku{nja je veliko priprimogla k mojemu znanju; z njenopomo~jo sem postal Evropski prvak.
