TREATED WASTE Municipal solid waste. Green waste. PROCESS DESCRIPTION Municipal solid waste are collected together to a separate covered area of the plant where they are put into feeding bunkers. After that the waste are transported to a shredder and to manual sorting device for the removal of the damaging materials (pos. 1-4). Green waste are taken into the composting area: here they are shredded outside by a mobile machine after a preliminary stocking. Urban waste are divided by mechanical screening (pos. 5) as follow: Undersize fraction are taken to the fermentation plant, while the oversize materials are destined to be transformed into briquettes with a specific plant including PROMECO EXTRUDER system (pos. 6-12). Undersize organic materials coming from screening are pre-treated with a wet selection (pos. 13-19 and 21) within a mixing with water for a preliminary dissolving of organics due to a minimum content of moisture required by the methanisation. The organic sludge, heated up to 38°C, necessary temperature for a mesophilic trasformation, is pumped into BIMA digester (pos. 20) where it remains for a minimum period of 18 days. BIMA digester gets no mechanical devices, such as mixers, pumps or blowers. Mixing system is given by a flushing caused by a difference of pressure of the produced biogas. From a chemical point of view, biogas is constituted by 60-70% of methane (CH4) and ca. 30-40% of carbon dioxide (CO2). Produced biogas is taken into a gasholder where it’s stocked before burning into gas motors for the production of electricity and heat (pos. 22-27). Digested sludge is dewatered, mixed with green shredded waste, and then treated by PROMECO EXTRUDER (pos. 31-37). Then the intensive phase (called Active compost time) of composting process is developed in a covered area (pos. 38-40). The curing phase and a next refining phase enable the production of a good quality compost. Exhaust airs coming from the different area of the plant, besides the airs sucked from compost windrows, are treated with biofilter and chamber filter (pos. 28-30). From the control panel it’s possible to manage the automation and the regular developing of the anaerobic and composting process. PRODUCTS AND THEIR APPLICATION Compost. Produced compost is characterised by high quality and it represents an indispensable material for agriculture and soil remediation. Depending by the final destination, it can be mixed with compounds to improve the characteristic of the product. Biogas. Produce biogas is transformed into electricity and heat, both used for process requirements and/or to be sold outside. RDF briquettes. Compacted product with calorific value of 4.500 kcal/kg and with specific weight of ca. 1.500 kg/mc.
