What is it?

We write about it. We talk about it. We agonize over it. We can’t serve without it. It is membership.

New members are the key to club health and growth, and they increase your ability to serve your

community. Of course, there is never a bad time to invite your friends and neighbors to join your club.

However, sometimes we need to focus on an objective; to concentrate on a goal. District Governor

Tom Zickefoose has set a goal for us to achieve; a net increase of 20 members this Lions year.

Traditionally, the month of October has been dedicated to inviting members. To encourage clubs to

start and end the year strong, Lions Clubs International is now also recognizing member invitation in the

month of April. Lions who sponsor a new member reported in the month of October or in the month

of April will receive a silver Membership Growth Award pin. Gold pins are available for Lions who

sponsor a new member reported in October and a new member reported in April. Beginning in the

2013-14 Lions year, clubs that add new members in both October and April will receive the Membership

Growth Award Banner Patch and a fiscal year patch. Thereafter, repeat award recipients receive a fiscal

year path to affix below the banner patch.

Think about inviting younger community members, such as students and former Leos, to become Lions.

Young members represent the future of Lions. They bring new energy, inspire fresh ideas for service,

and provide increased support for local and international projects.

Remember, a net increase in members can mean a net increase in community service.

Invite Students and Former Leos

Last month's Global Service Action Campaign was "Engaging Our Youth." This month, think about invit-

ing younger community members, such as students and former Leos, to become Lions. Young members

represent the future of Lions. They bring new energy, inspire fresh ideas for service, and provide in-

creased support for local and international projects. Read more about the Student Member Program and

the Leo to Lion Program and the benefits they receive when joining Lions.

Apply Now to Attend a Leadership Development Institute

LCI provides many leadership development opportunities for current and future Lions leaders. Take

advantage of the training offered at the following Institutes: Emerging Lions Leadership for developing

club-level leaders; Advanced Lions Leadership for preparing district-level leaders; and Faculty Develop-

ment Institute for experienced Lions faculty. All institute schedules are now posted, and many applica-

tions are available online. Visit the Development Programs page in the Leadership Resource Center to-

day! Contact the Institutes and Seminars department for more information.

Yours in Lionism

DG Tom Zickefoose

From Your District Governor - DG Tom Zickefoose

I would like to start out by saying that All Clubs need to focus on keeping their members happy and interested in being Lions so we can control

our controllable losses so please work a little harder on this. Thanks.

I have not really been too busy yet!! I went to the Youngstown Club to talk on the Eye Care Foundation then headed to Columbus for our first

Council of Governors meeting where we, as Governors, decoded to collect a wrapped shoe box full of school supplies and a book for kids K12

by Nov.1st. The supplies will be handed out for Christmas. I'm asking ALL Clubs to participate in this. ALL boxes will stay in OUR District this

year in the Youngstown and East Liverpool areas.

We had our first cabinet meeting and I thought it went very well. I'd like to thank the Zone Chairs for having most of their zone meetings set

up. Thank You again for that ZC's. We also had our District scrapper's game and there were over 30 Lions in attendance. ZC Elmer Takash

won the ZC prize for the most in attendance in his zone so congrats out to ZC Elmer.

We also had our first GLT/GMT meeting at Ben's Restaurant in Berlin Center. We got a lot done and great things will happen this year from our

team. To finish up the month I went to the Zone 6 meeting in Alliance. Next month visitations will pick up and I will be visiting more clubs and

attending more zone meetings.

From Your First Vice District Governor - FVDG Barb Sorkin

Yours in Lionism

FVDG Barbara Sorkin

Hello Fellow Lions.

The Month of August has been full for the First Vice District Governor. A great deal of my time has been given to my Club in preparation for

our food booth at the Portage County-Randolph Fair. Two days were spent preparing the Barbecue Beef for sandwiches that we have served

for many years. I will be working in our Food Booth this year.

Done a lot of planning on my visitations and other Lions meetings that I'm involved in as FVDG. I will be visiting all clubs in Region1this year.

Region 1 consists of the clubs in Mahoning, Trumbull and Portage Co. Please have the person in your club that does the planning of the meetings

call me to set up a date for my visit especially those in Mahoning and Trumbull as those will be a longer drive for me. I want to have these visits

done before the snow shows up. If I don't hear from anyone, I will be calling the President of the club, followed by the secretary to get my visita-

tion arranged.

From Your Second Vice District Governor - SVDG Bob Allgood

First, ThankYou Lions of District 13D for allowing me to be your SVDG. I know I have much to learn, and with your help I know I will. In July I

went to Super weekend for some training. In Aug I went to my first Council of Governors meeting, and more training. I have six club visitations

and two charter nights and will be going to a zone meeting.

In Sept, Lion Liz and I will be going to Overland Park ,Kansas for the USA/Canada forum. I will be looking forward to meeting the clubs of Region

2 and their great members. Remember What DG Tom says “ JUST ASK ONE.”

Yours in Lionism ,

SVDG Bob Allgood

A Message from

International President

PDG Jeff and Lion Carol made their annual camping trip to Sharbot Lake

Ontario in July. While there, they enjoyed a fund raising breakfast put on

by the Sharbot Lake Lions Club. Pictured with our Canadian Lions who

were serving the breakfast are Jeff and Carol.

Dear District Governor Tom,

Congratulations on earning your Dream Achiever Awards Gold Pin and Silver Star in Period 1! Although the period has been extended through

September, you have already qualified for recognition and will be presented with your one-of-a-kind pin and star at your upcoming area forum.

If you are unable to attend, the award will be given to your GMT area leader for distribution.

In addition to earning your Gold Pin and star, you will receive four Silver Pins and four Silver Stars to present to your leadership team. You're

also being recognized on the Dream Achievers website so Lions around the world will know you've achieved.

The Dream Achiever Awards are designed to motivate you to achieve high membership goals and provide special recognition when you do. You

have earned your recognition by excelling in the program's four key membership goals in the months of July and August:

· Expand your district by chartering new clubs

· Invite new members to join

· Retain existing members

· Grow your overall district membership

Thank you for your hard work and dedication. Keep up the good work and go for three more stars in the remaining periods to fill in your pin!

Kind regards,

Barry J. Palmer

Your International President

"If we dream boldly and pursue our dreams, we will achieve more than we ever believed possible. This is our time to lead. This is your time to achieve."

This n That Faith, the black Lab raised by SVDG Bob and Lion Liz Allgood, has passed her training at Pilot Dogs. Faith has been matched up with her person

and together, they passed their training. Faith is now an official seeing eye dog. She was the 1st puppy that the Allgood’s trained and certainly

isn’t the last. Thank you both for all you do.

CST/PDG Tom Kirkbride is trying to put together a portfolio with all the PDGs from 13-D. If anyone has pictures of a PDG from 1963/64 to

present to send them to CST Tom. They can sent electronically or a copy by mail. Thank You.

Lions and Special Olympics: Partners in Unity

LCIF announced a five-year expansion of the partnership with Special Olympics during the 96th Lions Clubs International Convention in Germany.

Through Opening Eyes, Lions already help provide vision screenings and eyeglasses to Special Olympic athletes. Now, Lions and LCIF will help

create leadership opportunities for Special Olympics athletes, increase the health work of Special Olympics, conduct outreach to families for addi-

tional support and reach more young people through inclusive sports and advocacy programs.

“Together We Can”

The 2013-14 Council of Governors is collecting school supplies and books as one of their projects this year.

District Governor Tom is asking each Club to fill a shoe box with school supplies and a book for children K thru

12. The boxes should be wrapped in Christmas paper because they will be distributed after the Christmas school

break throughout our District. Please indicate what grade range the box is for. DG Tom would like to have the

boxes and books by Oct. 28th. The Zone Chairs will be collecting the boxes so please contact your Zone Chair

when your box or boxes are ready. If your Club is not able to collect items, a monetary donation would be appre-

ciated. Please contact your Zone Chair if you have any questions.
