Arms can be constructed of heavy castings for a substantial look like the BAPT arm shown below or lighter more minimalistic pieces like the 80 or the 86 models also shown below. Other arms are fabricated from tubular stock of round, oval, square or rectangular materials that can be bent, cut and welded into many custom and semi-custom designs.

Roadway arms are much larger in scale and therefore need to be highly engineered to hold weight, resist vibration and wind conditions present on roadways and at higher mounting heights. Some roadway arms are very simple tube stock and others are dressed up with decorative castings that are reproductions of arms designed and built decades ago. In all cases Sternberg arms meet AASHTO structural guidelines for roadway applications and meet ANSI requirements for vibration.
