Presidents ReportBy Bob Nash
Beverly Simons, wife of Gardner-Westcott owner Ralph Simons passed away in Florida on July 9 . Her
funeral was held, amongst family and friends in Farmington. With the bad there is always some good and
for Bev there is relief from the effects of Parkinsons Disease. Some of the older members were able to
visit Bev at the funeral home, mass and luncheon. We were also able to reminisce about the good old
days with Ralph at lunch before he headed back to Florida
Amongst the women of Motor State Bev was well known as the master shopper. Difficult to keep up with
in many ways!
She will be missed, and to Ralph and family, we share your sorrow.
Were all very aware of how fast summer is fading. Only a few big events left. Namely: Goodguys Indy,
The Ohio Mile, and IDIDIT. Im writing this after returning (in the rain) from Kalamazoo. It was truly a great
weekend in and around the MSSR Compound. Its nice to see everyone enjoying the friendship of this
club. Have you noticed how many former members stop by to say hello. I think they can see were having
a good time. Maybe now is the time for some of those folks to think about joining again.
Just prior to KZoo a large number of members took in the Hines Park Cruise. In spite of the traffic
problems entering the park, it was a good time had by all of our members and guests.
I hope Karen slips a note to Rich for the newsletter thanking the members of her team as we keep our
eating reputation alive (complete list will be in the next edition). Contributions of food and cash made
things a lot easier and we whole heartedly thank those that contributed. Sharing a meal and someconversation with your friends its just the best!!!
See you out and about this fall.

Long Time Members, Jack and Shirley Miller
The Millers go back to the early days of
MSSR just like the Fackenders. They both
were there when someone said what if we
put a bigger motor in this old car. Yep, the
early days of hot rodding would not have
happened without old cars, and an urge togo fast and be cool.
Jack and Shirleys many years with MSSR
started with the purchase of their First Street
Rod, a 1923 T-Bucket in January of 1976. A
T-Bucket in January would have been a site
to see coming home to the Millers house,
bet the neighbors said one of these days
that couple will grow up and become
normal.
A good thing for us is that in the summer of
76, a group of disgruntled Michigan Street
Rod Association members, many of themlocal Ford Employees broke away from that
organization and formed a Steering
Committee to discuss starting a new street
rod club and Jack was a member of that
original group. Through that committee, they
became acquainted with fellow car guys and
gals and formed Motor State Street Rods in
August and September of 1976. From that
moment on began many, many years of fun
and adventures that have continued to this
very day in the Miller Familys lives.
Jack and Shirley children at the time were
Ann Marie 4 years old, Ray 9 years old and
Jim at 10 years old. Today they have
continued to make Mom and Dad proud with
Ann Marie now 41, Ray now 47 and Jim is
now 48. All three of the Miller kids have
many wonderful memories of their MSSR
adventures.
Over the 37 years in MSSR, the Millers have
driven our T-Bucket to St. Paul, MN twice
both in 77 and 79 and to Columbus, OH
once in 78. When was the last time you
seen a T-Bucket doing long hauls, not much
anymore.
The Millers and their T-Bucket in St. Paul
in 1979
The Millers acquired the 29 Model A in 82
from John Schumont following the Nats
North of that year.
The Millers and their Model A 1984
Three years later, Larry Block, a former
club officer and state safety inspector now
deceased and Jack totally rebuilt the car
including chopping the top. The Millers
drove that car all over the country from the
West Coast in Washington State to the
East coast in Plymouth, MA and
Burlington, VT. They also ventured as far
south as Tampa, FL and many points in
between. They owned that car for nearly
20 years and the car went through several
redos over the years. There is very few of
us to this day that have done so many
cross-country trips.
The Model A in 2001 the 4th
Generation
Other cars that they have owned were a
65 Mustang Convertible and a 57
Thunderbird.
On the West Coast trip some of the
members remember that Jack bought a
new pair of tennis shoes at K-Mart before
the trip. The shoes were 2 different sizes
so when Jack walked the one shoe was so
big it kept flapping on his feet. They had
to push him to go get a new pair so they
did not hear the noise when he walked.
Motor State Street Rods and the Millers
have been involved in Nats North from the
beginning of that event, first as a host
club when it was at the Michigan State
Fairgrounds from 1980 until 1986, then a
a game host when it moved to Kalamazo
in 1987 until the present day. For those
of you that need a calculator and cantfind one, that is over 33 years of service
to the NSRA.
And the travel did not stop there, over all
the years, when you count up street rod
trips and non-street rod trips, the Millers
have visited all the states by two, North
Dakota and Oklahoma, plus they have
traveled to Canada, Central America and
Europe on Cruise Ships. PS: I have bee
to Oklahoma; you have not missed much
except a tornado of two.
And to add to the impressive list thatthese two have done, please consider the
fact that Jack was the Membership
Secretary from 76-78 and again in 82 plu
a Director in 81 and Club President from
79 through 80 and 83 through 84 and
again in 87 through 88. Not to be
outdone, Shirley was a Director from
1997 to 2000. A total of 15 years of
service for this great couple if you have
not found your calculator yet.
The list gets even longer when you
consider that Jack was also an NSRA
Safety Inspector for 22 years with Shirley
pitching in on paperwork while they met
many friends along the way.
The Millers helped run and host many ca
shows and swap meets over the years.
Jack also planned the MSSR Anniversary
parties at Greenfield Village, the Boat
Club and the Dearborn Inn.
In Mrs. Millers honor, we have officially
renamed out Friday Kalamazoo Friday
Hot Dog Day as Shirleys Lunch Special,
since she would rather eat a hot dog than
a steak, something not totally right about
you girl but we love you just the same.
Jack and Shirley intend to remain in
Motor State Street Rods until they are
pushing Daisies; we hope that is a long,
long time from now. This club would not
be what it is today without your efforts in
the early days and your continued fun an
friendship that we have today.
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You for
being there for Motor State.

After what most will agree was an ugly
June with rain averages enough to fill lake
Michigan a few times and what seemed
like an attempt by the people upstairs to
keep us hot rodders from our cruise night
rounds most of the month, on the very lastday of June, our prayers were heard and
Walla sunshine and a nice mid 70 day
greeted us as we arrived at the lake side
home of Phil and Anne Reilly. We were
summons there by MSSR leadership to
enjoy our very first 2013 summer meeting
served with a great view, wonderful
company, a classic car parade, boat rides
and food that makes the body happy.
The Great View
Great People
Boat Rides
Anne fired up her new toy, one that will not
survive around Phil very long and sounded
her new siren/megaphone combination to
announce that we had 9 minutes to get
ready for the parade that she had arranged
around the lake. Most know Anne was a
school teacher so hence the 9 minute
warning, not 10. Well 9 minutes later, we
were all assembled and now heading out
with the siren of her megaphone blowing in
Phils ear as they lead us around the lake
where a lot of the people normally found inboats had moved ashore to film and
capture the neat old cars that had invaded
this normally quiet location. 21 cars in all
had lined up to go on the parade and Phil
furnished a couple of his cars so that
everyone got a chance to participate.
Line up in single file, we are in a Parade
Dennis, you are out of line, you must go
to the Principals Office
Now we got it right
The parade was a success; all had their
American Flags waving as we passed all
the onlookers. Next up there was a nice
boat ride for anyone interested supplied by
not only Phil but one of his neighbors and
that was enjoyed by all.
And now, the grand prize was awarded to
all in attendance, Food, starting with
turkey, stuffing, salads of multiple variety,
beans, potato salad, oh oh, plate not big
enough, we are in overload mode, this
cannot happen, there is a bunch of desert
still waiting our attention. Well, just eat up
open the belt a notch and make somemore room. Best darnn caf in the
Pinckney area I think.
Ok, come and get it

Russ, you doing another burn out
Or was it you Ben
Thats it folks, the annual downriver cruise,
the noisiest and loudest car event in
history.
Round and Round He Goes Where He
Stops, only Russ Knows
We heard this cruise produced music and
shenanigans as we sat on the southbound
side of Fort at the end of the cruise in front
of the only short stretch of three lane new
concrete available and very near a
boulevard turnaround. Many cars, not
wanting to get tied up in the single lane
traffic ahead, made the turnaround in frontof us and those drivers were delighted to
see an open short stretch of tantalizing
new broad concrete. So, pound the pedal,
roar and squeal to their hearts delight
cause the cops were nowhere to be found.
But, here is an interesting quote from the
Detroit Free Press: Area police enforced a
strict code of conduct for cruisers: no
speeding, drag racing or burning rubber.
Oh? Methinks someone forgot to tell the
cops about the southern end of the cruise.
But, hey, we died in the wool car nuts will
not be held back because of a little noise.
Under the only popup available to us
MSSRers, conversation took place anyway
but considerable effort was needed to
stimulatethe vocal cords to do so.
Hail Hail the Gangs All Here
A surprising number of club members
made the trek to Southgate to participate.
The whole event was great fun with horde
of people all around and plenty of
participating cars. Here is a roll call: Jim(Thats me.), Rich, Don, Pat, Daryl,
Dennis, Russ, Al, Tom, Ben, Ben & Alice,
Pete & Mary, Jack & Shirley, Tim & Mary
Ann and, our fearless leaders, Bob &
Joann. Thats 14 cars. Pretty good turnou
Id say.
All in all, a good, solid outing of died in the
wool (Has there ever been any died in the
cotton?) car enthusiasts.
Lets hope the Fort Street Construction
group gets their act together for next yearevent. Seems like last year there was the
same construction project on Fort. How
long does it take to redo a relatively short
stretch of roadway? Answer: As long as i
takes up to a decade. Oh no.

Burger Autistic School Benefit ShowBy Rich Pickens
We were hoping for a great event for
MSSR members to attend but
unfortunately the weather turned nasty
about the time the Autos for Autism was to
start. When I say nasty, we are talkingabout 2 inches of rain in a short amout of
time flooding streets and making the
grounds a swamp.
But dispite this mess, MSSR still had three
cars show up and was well represented at
the small turn out.
For those that did not go, probably a wise
choice since the show time of 5 PM found
buckets of rain which started at 4 and did
not get much better for the first hours.
For those that went, the rewards were
theirs, Phil Reilly, 1

Great Job All.
Phil is a Winner
A break in the weather found time for the
judging and enjoying the band and food
available as well as signing up for chances
to win a basket of your choice as well a
the 50/50. The first 50/50 winner donated
his winnings back to the charity event for
use at Burger School, a very nice gester
and what this event is all about.
Muddy Mess
Far from record crowds because of the
weather but all in all there were about 50
cars showing up in the muddy grass at
Garden City High School for theis worthy
cause. We hope for a better show nextyear, thanks all for your support.

New Product Test
Need protection from road rash for you car
on the next road trip, well we have a test o
a product made to eliminate rock and
stone chips in your paint. Dennis Peters
tried the product from 3M out on the recentrip to Columbus Ohio and the Goodguys
Nationals. The Willys has some fairly wide
fenders in the rear and there is no way to
protect them from the road short of taping
a blanket on the fenders, as a matter of
fact, Dennis has been known to put a
heavy film of clear plastic on the fenders in
an attempt to keep them chip free. The
new product is a spray on clear that is put
on with three coats and can be left on for
the trip and is not noticeable without a fine
eye up close. Like painting, you need to
mask off the area and protect the nonspray areas from overspray. The film
when dry is not noticeable except on the
taped off edges and not much at that.
After the trip there were some impacts
noticeable in the film. Dennis plans on
removing the film after the IDIDIT Show in
October so we will have a report from him
on how this material held up. Stay Tuned

Allen Park Cruise NightWell, mark this one down as a complete
bust. The weather in June has been a
mess with rain, rain, and more rain almost
every day and yes, this day had a threat of
rain but by early afternoon it became
apparent that it was going to be a nice
sunny afternoon, well apparent to
everyone except the Allen Part DDA who
had cancelled the event early in the day
but did not notify anyone except to put up a
small sign on the street that the event had
been cancelled. Thanks to the Kisers and
the Stockes, we got a call about midway
there and went instead to St. Roberts in
Redford to enjoy the company of other
MSSR members on a great afternoon. All
we can say is three thumbs down to the
Allen Park DDA for not considering those
of us who actually make their show.
South Lyon Cruise NightAh hah, we got a low 70 degree night with
sun shining for our annual trip to South
Lyon and their once a month cruise. We
were not the featured club but we had a
good showing of several members who
enjoyed the food and cars along with the
great company of car people. Prior to the
shutdown of the street so all the cars could
be angle parked along a two block stretch
in downtown South Lyon, everyone
headed off the various restaurants that line
the street. The hotel in South Lyon, owned
by the Baker family was a favorite of some;
the South Lyon Tavern attracted others
and the Ice Cream shop gathered in
several others including those who cannot
resist the summer favorite.
Nice Dinner Kurt, dont worry we wont
tell Sandy
Dang Jim, you wore out the pavement
parking the Stockemobile
The group gathered on the second block
and enjoyed the DJ and the talk on cars,
politics, and if you were not there, we
probably talked about you.
Street Closed so Parkum Now
Nice House and Car is Not Bad Either
Dont get much better than this
Put this one on your list for next year, you
will enjoy it and then we cannot talk abou
you.
Multi Lakes Cruise NightEleven cars and fifteen club members.
Pretty good turnout for a cruise night so
distant for a lot of us. The weather was
picture perfect, I mean, really picture
perfect. Okay, so here is the countdown:
Joanne & Bob, John & Claudia, Phil &
Ann, Danny & Karen, Al Piggot, John
Schumont, Jim Stocke, Bob Steinhaus,
Pat Ambroziak, Tom Mann and the ever
present, Russ.
Multilakes Conservation Club is a very
impressive complex dedicated to the
outdoor sportsman and food! Hey, that
dining hall is huge with long tables to sea
hundreds. And the food, well, as usual,
we made more than the best of it. All you
can eat broasted chicken, fried cod,
baked cod, corn, baked potato, macaron
& cheese, salad, corn bread and rolls for
nine bucks! Good deal and some of us
took advantage of the all you can eat
feature. The public is invited to this Frida
night happening too and the public came
in droves making for an opportunity to
meet some new folks and, with a big
crowd, a party atmosphere prevailed.
This is a low key event with parking in
and amongst trees for many and grass fo
those not early enough to take get a
shady spot. No matter, it was not hot but
it was sunny with crystal clear skies. The
parking area is very large and there were
many, many cars parked all over the
place. Nice venue with nice people too.
Ah, a great night to once again enjoy our
beautiful rides to the event and then enjo
great conversation with our fellow club
members. It doesnt get any better thanthis.

Hallelujah! God was on our side at this
event. Yea! The weather was picture perfect
for the whole show. Will wonders never
cease? There was none of that 103-degree
stuff to contend with this year thank God.
Jim Stocke, (Judy did not make the trip this
year.) Kurt and Sandy met at the Arborland
parking lot at 9:30 on a bright, sunny
morning to make the trek. Well, excited we
were as we trekked out to US23 and onto
I75 in Ohio. Hey, is that Rich, Russ, Don
and Pat in the rest area hightailing it out as
we come in? Guess they didnt see us.
Don up Front, Russ & Dennis in the
Mirror
Okay, get back on I75 and eventually turn
onto highway 15 by the giant Pioneer sugar
silos. We mosey on down to the famousCountry Corner restaurant just outside
Delaware. Good food but slow service as
this is a well liked place and it was packed.
Now, from Delaware it is a hop and skip to
the Ohio Expo Center to register.
The registration parking lot gives us a
preview of the upcoming event to start the
next day. Ahh. Street Rods galore.
Registration is a show by itself
Hoooooray! Good, we bump into Don, Rich,
Russ and Pat. We all sit for awhile under a
tree in the shade to watch the cars going
to and fro. After getting our car fix, off to
the Doubletree we go past the famous El
Acapulco Mexican restaurant, past the
Winking Lizard (No, not the Weeping
Lizard.) to arrive at our rather nice hotel, the Doubletree. After gorfing the free
chocolate chip cookie, we go to our rooms
to rest before we go to the El Acapulco for
that great taste of Mexico.
After our stomachs are overfull, we
discuss tomorrow. What? 5:30AM in the
parking lot? You dont really mean it do
you? Groan. Yeah, but we car folks are a
tough lot you know.
Buzzz, buzz. What the hell is that? Oh, its
the alarm. Its 4:30. Egad, what saneperson would ever get up that early? Hey
stop your grousing. We all drive off in the
darkness to arrive at the Expo Center.
Power Parking
Not So Much Power Parking
Cool! The shelter we covet as a prime
parking area is empty. Wow! We easily
and even leisurely park our precious
machines and wander over to watch the
incoming cars. But, agggaaaahhhh, no
cinnamon rolls? Oh my God, where is the
Bob Evans setup? Oh, suck it up guys
and gals, its not the end of the world, or is
it? A bagel, just a beat up old bagel, did
just fine.
John and Claudia join us on the
entrance road swelling our people count
to 10, a good representation of us
MSSRers. We sure have fun together
dont we? Hundreds of cars pass by us.
What magnificent machines they are.The ingenuity, creativity, craftsmanship
and engineering of us Americans is right
out there for anyone to see. What a
great sight.
A strange phenomenon occurred as we
watched the incoming cars for a few
hours it seemed like it should be
around noon and it was only 8AM. But,
thats okay because we realized that the
whole day of car gawking, visiting,
eating, gum flapping, swap meet
crawling and vendor hopping is stillahead of us.
But, another strange phenomenon
happened around 2PM we started to
poop out. Well, we had been walking
and gawking for 8 hours already. That is
enough to tire anyone out. We bug out a
little later; catch a little rest in our rooms
to prepare for the evenings fare, the
famous Winking Lizard restaurant. It is a
fun place and we lucked out getting
there just a few minutes ahead of a big
rush.
Winking Lizard
But the days fun is not yet over, no siree
bob-a-rooty my friend. We again hit the
roadin our machines to the host hotel,
the Crown Plaza. Their huge parking lot
was jammed with people and cars. It
was great fun to walk up and down the
aisles to see more cars. The hundreds o
folks milling about enhanced the effect
and we were again on a car high. But,
even tough car folks have to sleep too
you know.
Ohhhh no, earlier? 5AM? Why are you
punishing me? So, again we arrive even

earlier than yesterday to once again find the
first shelter empty. Last year we arrived at the
same time to claim the last four spaces in the
third shelter. Must have been that the
weather was predicted to be relatively cool
compared to last year and shelter parking
was not critical. Okay, park the cars and walkto the entrance road and, yes, a cinnamon
roll. Aha, yeah, we found a cinnamon roll
vendor just inside the gate. But, we got there
too early, 6AM and the rolls were not yet
ready. A half hour later Kurt, Sandy and Jim
were happily enjoying the Columbus shows
most famous treat.
All of us eagerly check out the area where
the contenders for Street Rod of the Year
and Street Machine of the Year are
displayed. Talk about fantastic. Shown here
are some of the most beautiful street rods inthe world. Take this years Ridler winner, a
gorgeous 40 Ford coupe. From the knockout
custom made taillights to the knockout
custom wheels and everything in between,
this is one magnificent car. Later it was
indeed chosen at Street Rod of the Year.
Ridler Winner and Goodguys Street Rod
of the Year Winner
Boogey Mans Deuce coupe was there with
its glistening candy red paint job. I talked
briefly with Boogey who expressed doubt that
he belonged in this lofty group of cars. Well,
he fit right in and was a very worthy
contender.
Boogey Man and His 32
Beautiful Buick Convertible
Take a look at that Buick convertible
with an interior so well done as to be
nearly unbelievable. These are only
three of about 20 or so contenders for
the top prize. The other cars in the
competition were also beyond
magnificent. It has to be a really tough
job to be a judge for a competition like
this. These cars make this show worth
the price of admission by itself.
Watch the incoming cars, walk the
countless aisles to admire car
greatness, walk the outside vendor area
to appreciate American engineering,
walk the inside vendor area to
appreciate American engineering, walk
the swap meet area and buy something,
sit and commiserate with friends, eat to
keep up the energy and just plain enjoy
a wonderful car show experience. Aint
this grand?
Afterthought: I bet some club members
avoid Columbus because of the very
early starts. Well, next year we may just
bring pop ups and park somewhere
else. Our early mornings are just too
early and we wear out too fast. Comon
MSSR members. The Columbus show is
one of the best!

But I got to tell you that the 30 year rule
does not seem to be working well from a
car nut point of view. While it gets the
number up, there are cars on the groundsthat certainly do not belong at a car show
and would not be allowed at most of the
local cruise nights that we attend. Take for
example a motor home that was
somebodys travel and camping option, a
Volvo, many MGs and a lot of cars (and I
mean a lot) that are rusty daily drivers with
holes in the fenders and held together with
duck tape. This year, you can bring in
anything 1983 and older, so please tell me
what was cool and something you had to
have in 1983. It no longer seems to be
about the car fan, it is about the money. A
four door Ford, Chevy, or Dodge just does
not get it in my opinion, and I sure hope
that Kalamazoo does not get flooded this
year with rust buckets that have no
redeeming social value.
Work on M-F, Cruise to Nats on Sat
The Pro Pick area only had a handful of
cars making the pick easy. In contrast, the
Goodguys Columbus was full of top notch
cars so in my opinion, NSRA needs to
address this issue and the sooner the
better. And yes Dwight, there were a few
Pacers on the grounds. So, the total
comment may be a great show with a lot of
low quality and boring cars. This by the
way was not only my opinion but a lot of
the Louisville regulars expressed the same
thoughts. A couple I know from UnionLake has not missed a show at Louisville
since day one told me this was their last
year, too many boring cars.
Enough of that, the show has value from
the standpoint of the vendor building, if you
need something they have it and all you
need is money. You could spend one day
alone looking inside where the air is so
cold you need a jacket just in case it is hot
outside but not this year. And if that is not
enough, you can go outside and venture
into tent city (yes, over half the grounds arecovered in big commercial tents that
people pay a price for in order to power
park on the pavement aka Mr. Stocke, but
guess what, you cannot photograph a car
in these tents because that does not work
well, a car that is a beautiful Cherry Red
looks Black under the big tent).
Next off to the swap meet to spend stupid
money on a rusty 5 window coupe for $25k
that will take another $25k to fix after you
just seen a new steel one inside for the
$25k price, are you serious seemed to be
the question most asked at the swap mee
section, most it seems just wanted
everyone to see their junk because it will
go home with them at the asking prices.
Tent City in the Background
All in all we had had enough and most left
Saturday and a few on Sunday morning
and a good nights sleep. See you next
year, not this one but I am sure MSSR wil
have a presence there.

We have done it again! Us MSSR folks
enjoyed another fabulous picnic at Pete
and Ninas. And, why you say at Pete and
Ninas instead of Jim and Judys as
originally planned? Well Judy just was not
up to it while fighting a very stubborn anddebilitating pinched nerve in her neck.
Thankfully, Pete and Nina came through at
the 11th hour to offer their great party house
to host the event. Kudos and accolades to
Pete and Nina.

Their gracious takeover of this summer
picnic was a demonstration of friendship.
Isnt the hallmark of a friend as one who is
there for you in your time of need? And lets
not forget Joann Nash for seeing that
everyone was notified of the change.
But, was the forecast for rain? Okay, so put
up three great big canopies over the newlyrefurbished deck to keep those gobs ofwater off of our sensitive bodies. Usually, ifcanopies are put up, then it is guaranteednot to rain. But not this time. Sure enough,a short, light shower came right during gorftime. Pete was a gentleman to theubiquitous cook, Art, by holding a protectiveumbrella while he went about his culinary
tasks. Thanks Art and thanks Pete.

One Fine Artist and MSSR Member Bill Carner
As I sat down to do this
article for the Newsletter,
I drew a blank. Go Figure.
Im looking at all the
different things Ive drawn over the years
and Im drawing a blank.
Who knew I would be sitting next to Matt
Ilitch in High School (Little Caesars fame).
I did his drafting work for 3 years, never
knew it.
I would be asked to represent our High
School as the youngest student to study Art
in Europe for 8 weeks in the early 70s.
Back in those days I was the go to guy
when others couldnt do their Art or Draftingwork. Lets get Carner to do it. Each
week 7-9 drawings displayed on the wall
were done by me (I should have charged
them).
I kept my Art quiet for a lot of years,
drawing was relaxing for me, a time to just
get away from everything, but as word got
out, that all changed.
A couple of people who really helped open
some doors were Mike Gibson (my close
friend). He ran our childrens program atour church. I did 100s of drawings for
Kids concerts, fairs, car washes, you name
it. I did it.
The other person which a lot of you older
members knew was Larry Block. He was
trying to come up with a design (border) for
his kitchen floor. I sat down one night and
drew it up, from there word spread. I was
doing Flyers, Swap Meet Signs, and cruise
night sheets etc., for different Clubs. There
were others I looked to for advice. One
being the late Dave Bell (Street RodMagazine) if I had questions Id call him, he
would always help me.
When I started building the 35 Ford I
couldnt come up with a color for the car. I
had this drawing of the 35. A Tee Shirt
Vendor at the 86 Nats in Columbus saw it.
He asked if I would mind making a tee shirt
with my drawing. Sure, why not! We made
the print, threw some color on it and had a
shirt with MY 35 Ford on it. He paid me
$25 for the shirt. (He probably sold
hundreds of them).
Bills Now Well Worn 35 Shirt
When we moved over the new Club House
(Gardner Westcott) we had this huge room
to hold our meetings in. The wall was a
blank canvas. Jim Boeher asked me if I
wanted to help him with the logo. Are you
kidding! Yes, we used the following items:
1 Decal, 1 Maxwell house Coffee can
(round circles), 2 yard sticks, pencils, tape
and paint. It took us two weeks. To this
day it still looks pretty nice.
Since I started doing tee-shirts, a couple
stand out for me.
Fowlerville Tee Shirt
Big Brother Big Sister Bowling Shirt
The 1st
Annual Car Show in Fowlerville,
the Cruise Night Shirts and a very special
one-Big Brothers and Big Sisters (Bowl for
Kids Sake) it was an honor for me when
they asked me to design the shirt. They
sold over 5000 shirts to help Kids
.
Not many people knew that when Wooly
Bullys was in Northville (back in the day) I
was one of the artists that did the posters-
flyers. There was a group that met every
month. It was pretty cool to get free food
for drawing.
Some of Bills Posters
I did a Christmas Party drawing that was
7X15. It took about a week to do. Rumo
has it, that it was hanging in the art class
at Garden City High School for a year.
One time we had a 50s party at our
church, I did eight drawings and before I
even got them hung, people were asking
for them.
Its amazing to go somewhere and see
your work hanging on the walls, case in
point- Bellacinos in Farmington (assorted
cruise event tee-shirts_ another inChildrens Hospital in Ann Arbor, I did a lot
of drawings for some kids there.
A Childrens Hospital Drawing
People have asked me how long does it
take to draw items. Some take one hour
of up to two to three weeks, ii all depends.
Coming up soon, I hope to have some
drawings in your favorite magazines. No
time frame has been set. No time frame
has been set. I have been contacted by
some car vendors for art in their 2014-
2015 catalogs.

The plan was to have a great lunch with
our lifetime member Ralph and Bev
Simons who have so gratuitously provided
us with our wonderful meeting place at
Gardner Westcott. The original date wasfor July 26 but unfortunately it had to be
changed with the passing of Bev Simons.
Bevs funeral was held on Saturday July
13th
and several members were present
with their street rods which would have
made Bev smile. As a matter of fact, when
Bev started to laugh she could not stop
and was one of her trademarks. Both
Ralph and Bev are known for their sense
of humor and there was always a party
atmosphere when they were around. Bev
kept the economy solid with her shopping
trips in any city Motor State traveled to.On one trip, the MSSR ladies took Beb to
Kmart arriving at 8:30 PM and once inside
they all went their separate ways to hustle
before closing. The last call came over the
PA several times before they finally saw
Bev heading to the register with her arms
loaded with as much as she could carry.
Ralphs Plymouth was over flowing once
again with shopping bags.
Bev and Ralph had been married for 59
years and she passed away on Ralphs 80
Birthday. An interesting story from Ralph
was the fact that on the day of Bevs
passing two Sandhill cranes came up into
the yard and approached the house in
Florida, something that they never would
do plus given the fact that Sandhill cranes
mate for life it is a fitting tribute to Bev and
Ralph.
The planned lunch was moved to July 17
and held at Bakers in Milford with Ralph
attending. Interesting stories were told, a
few lies or exaggerations came out but a
wonderful time was had by all in honor of
Ralph and Bev. Ralph is also a
woodworker and after many years of
Danny Plopan telling him he needed to
make wooden shoes for the club, Ralph
made him a pair several years ago. Ralph
signed the shoes at the luncheon so you
may here Danny coming before you see
him.

Ralph, Thank You for what you have
provided to MSSR and God Bless Bev, sh
will be missed.

The Fabulous Hines Park CruiseBy Jim Stocke
Fabulous it was for sure. The 2013 Hines
Park Cruise was a resounding success for
the organizers and for us MSSRers. Our
club fielded 32 cars and 65 people! Wow!
And, absolutely perfect weather- not a
cloud in the sky and temps in the high 80s.
A little warm but, hey, its August. We had
five canopies close to the road and one
behind those five. The canopies were
packed with us car enthusiasts watching
the constant parade of cool, motorized
metal go by.
Dont worry Mom; we are out of the sun
All the cars save for a few strays, were
show cars: street rods, muscle cars,
restored cars, 50s classics, 60s classics
and newer sorta classics like a beautifully
customized SSR, many second generation
Mustangs, lots of Corvettes, Chargers and
hordes of assorted others that, although
not old, fit the spirit of the one and only,
HINES PARK CRUISE 2013!
Feet Back, Cruisers coming Through
No Disco Hat, Anne whats going on
Get Back, Claudia is behind the Wheel
and there is Terror in Johns Eyes
Hey, I know that Guy, thats Pat
And that guy too, what no Propane
But first, you have to enter the park to get
to the fun and that was not easy. Maybe
the organizers plan these delays to
heighten the anticipation so as to increase
the enjoyment. Nah! Some of us had early
passes to allow entry at 7AM. They just
drove right in and set our area up. Thank
you setter uppers. But the gates did not
open for the rest of us until 9AM. Okay, so
what? Well trying to get thousands of our
precious rides through the one lane gate
took gobs and gobs of patience. So, after
about an hour or so of crawling in a long,
long line of some of the coolest cars on th
planet, you arrive at, ta da, Maple Grove,
our home for the day. The frustration
disappeared quickly after a nice cup of
coffee, a few really good donuts and some
gum flapping with our fellow club
members.
This great event really lends itself to
cruisin up and down. The congestionwasnot stifling making trips on the Drive great
fun. The easy in and out of our area helpe
out a lot for those doing the crusin too.
This is sounding better all the time isnt it?
This event was our last summer party of
the season and we took advantage of the
ample time to visit with so many of ourfellow club members and to meet and talk
with the guests of members. This
camaraderie is at the heart of an event like
this and what a great place to exercise thi
camaraderie.
And Yellow is the color of the Day
Lunch time is approaching, yea! But
where is the food? Hey Joanne and Karen
we MSSRers are waiting to do what we do
best eat food. Oh, oh, seems there was
slight problem at the gate. Dan and Judy
Murray, who volunteered to get the food,
were not allowed out of the park with their
GTO. What? Dans son, who was riding
along, had his civilian car outside the gate

Back to the Bricks ReportBy Gary Lazette
It is mid August and time for the WoodwardCruise and the Back to the Bricks. Most ofMotor State went to Woodward. Audreyand I went to Back To The Bricks forThursday, Friday, and Saturday. We were
joined on Saturday by fellow MotorStarters; Bob and JoAnn, Art and Sandy, and Pete and Mary.
It was the 9th. annual B2B weekend. On
Thursday we cruised during the day andthen took a seat at the old G.M. building towatch the cruisers go by. We were askedto park with the Buick Club of America towatch the parade of cars and they gave usa place right up front.
Friday we cruised and then went to a bigcruise in at Dukes Car Stereo where theyserved hot dogs, chips and drinks. We latemoved downtown to secure a spot for theevening. There was a free Motown concertand a sock hop.
Saturday was the big show and the streets
were only open to foot traffic and acordingto the TV station there was over 500,000people over the weekend and 40,000 cars
The attractions on Saturday were:
110 th. anniversary party for Buic
The 4th. Annual Corvette reunionand the 60th. anniversary of theCorvette
The original Ram Chargers werethere with two cars on display: an
old Super Stocker and the "49"Plymouth " The High and theMighty" they did periodicalstartups of both cars ever hour orso. They also did an autographsession through the day.
Bob with the assistance of Art did safetyinspections. After a long day of walking, looking at cars and visiting and consumingsnacks every one left for the trek homeuntil next year.
Continued from Prior Page
and he eventually picked up the food at the
Chicken Shack in Westland.
I Smell Chicken
All came out well but the delay was
substantial. It made us appreciate the food
that much more. The very tasty chicken, the
cole slaw and really delightful potatoes were
held hostage for awhile but things got settled
and out came the food. Oh boy, oh boy.
Food, food, food. The Chicken Shack makes
some of the best picnic food around we soon
found out.
Cruisin is the word of the Day
I almost forgot to mention one great thing
about our venue. We shared Maple Grove
with a club name Shady Characters.
Seems they had the planned ahead and had
two porta potties delivered to the site. But,
they paid for them and we did not. Well,
Shady Characters were nice friendly,
outgoing folks who graciously allowed us to
use their poopers. This privilege solved the
bugaboo of no facilities on the cruise route.
Next year, if Shadys are coming, we may
want to share the cost of the poopers.
Our Spot for the Cruise
Yes we did have fun
It is probably appropriate to briefly talk
about the congested entrance situation.
Some folks waited for two hours to get
through the line! I waited for about one
hour after arriving at the back of the line
at 9AM. This is totally unacceptable.
Folks are not going to wait that long for a
cruise no matter how good it is. The
organizers need to hear from us about
this situation. Don Nicholson is the chiefpromoter of the cruise. His email is
[email protected]. He needs to
hear our concerns.
No Circus Wagons Here
Just a bunch of cool cars
And Cool People
Brilliant sunshine, great food, car guys, car
gals, street rods, 50s cars, 60s cars, 70s
cars, muscle cars, restored cars, newer
special interest cars, cool trucks Hines
had them all. What a great day!

Woodward Dream CruiseBy Rich Pickens
Absolutely flawless weather welcomed the
19th
Annual Woodward Dream Cruise as
approximately 15 MSSR cars made their
way to Bashas for our annual stop at this
legendary event. We have learned that you
must arrive early to avoid the gridlock that
started happening way earlier than the past
normal and to secure a space along the
road to watch the cars. The cruising went
into overdrive by 8 AM as the road filled
with everything you could imagine as well
as some that only a warped mind dreamed
up.
WT_#*) did he do OMG
Camaro - chrome with 30 Inch Wheels
By our group count, one street rod followed
by over 60 muscle cars was the average
flow we saw. Or to put it into total
perspective, one street rod, 60 muscle cars
and 150 daily drivers. Yes, by 9:30 AM the
street was clogged with SUVs, Mini Vans,
and BMWs (yes this is Royal Oak) and by
2 PM, hardly any street rods and minimal
muscle cars present on the street as we
went into almost a 90% daily driver gridlock
mode.
Where are the Classic Cars????? SUV
Gridlock
The streets would not have been clogged
and traffic would have been a nice flow if
not for all the cars being used as
sightseeing methods for Mom and Dad and
the kids. No wonder America is getting fat,
people, you got to have more fun by taking
a walk on the wild side.
Just put a Hulk and Spiderman in the
back of your pickup and everyone will
think you are cool
Ok, I feel better but darn, we sure have lost
our ability to have fun unless it is from 100
feet away through a glass window.
So it was big this year, weather being the
main factor, people flock to it, good or bad,
it is a tradition and event that no one wants
to miss. MSSR took center stage at the
entrance to Bashas with Phil Reillys Ford
Convertible, Don McKinnons Ford Coupe
and Dennis Peters Willys protected from

Frankenmuth AutofestBy Rich Pickens
In Michigan, the end of the car cruisin
season is marked by a couple of events in
September giving us both joy and sadness.
The NSRA Nats North has traditionally
been something that we all enjoy but we
have to mentally note that it is almost time
to park them for their winter hibernation
soon after this event.
But before Kalamazoo, we have a great
event to check out in Frankenmuth
Michigan known simply as Autofest. This
has been a Michigan tradition for many
years now and in 2013 it was one of the
finest and best attended ever. While you
will find a lot of member of MSSR visiting
for the day, only a couple attends the event
for the three days due to the outrageous
hotel cost that is totally out of control at this
event. Hotel minimums of three nights at
rates well above the 200 dollar per night
rates push the cost of attending this event
to the above 1000 dollar range considering
fuel, food and housing together. This
makes the three nights stay in Kalamazoo
a real bargain.
So what happens is that a lot of us, drive
up in the morning and return home at night
mainly on Friday to enjoy the cars on the
show field as well as the cruising throughthe day on the main drag as well as the
street closing at 5 PM when a bunch of
cars are parked for free spectator viewing.
This year, the drag cars from the 60s lead
the parade of cars down the main street
marking the start of the rush to get the cars
on the street for spectator viewing.
Here comes the Ramchargers
The viewing is an event in itself, people
gridlock walking up and down the main
drag just to try to see over a bunch of
people to see the nice cars. My secret is to
walk the sidewalks where most do not go
and you can actually move, just like a
service drive on a 5 PM rush hour freeway
back up.
The Spectators Fill the Streets
Dennis Gage was There
Phil and Ann Cruise the Streets
Just one of the many Bands
The show is not only the cars on the street
but almost every business and hotel along
the way has bands playing everything from
rock to county to polkas so the ears also get
a work out at the Friday night street closing.
MSSR Members cars we saw were Ben
and Alice Suthers Model A double AA
pickup in the show field and Bill Ballards
Caddy Limo there and on the street that
day.
Bens New Old Truck
And Bills Cady on the Street
This event is a do not miss especially
given the fact that this marks the closing
of the season but is also marked by thestart of the really pleasant Michigan fall
weather. Hope to see you there next
year.

Cruisin and Other RamblingsBy the Editor
Winter is never fun for car people, cant
drive them, real cold in the garage so can
only work on the car for short periods
before the old bones get chilled but then
there is always the hope of summer
coming to help offset the pain of the coldweather. This summer, the west
experienced dry conditions, temps above
100 and worst of all wildfires that
destroyed a whole lot of homes. Michigan
did not have a good start for summer either
with cool temps requiring jackets, and rain,
a whole lot of rain. Even in July, the
Goodguys event in Columbus required a
sweatshirt or jacket till at least 10 AM and
this considering last year with 105 degrees
is a big change. I dont call it global
warming anymore, just a strange time that
we have to endure.
Well it finally happened; the Telegraph
Cruise has gone commercial after many
years of being a nice free event. In Taylor
they have now closed off an entire stretch
from I94 for at least a mile in order to make
a buck off of the cruisers by charging
anywhere from $5 to $10 to park your car.
About the only free spot left was down by
the Home Depot which use to be the
center of the cruise but now appears to be
the last free spot to park. We had a few
people from MSSR get a few spots at
Home Depot through the effort of Gary
Lazette and hopefully they will still be there
and free next year.
What events do you enjoy most; you need
to express your opinions to the Board
Members so that plans can be made to
enjoy the events that you favor. We are
guessing what you like so pleas stand up
and let us know which ones to put on the
calendar for next year.
If the summer averaged 10 degrees below
normal, does that mean the winter will be
that way too, look out Florida, a lot of us
heading your way.
As noticed in this issue, we would be
missing a report on Back to the Bricks if it
had not been for Gary Lazette, well, we
cannot be everywhere so any help or
reports on these events would help fill the
newsletter. Just remember that between
Jim Stocke and me, you are getting asmany reports as we can handle so if there
is an event you are at, write up a report.
I seem to be a little cranky this issue after
looking over the comments on Telegraph,
Woodward and Louisville but after
spending time looking forward to these
events there is a level of disappointment
after attending. Most of us look for the
level of craftsmanship, innovation, and
unique ideas when looking at cars but
sadly there appears that most of these
qualities are going away as some consider
a cool car something with bigger wheels as
the only redeeming quality. Oh yes, Duck
Tape holding a fender on and covering rust
holes as seen at Louisville must fill the
craftsmanship category.
As always check before going, to make
sure us old people did not make a
mistake on the date or time

Cruising since 1976FUN WITH CARS, FAMILY and FRIENDS
The Motor State Street Rod Car Club was founded in 1976
as a social club to promote safe, family enjoyment of
modified vehicles.
The club is a non-profit benevolent organization
established to promote the enjoyment of older vehicles
and protect the specialized interests of its members.
In addition, the club lives up to its motto of "Fun with Cars,
Family and Friends" with less structured activities that may
include casual cruising, picnics, dances, dinners, swapmeets, car shows, rod runs, cruise-ins, and monthly
meetings. Funds raised every year are donated to various
needy causes.
Tom Mann
37 Ford Coupe
The Ford line of cars was updated in 1937 with one major
change the introduction of an entry-level 136 CID (2.2 L)
V8 in addition to the popular 221 CID (3.6 L) flathead V8.
The model was a refresh of its predecessor, the Model 48
(itself based on the Model 40A), and was the company's
main product. It was redesigned more thoroughly in 1941.
At the start of production, it cost $850.
The 1937 Ford featured a more rounded look with fine
horizontal bars in the convex front and hood-side grilles. The front grille was V-shaped, rather than following the
fenders into a pentagon shape, as on the 1936 model.
Faired-in headlights were a major modernization found on
both the Standard and Deluxe trim versions, though much
of the rest of the design was shared between Ford's two
lines. A larger water pump was used to help aid in cooling.
Slantback' sedans gained a rear trunk door, though space
was limited, and 'Trunkback' versions continued gaining
sales. The station wagon had seating for eight passengers.
A 4 door "convertible sedan" with roll up windows wasoffered in small numbers in the Deluxe series.
