IflAte AeAUfSB IISAQ ^99ARGUMENTS FOR WAR

Point One: There is no doubt that Iraq had weapons ofmass destruction. We therefore have no doubtthat they are hiding them effectively from the inspectors and refusing to give them up.Point Two: History teaches repeatedly that the longer we wait to deal with rogue and ambitiousdictators the more costly it will be. Hitler could have been stopped anumber of times at aprobable costofjust afew thousand lives instead ofthe millions it ultimately cost to stop him. With weapons ofmass destruction and modern technology, Saddam can do in minutes what it took Hitler years to do.Point Three: Sanctions cost them billion of dollars, and they are risking adevastating war just tokeep them. They obviously value them very highly, which they would not do ifthey did not have anintended use for them. The uses could be -attacking their neighbors, Israel, or selling them to terroristsand other states. Allowing Iraq to keep these weapons is extremely dangerous and agenuine threat toworld peace.Point Four: Iraq is harboring terrorists, terrorist training bases, and is in league with A1 Qeda andother terrorist organizations that are enemies of the US, making the present regime athreat to possiblyeven more devastating attacks on the US.Point Five: Sanctions and diplomatic efforts have not accomplished anything with Iraq. Wastingmore time only gives Saddam more time to develop more weapons ofmass destruction, hide them and/ or distribute them.

ARGUMENTS AGAINST WARPoint One: War will destroy many lives and should always be our very last resort.Point Two: Saddam is not the madman that Western propaganda has made him out to be. No dictatoris anice guy, but he has not done anything worse than other dictators that we are not threatening. Many stories ofhis ruthless acts were fabricated and were later proven to be false. There wereatrocities in Kuwait, but it was never reported how Saddam had the responsible officers punished, andin some cases executed.PointThree: Most Iraqis are loyal to Saddam and it is their will for him to stay in power. Manythings, which those who live under democracy consider ruthless oppression, are still very commonpolicies in most countries of the world. This does not make it right, but the people generally do notknow an3^hing different. Amajor US magazine called Saddam "the Arab leader who cares the most forhis people" just six weeks before the same magazine called him "worse than Hitler." Why the change?Point Four. The same reasons that are used to take weapons away from him are reasons that couldbe used to take them away from the US. For example, the US maintains its arsenal for defensivepurposes as deterrence against aggressors. It seems that Saddam is doing the same. Saddam used gasagainst the Kurds, but the US used nuclear bombs against Japan. The US did this to save lives on bothsides. Saddam can argue that he did the same with the Kurds, to demonstrate his power and thereforeend the conflict that would ultimately kill many more.Point Five: Never has the US attacked another country first without provocation or being attacked. There is no legal or moral justification for doing this; it will forever ruin the US reputation as afair andjust nation. This will galvanize anti-US feelings among Islamic people +other nations. It will alsoincite terrorist attacks against the US, further destabilizing world politics and world economy.Point Six. There is no proofor convincing evidence that Iraq is in league with terrorists, terroristorganizations, and is in fact been one of the strongest bulwarks against Islamic extremism among all ofthe Islamic states. Colin Powell's assertion ofthe terrorist training base on Iraqi soil undermined hisown argument, and to some, his credibility. Ifthis was aterrorist base it was in territory controlled bythe Kurds, not Saddam. If this was aterrorist training base why haven't we attacked it as our jetsobviously fly over it daily patrolling the "No Fly Zone?"Point Sovon: Just because sanctions and diplomatic efforts have not worked yet, maybe strongerones would, and we should not give up on them yet.

Point Eight: North Korea + A1 Qeda are more dangerous. Our fixation with Iraq is consuming manyresources that should be used to solve these more important issues.

SUMMARY

Point One: There is merit to both sides ofthis issue. The real point of dispute is not whether Iraqshould be made to give up their weapons of mass destruction, butwhether a US led invasion ofIraq ismerited in this situation or at this time.Point Two: It is possible that stronger sanctions and diplomatic efforts could work, but they wouldnothave a chance without thevery real threat ofwarthat is now looming. Bush's push forwar couldvery well bethe best, most effective, diplomatic scheme ofall. The hard line that he isnow taking, isthe best chance for this to be worked out peacefiilly, eventhough it maywell endup that we mustgo towar. If that happens itwill bea tragedy forboth sides, causing far more future problems, butthealternatives would be even worse. There are no easy solutions. There are no perfect solutions in thisimperfect world, and there is no perfect leadership in it either.Point Three: The weapons ofmass destruction need to beremoved from Iraq, but the removal ofSaddam should not necessarily belinked with this. There isno question that he isa ruthless man—heisa dictator! Hehas family members who would be more dangerous inpower, and there are some inhis regime that would bemore dangerous. To leave Saddam inplace has two significant advantages:Firstly, The enemy you know is usually better than the one you do not know. The replacement wouldalmost certainly turn outto befar worse. Ifweputourown man in place, wewill almost certainlyhave to maintain a long-term occupation ofIraqto some degree, just aswe arein Afghanistan. We maythink we are effectively hitting the problem while all along we are the ones being tied up, and couldquickly find ourselves tootied up to deal with aneven more dangerous threat that comes along.Secondly, With Saddam in power there remains an excuse for patrolling Iraq, anexcuse wewould nothave for long if he were not there.Point Four: The removal of Saddam from powerin Iraq will almost certainly have a negative impactonChristians and those of other religions inIraq, where they now enjoy themost Religious jfreedom intheMiddle East. Saddam himself approved the showing of the movie "Jesus" twice onIraqi television. He has maintained his stance on the importance of religious liberty (this is whyhe is so hated bytheIslamic extremists).Point Five: North Korea is a far more dangerous threat to the US and the world. They are theprimiiry ones exporting weapons to terrorists. This isone ofthe most dangerous countries onearth. Itwill get more dangerous every day if it isnot confronted, and it will likely use to the fullest ourpreoccupation with Iraq.Point Six: The conflictbetween India andPakistanis headed toward becoming the first exchange ofnuclear weapons inawar between two countries. The whole world will suffer terribly from this.Point Seven: The best solution to theproblem would be if Saddam would give up theweapons ofmass destruction. This would remove any justification for an invasion, and it would enable thesanctions to be lifted that are still causing terrible suffering in Iraq. The US has notbeen totally just inits dealings with Iraq either. There are things that we need to make right that could again make Iraq themost pro-Western, pro-United States Islamic nation that it once was. If there isgoing to be a way toturn the tide against the Islamic extremism that threatens the entire modem world, this nation is one ofthe keys to it. Believe itor not, Saddam can beone ofthe keys to this. The Lord used Nebuchadnezzar,to which Saddam has liked to compare himself. Would that not bethe greatest victory ofall - that theLord would use Saddam asanexample ofHis Power of redemption and reconciliation? The Lord givesfar more authority toHis people than His people even realize, and He will not do this without theprayers of His people.

FINALLY. Let us keep our focus as Christians that the kingdom ofGod alone cannot be shaken. Thekingdom is coming, and those who are building their lives on the only foundation that cannot beshaken have nothing to worry about regardless of what happens intheworld.
