Christmas starts with..?When I was growing up, living near Lancaster, I used to look forward to early December and the special Christmas shopping nights in the city centre. A sparkling mixture of lights and sounds that started the Christmas season and gave us real excitement for what was to come. I can still see the food stalls, the Salvation Army band, the huge Christmas tree and even the crush of shoppers looking for gifts that didn’t spoil the evening. These days Christmas seems to start as soon as the supermarkets bring out the tinsel and mince pies in about March (slight exaggeration) but several friends I know have normally completed their present buying in early October. This year an ad campaign is being launched with the simple slogan. ‘Christmas starts with Christ’. The shopping, the gifts, the food, the travel, the trees and decoration are all good and well, but Christmas is all about Christ. According to research 51% see Jesus entirely irrelevant to their Christmas season yet at Christmas we celebrate his birthday, his life, his words, his ministry, his death and the precious link to that Easter morning. How can he figure is your celebrations this year?Revd Andrew Axon St. Philip & St. James Church, Larkhay Road, Hucclecote www.hucclecotechurch.org

Dave’s top tipsDave’s top tipsDave’s top tipsDave’s top tips Filling a hole in hollow walls

To repair a hole in a hollow door, wall, or ceiling, trim the edge of the hole and prepare a piece of timber or plasterboard. Cut the new piece the same width as the widest part of the hole and a little longer than the height of the hole. Insert a screw just a couple of threads into the middle of the piece, to enable you to pick up the piece and maneuver it. Go around the edge with some heavy duty adhesive, and, using the screw, push the piece into the hole.

Once you have it all the way in, pull back on the screw so the adhesive touches the back of the hole surround. Use gentle pulling pressure, while moving around slightly to ensure good contact between the adhesive and the back of the surface, until you are sure the adhesive will hold the piece in place at which time you can remove the screw. Leave for 24 hours and the hole can then be filled with filler suitable for the surface you are repairing.

Be sure to check out our website at www.dstevens999.co.uk for more top tips along with some great video tutorials to help you with your DIY skills.

Dave Stevens.

The winter season is officially upon us and the biting winds, central heating and freezing temperatures can zap the life out of your skin, leaving it feeling tight, itchy, dry and uncomfortable. With so many skin care products on the High Street finding the best skin care routine can be a nightmare. It may be tempting to mix and match various different products across multiple ranges but this doesn’t always allow the synergy necessary to create radiant healthy skin. This time of year the biggest problems for most people are dry skin and spots. A good daily regime should start with a nourishing pH balanced cleanser to gently cleanse the skin and unclog the pores. An alcohol-free hydrating toner will help tone, condition, and moisturise the skin without drying it out. Toning the skin also helps to tighten the pores. The next step should be to apply a day lotion to moisturise and with SPF to protect. A good quality oil-free serum under your daily moisturiser can also help to give your skin an extra boost of hydration to help keep it in balance. At night it is important to remove all makeup and debris by repeating the cleansing and toning before applying a rich night cream to replenish the skin and retain moisture. Collagen and elastin infused creams can reduce fine lines and wrinkles.Cell turnover is sluggish during colder periods so your skin will also benefit from a bi-weekly face mask and regular exfoliation to leave your skin bright and healthy. It’s important to mention that this information isn’t just for women! Whilst I appreciate a man may not spend 10 minutes twice daily on skincare, cleansing and moisturising for a couple of minutes each day is still beneficial! When it comes to makeup ladies, natural mineral makeup is very much the way forward. Avoid heavy pore blocking foundations and concealers. Mineral makeups are infused with nutrients to keep the skin healthy whilst also allowing the skin to breathe. Look out for ranges that combine calming agents such as orchid extracts. Using a facial cleansing regime and makeup range all from the same company will work synergistically to keep your skin healthy and glowing all winter long!
