Chairman’s report
The end of the season is fast approaching I encourage everyone to enjoy the final 4 rounds before finals. The strength of our club is in the way we support each other and have fun together. As a player it is great to play in front of supportive crowds cheering and applauding so I am throwing down the challenge to you one and all to get out and watch a men’s game a women’s game and a junior’s game before the season ends. Wear your Red White and Blue loud and proud and let the other Clubs know we are a force to be reckoned with.
Keep an eye out for the invitation to our end of season dinner as we want this celebration of a season well played to be shared by everyone.
Go Dees!!!!

Round 14 - WPL 3 vs Camberwell 1 Round 14 for the women's PL side was always going to be a tough game however we knew that if we put our game plan into action we would come out on top. Within the first ten minutes of the match Camberwell were on top with a handy field goal. Shortly after we came back with a goal off a quick break away topped off by Laura Castleden. We then scored another goal off a straight hit off a corner later in the half. At half time we were up 2-1 however needed to stay focused to get the three points. With some quick ball movement and a high work rate we managed to end up winning the game 3-1. The third goal scored by Sarah Breen with a lovely hit off a short corner. It wasn't an easy game but resulted in a good hard fought win. Round 14 – WPLR 0 vs Camberwell 0 Took the field on a windy afternoon the Dees looked sharp and ready to take on Camberwell. All overall the game was a tough one to play, both teams kept on their toes and played competitive hockey. The game ended in a draw, no goals were scored, it was a great effort from the team and “we played our hearts out”. Go Dees!!!! Round 13 - WPE 1 vs Knox 0 Finally a home game at MHS and we celebrated with a win. We continued our 110% attitude with some lovely one two combinations all over the field. This week we got to play more attacking hockey with lots of circle play and drives down left and right. Our goal came off a short corner that Adi Glancy hit towards left post for Sally but it hit a defenders foot and bounced into the goal instead. For once the bounce had gone our way. We made full use of our home game and enjoyed the club rooms after the game to catch up with the baby brigade on the balcony
Round 15 - WPE 1 vs Footscray 0 On a lovely sunny afternoon we headed over the West Gate Bridge to Footscray. We really enjoyed our game with good linking all over the field and switching as well as short balls to each other. With good calling we were able to take our time and didn't rush our passes as much as we have been doing. Our goal came when Mandy crossed the ball to Mary, in the circle, who put it in to Rose who put it past the keeper and into the back of the net. Yay team! Round 14 – MMBC 0 vs TEM Red 7 Great to see these young fellows playing regularly in Men Metro B Central (the 7s), bringing the average age down!
From left to right – Connor, James, Fraser, Harry and Toby Round 15 – MPD 0 vs Southern United 4 In the interest of making the match more even (we won our previous encounter 4-3), we dropped or rested several key players (seriously who accepts an invite to a wedding during hockey season). With 3 juniors keeping the average age down, we went into the match full of confidence that there would be a few coldies waiting for us post game. The first half was a fairly one sided affair with Sharps doing his best to keep us in the game, but Southern took their (large number of) chances and smashed in 3 goals, including a deadly drag flick from one of their import players. Unfortunately we missed a deflection chance, which would have given us some hope going into half time.
It was a much better effort after half time which saw several opportunities created by the teams more experienced strikers, who were unlucky not to score. Despite this better effort, Southern were able to slot another well taken goal to bring the unofficial score to 4-0. With this result our journey in 2016 is now destined to end in August. On the bright side, it will give us an opportunity to do more of what we're good at, drinking beer, providing vocal "support" and "encouragement" and (hopefully) watching the other teams win some flags. Round 15 – MPF 0 vs Brumbies 9 Brumbies sitting top of the ladder were always going to be formidable opponents this weekend. With a strong core of experienced players and young legs, they passed the ball around to open up spaces in our midfield and kept our defense under intense and constant pressure. To compound matters, the failure of our club umpire to show up threatened to deplete our playing numbers further with some of our usual players missing in action. Our coach was left with no option but to assume umpiring duties. We were fortunate to have Doug Hemmingway from MPD and Scott Willis from our Veterans’ squad help us out. Hamish Ferguson, on a steep learning curve, made some fantastic saves and gets stronger every week. Toby Dunn rose to the challenge joining our squad as MMB had a bye this weekend. Hopefully this taste will encourage him to DU in the last few weeks of the season. Ryan Glasson created a few good scoring opportunities moving up from his usual halfback position. Will Cranwell made good use of the ball up front but could not get the finish he hoped for. Craig McGrath, Ned McCarron and Josh Schmalenbach worked tirelessly throughout the game, with Simon Hood adding his usual penetrating passes and gadget arm tackles when spelling the midfielders. Jeetu Khusal, Shaun Glasson and Nigel Clarke provided a robust defense in the first half making good use of the ball to feed the midfield but with legs tiring under the weight of the Brumbies attack, we were overwhelmed in the second half.
Round 12 – MPF 1 vs Waverley 0
We headed down to the Smurf turf on a pleasant sunny Sunday afternoon to play against Waverley who sat one position above us on the ladder.
We started the game in a very positive manner moving the ball around well and defending in a very positive manner. Our midfielders Chris Zale, Craig McGrath, Ned Mc. Carron really zipped the ball around to our forwards. Josh Schmalenbach was having a great game at left wing dispossessing their defenders and providing us with great circle penetrations. Our new addition to the family James Fox was creating havoc to the Waverley defence. We had plenty of circle penetrations but could not convert from field play or short corners. We had solid defence from our goalkeeper Hamish Fergusson, and our backs Nigel Clark and Shaun Glasson and half backs Jeetu Khusal and Ryan Glasson.
Half time came and went with the scores still tied at 0 – 0. With approximately 10 minutes to go Dr. Will Cranwell scored a great goal after a super cross from Russell “Pumpkin” Hunter. We defended well making sure that Waverley didn’t get an easy equaliser. Dr. Will had another chance to score from a short corner but just missed the left post. We survived the onslaught and won the game.
We sang the club song with Hamish in the centre and we all enjoyed the rest of the afternoon.

Mark ‘Bucky’ Hodgson is known by everyone at MCC Hockey Section, in fact he is probably the only club member that ALL our club members know. Bucky’s commitment to the club is relentless: Opening and closing our facilities, stocking and running the kiosk/bar, ensuring the changing rooms
are open, putting the goals out on the pitch, setting up the BBQ for the fundraising clubrooms, the list goes on….
