Thanksgiving for Vets On November 27, the American Legion Post 928 hosted a Thanksgiving feast for Veterans in the community and the Air Force Academy Hockey team. Over 75 dinners were served and all of the food was donated by Legion members. The Air Force Falcons home is in Colorado and they were in town playing Canisius at the newly built Harbor Cen-ter. On the team is a local man from Derby Kyle Mackey. This dinner was organized with the help of member Chuck Kraven and over 20 volunteers made this holiday special.

Field Trip to Wegmans The students in Mrs. Wegrzynowski’s and Mrs. Takacs’ fourth grade classes from J. T. Waugh Elementary School recently took a Field Trip to Wegmans. The trip was titled Eat Well Live Well. The students were broken up into groups and each visited the Produce, Bakery, Meat & Sea-food and the Cheese Departments. At each department the students were able to sample healthy foods and learn about the suggested daily allowance for a strong healthy body. Pictured are students from Mrs. Wegrzynowski’s Class.

Southtowns Catholic School Shares Saint Lucy's Wheat

Students at Southtowns Catholic School were given wheat to plant for Saint Lucy's Day. The tradition of plant-ing wheat on Saint Lucy's Day (December 13) comes from Hungary, Croatia, and other European nations. If you plant the seeds in a round dish and water them, the seeds will germinate and the shoots will be several inches high by Christmas. The new shoots remind us of the new life that was born in Bethlehem. Pictured: Chad English, Savannah Reynolds, Lily Katra & Braeden Griffin.

By Sam StruckhoffPICKS OF THE WEEK“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” (PG-13) -- With the city under the heel of the ruthless Foot Clan, our best hope lies in four grotesque heroes rising from the sew-ers of 1980s and ‘90s pop culture. The team of turtles -- that’s Leonardo, Donatello, Michaelangelo and Raphael -- spew groan-worthy one-liners while leaping from ex-plosions and fi ghting various thugs. The series’ supervil-lain, Shredder, gets a sharp robo-suit instead of the usual metal-plated outfi t. While this reviewer will nev-er forget the role The Turtles played in his younger years, this is sadly one of the most forgettable fl icks of the sum-mer. Even big-budget action fl icks cashing in on highly marketable nostalgic action franchises need to have a little charm, a pinch of origi-nality. While the action fl ash-es continually on screen, the genuine thrills are brief and far between.

“Maze Runner” (PG-13) -- In another adaptation of a young-adult novel, we fi nd familiar issues handled in a slightly new way. Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) wakes up in an unfamiliar place, appar-ently dropped off with a col-ony of other stranded teenage boys inhabiting what they call The Glades. Thomas falls in with a group of boys who run through a nearby mechanized maze -- a huge complex that’s full of traps and nasty critters. Thomas and the others struggle to stay alive, reclaim their lost memories and to make sense what has happened to them.There is a fun aspect to watching the characters

strive against the contrived challenges of their world. With a steady trickle of tan-talizing plot development, you might get hooked -- like TV’s “Lost” -- into watching how this dark fi ctional world unfolds.

“This is Where I Leave You” (R) -- With an awesome A-list cast, this family drama-comedy is a bit of a let down. Jason Bateman and Tina Fey (both Emmy-winners with great histories of down-to-earth comedy) headline as siblings in a fraught fam-ily that just lost their father. Dad’s last wish is to have the whole family -- four adult siblings and Mom (Jane Fon-da) -- sit shiva and mourn together for seven days. The twist is that, of course, these people can barely stand each other under the weight of so

much baggage. With all of this emotion and cast to carryit, the fi lm relies too much onslapstick and low-end gags.

“Skeleton Twins” (R) -- Ina different dramedy aboutadult siblings forced into a reluctant reunion, two dif-ferent comedic actors makea much better effort. Former“SNL” campaigners BillHader and Kristen Wiig playa pair of fraternal twins whowere close throughout child-hood, but have separated todifferent sides of the countryin adulthood. Pulled togetherby forces outside of theircontrol, together the twins must face all the ways theirlives have not gone to plan.Among many troubles, Milo(Hader) is not the A-list actorhe’d dreamed of being, andMaggie (Wiig) is facing dis-illusionment in her marriage.
