What theexploitableresult is

The o bjective o f the Trace Methodology is t o s upport the co mpanies in d esign, set-up a ndoperate a specic t raceability ch ain. To achieve this, the Trace Methodology co mprehendsfour methods:

- Basic Trace M ethodology

- Methodology for legal compliance

- Methodolgy for support information

- Methodology for op erational concept

The main sco pe of the Methodology is to:

Enable the design and specication of a company specic t raceability co ncept andoptionally i n specication of an envisaged specic traceability c oncept along a specicsupply ch ain.

Guarantee that the company s pecic traceability c oncept is i n agreement with legalrequirements ( Article 18, EC Regulation 1 78/2002).

Guarantee t hat the c ompany sp ecic t raceability co ncept is b ased o n a ctual processexecution already implemented in the company.

Guarantee a t ime optimal execution concerning specication of a co mpany s pecictraceability c oncept and optional of a specic supply c hain.

Guarantee that all legally required and d esired information a re identied.

Support users in detailed specication of activities t o be executed w.r.t. traceability, aswell as o f measures t o be taken to achieve electronic a vailability o f all traceabilityinformation required.

Support SMEs i n identication of support information which they could provided to theircustomers an d therewith to offer SMEs the chance to b ecome su ccessful incompetition and to strengthen their position in the marked.

Support users in the selection of the most suitable software architecture in order tominimize the costs and the effort for the set-up phase and during the daily a ctivities.(Methodology for op erational concept )

Product Trace X ML Protocol


The Trace XML Protocol is a protocol supporting the data collection from the traceabilitysystems in c ompanies b elonging to the a gri-food s ector. The d enition o f the Trace XMLprotocol is o ne of the most important objective of the project. It is a communication protocoldeveloped in order to share the information strictly related to the traceability purposestowards the USERS (consumers, public officers et c.). The Trace XML Protocol is pu blic an dit could represent the rst step towards the denition of a standard to automatically accesstraceability information and documents o f each company belonging to the agri-food sector.

The Trace X ML Protocol mainly p rovides t hree outputs:

- Trace XML Protocol denition (a technical description of the protocol)- Trace Guidelines ( a guideline supporting the implementation of the protocol)

- Training m aterial




The Trace XML protocol is ad dressed to:

- companies b elonging to the agri-food sector and in particular to the suppliers oftools a nd services ( for example IT providers, software developers, consultantscompanies, training centres a nd s o o n): agri-food c ompanies r epresent the e ntitiesinterested in share the traceability information and the technology s uppliersrepresent the entities t hat enable the agri-food companies i n sharing theinformation;

- public officers (sanitary auditors, . ..): they represent the entities interested inquickly c ollect the traceability i nformation in case of rapid alert;

- policy makers: they r epresent the entities t hat could be interested in promote the

adoption of the Trace XML protocol and that could study a nd develop a newdirective for a minimum set of mandatory information;

- standardization institutes: they re present the entities t hat could be interested inimprove the existing standard considering the standardization of a set ofinformation related to the traceability.

The protocol could also r epresents a recommendation for the European C ommission.

By the economical point of view, the main e xploitable r esult is t he e xperience of the P2Ppartners i n supporting and training companies a nd technology p rovider in adopting theTRACE-XML protocol.

The TRACE Software i s a tool that supports co llection, archiving a nd management ofinformation and d ocuments r elated to the t raceability. In fact the T RACE-SW can b einstalled in each company ( if they a re well-structured by t he software architecture point ofview) or it could be installed in a service centre so that several companies ca n use it as a nInternet dedicated s ervice (ASP approach). Industrial Associations co uld p lay d irectly therole of service centres o r could support the constitution of new service centres (f or examplein collaboration with an Internet provider). TRACE-SW could also be customised by onecompany in order to manage i ts o wn s upply ch ain. Product Trace Browser


The TRACE Browser is an op en sou rce sof tware tool compliant with the TRACE-XMLprotocol. It is a n ICT tool to browse the traceability information of the companies: theTRACE-Browser accesses t raceability information co llected in c ompanies t hat haveadopted the TRACE-SW or that have tools with a new interface compliant with the TRACE-XML. The TRACE-Browser automatically go es t hrough the value chain co llectinginformation in o rder to trace the history o r to trace contaminated b atches. The open s ourcesoftware guarantees t he free adoption by each USER and the opportunity to develop morecomplex software tools t ailored to the USER needs a nd prole. The main functions o f the TRACE Browser are:

Navigation through node modules (using compiled interfaces).

Source editing, type-checking, and browsing.

Automated tracing function for selected items/objects.
