Philips Research will announce its new intelligent pill technology "iPill", targeted at assisting drug development and enabling new therapies for debilitating and life-threatening digestive tract disorders such as Crohn's disease, colitis and colon cancer.

Philips' smart pill is the same size as the camera pill, the iPill has a wireless transmitter, but it plays no tunes. Instead, it sends dispatches about the temperature and acidity of its surroundings to an outside receiver as it travels through the GI tract over the course of a day or two. The acidity, measured by pH, of the gut decreases as the pill gets further from the stomach and that allows researchers to pinpoint the place where the drug is needed.

The multivitamin-size "intelligent pill" also has a microprocessor in it, which is designed to release its cargo of medicine at the specific spot in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract where it will do the most good, sparing the rest of the body from unnecessary exposure to the drug.

iPill might make its commercial debut as a research tool for drug developers, at a cost of as much as $1,000 a pill. The cost could come down to about $10 if thousands of people were taking iPills every day.

Do lipstick sell well when the economic depression deepens? Google trends answers “Yes”. Estée Lauder Chairman Leonard Lauder reportedly coined the phrase “lipstick index” after observing sales surges during 9/11 downturns. Why? People reach for affordable luxuries to feel better. The New York Times notes that in the last few months, lipstick sales have shot up 40% . Even in Indian markets lipstick sales are growing steadily at 20 % & in the case of luxury brands that have a smaller base, extending even into the triple digits. “Women always want to look beautiful, and what’s the easiest thing to buy? Lipstick. A tube of lipstick for $14.50 as compared to a shirt for $70,” says Jennifer Barnett of Origins.

Kim Gu-Han’s Helios concept car is unusual to say the least. Resembling some sort of frill necked lizard, the electric off-road vehicle has the unique ability to spread its solar panel wings to soak up the sun’s energy. While in motion, the Helios is a sleek electric vehicle that is powered by solar energy, and when at rest it deploys a rather cool-looking fan that can absorb and store energy to power your house. Now that’s what we call inspired by nature

We’ve seen some interesting concept vehicles here at Inhabitat, but we have never fathomed one modeled after a lizard. The Helios was inspired by reptiles that spread out their skin to control their temperature. The vehicle’s expandable solar fan allows it to absorb solar energy over a large surface area while at rest. [inhabitat]

GreenWashBall - Wash Without Detergent.세제없이세탁하는친환경세탁볼

The GreenWashBall is a device that you toss into the washing machine to clean your dirty laundry in place of detergent. An innovative concept, but not the first of its kind - “laundry balls”like the GreenWashBall are abundant, including the Miracle II Ball, the Laundry Solution ball, and the Mystic Wonder Laundry Ball. They are supposedly popular in Europe and the laundry ball industry is hoping to gain popularity in the U.S. Completely cutting the use of detergent is enticing from both ecological and economic standpoints, but how exactly does the GreenWashBall work, and can it up to its claims?

Laundry balls seem to inspire skepticism. I speculate that this is for two reasons. One, they tend to be sold through direct marketing, like catalogs, and multi-level marketing schemes where sellers recruit buyers and other sellers — both mediums lend themselves to rackets. Two, the explanation of the technology involves some fuzzy chemistry involving everything from magnets to “far infrared rays.”

This company could not have picked a worse name for a product that Consumer Reports decreed ineffective and Wikipedia desribes as “pseudoscientific” and a “scam.” The GreenWashBall ($39.99) is filled with “antibacterial ceramics”that emit OH- ions, or hydroxides, and O2- ions, or dioxides, according to Michael Bitton of the GreenWashBall Team. The OH- ions have “strong sterilization capability” and the O2- ions have the “capability of decomposing organizing matters and deodorizing scents by being attached to oxidation reacting intermediates.” Both ions “destroy cell membranes of bacteria.”
