    WHAT A PAINT IS?

    Definition:-paint can be described as any

    fluid material that will spread over a solidsurface and dry or harden to an adherent,

    coherent, obscuring skin or film.

    Common constituents:-

    Paint body:-These are the main components of a paintconsist of White Lead, Titanium White etc.

    Extenders:-Materials added to the paint body toincrease the volume without unduly increasing the cost.

    Pigment:-The materials which imparts the paint itscolour. Natural pigments are obtained from animal, vegetable,

    & minerals

    Vehicle:-It is a mom-volatile fluid in which the solid bodymaterial is suspended and comprises.

    Function & use:-

    Paint is used to protect the exterior of

    a building (against moisture and

    oxidation) or to beautify its interior(decorative finish).

    Properties of paints:-

    1. Consistency:- Neither too thick nor too thinner.

    2. Spreading power:-It is the covering capacityof the paint measured in terms of square meters of

    area that can be covered by one liter of the paint

    material.

    3. Drying:-Time taken to be dry by the paint.

    4. Durability:-It is the time period during which thepaint coating maintains its decorative & protectivevalues.

    5. Finishing:-It is the smoothness of the paintedSURFACE

    1. Enamels:-

    Oil-based paints, Alkyd & other

    Resins:-These paints contains lead pigment

    or titanium white. These are non-toxic paints.Coverage--> liquid paint=16 sq m. Jelly

    paint=12 sq m.

    2. Water Paints and Distempers:-

    Emulsion paints:-Water thinned, easy to clean

    the bruses and remove splashes, higher

    resistance to moisture than ordinary paints

    Coverage--> liquid=14 sq m. Jelly=9 sq m.

    Acrylic or semi gloss emulsion:-Based on acrylic

    emulsion, they can be thinned with water.

    Coverage--> liquid=12-14 sq m. Jelly=7-9 sq m.

    Water Paints and Distempers:-

    Washable distemper:-Marginally cheaper

    than emulsion paint, but not as hard-wearing.

    Coverage=14 sq m. Matte finish.

    Cement or stone paint:-Portland

    cement+CaCl2+lime=water repellant fatty acid

    soap

    Coverage=12-14 sq m. matte finish

    3. Cold CURED Material:-

    Polyurethane (one pack):-Forms a hard

    surface which will stand up well to moisture

    and rough treatment.

    These are dried by cross-linking, induced by

    chemical agents.

    Coverage=12-16 sq. m. depending on brand.

    Varnish:-More or less transparent liquids

    having basically same components as paints.

    Allow the original surface to show.
