Indian Central Pollution Control Board direction

• Requirement to on-line measure COD, BOD, pH and TSS in all water outlets of Indian industries, CETPs, hazardous and biomedical waste incinerators

• On-line calibration required

• Collected on-line data have to be sent to CPCB remote server

• On-line water quality monitoring systems have to be in operation by 31 March 2015.

Central Pollution Control Board direction (2)

• 17 categories of industries were identified

• Other chemical parameters to be added on the basic set of COD, BOD, pH and TSS for the following categories:

Dye and dye intermediate: chromium 6+

Fertilizers: ammonia

Pesticides: chromium 6+ and arsenic

Pharmaceuticals: chromium 6+ and arsenic

Pulp and paper: Adsorbable Organic Halides (AOX).

Micromac ECO on-line analyzer:

• Batch sequential multiparametric

analysis of COD, BOD, pH and TSS

• To be combined with other

Micromac C on-line analyzers

tomeasure chemical compounds

• ZetaLOG data acquisition unit to

acquire data from Micromac ECO

and another Micromac C

• analog acquisition of water flow

data can be included.

• COD, BOD and TSS are indirectly measured

• Local calibration of COD, BOD, and TSS according to analytical methods are required to provide accurate data for the specific water matrix to be monitored

COD: .by standard dichromate + sulphuric acid colorimetric method

BOD: by 5 days digestion and O2 consumption measurement using DO electrode

TSS: by gravimetric method.

Micromac ECO: local calibrations required

Optional on-line self-cleaning filtration unit

• Suggested for any waste water outlet application

• Self-cleaning by compressed air, to be available on-site as standard

• Internal compressed air generator available on request

• Suggested filtration cut-off 100 microns is compatible with TSS measurements.

BOD5 direct correlation with tryptophan

• Tryptophan is an essential amino acid in human diet and is the main component of protein fluorescence.

• It is associated with microbial activity, i.e. from sewage & faecal contamination of wastewaters.

• Published data over the past decade has clearly demonstrated a strong correlation between Tryptophan-like fluorescence and BOD.

BOD indirect measurement by fluorimetric method

• Measurement done by the excitation at 280 nm of

Tryptophan-like UV fluorescence, measured at 340-360

nm, which correlates with both bacterial loading and BOD

• Internal calibration factor is used to convert the

Tryptophan-like fluorescence measured to the reported

BOD equivalent value in units of mg/L

• The use of fluorescence provides signal detection

sensitivity far superior to optical absorption methods,

while the real-time reporting of BOD equivalence enables

the measurement to be used for process control

• Featuring autocleaning and programmable calibration

check by tryptophan reference solution.

BOD trypthophan like fluorescence method shows better correlation with BOD5 than UV (SAC 254 nm) direct reading(*)

TSS example of data correlation with turbidity for DRY and WET weather

• Local calibration of COD, BOD, and TSS according to analytical methods are required to provide accurate data

• Built-in autocalibration checks ensure long term measurement stability

• 0-5 V or 4-20 mA + digital I/O as standard outputs provide measurement data to the local SCADA

• ZetaLOG integration can provide data to CPCB server and to ZetaCED remote data visualization and validation system, accessible on the Web.

Micromac ECO: operativity and data output

Micromac C MP2 Arsenic and Chromium6+ analyzer:

• Power supply: 12 Vdc, 20 W

• Multiparanetric sequential batch

analysis

• Low reagents consumption

• Around one hour measurement

time (two As sequential

strippings)

• Full integration compatibility with

Zetalog+ZetaCED

Micromac C Arsenic measurement method

• Based on standard Mo-blue spectrophotometric method with preliminary repeated Arsine gas stripping.

• LFA technology ensures

reliability and high circuit

cleaning

Available ranges from 0-20 ppb

Micromac C Arsenic (low level) test:

Micromac C on-line analyzers: other measurement methods required by CPCB

The automated procedure for the determination of hexavalent chromium in water depends upon the reaction of diphenylcarbazide with hexavalent chromium in an acid medium, to produce a reddish purple colour which can be measured at 520/550 nm.

Chromium6+

Ammonia In this automated method, the ammonia ions present in the sample react with salicilate in an alkaline medium pH 12, while nitroprusside acts as a catalyst. The blue color is measured at 660-630 nm.

Micromac COD

Micromac COD automates the standard bichromate + sulphuric acid method, applied in any laboratory worldwide as COD reference method.

In 2011 the analyzer was successfully tested by Chinese

EPA as equivalent method

ZetaLOG: a powerful remote data communication device

• Combined GSM / SMS and GPRS technology

• data delivery by SMS to plant operators to notify threshol alarms

• ftp data delivery to CPCB server

• direct GPRS data communication to ZetaCED Web server

• direct control of the on-line analyzer by GPRS remote connection allows easy diagnostic.

Management advance using a Web based data centre

• Station accessibility from any type of Internet connecting tool, including palm devices and last generation mobile phones

• Remote data validation by operators located in different places

• Data stored in relational data-base installed in a remote server located in a Service Provider facility or directly in CPCB’s head quarter

• No specific application needed to be run in any computer's Client

• Remote maintenance and update facility.
