I’m often asked, “Why do you do what you do?”

The simplest answer is: we use the lessons of the past to make the future a kinder, safer, more just world for everyone.

Through the lens of the Holocaust, we educate visitors about the impact of unchecked hate and bigotry and about the power each of us has to make a positive difference.

We want those whose lives we touch to see themselves as change agents and to stand up when they see social injustices occur. That goal is more important today than at any time in our Museum’s history.

The recent neo-Nazi march in Charlottesville and similar high-profile incidents are attacks on the values we hold dear. In the face of such public hate, we must act, taking the same courageous stand we ask of others.

The Holocaust, its survivors and their descendants are at the heart of what we do. When survivors call the rise in public hate incidents chilling, we cannot remain silent.

Visitors tell us we are making a difference in their lives. Students report that tours give them a new perspective to view themselves as change agents and to recognize how important it is to stand up when they see social injustices occur.

One young man called his tour life-changing, confiding that what he learned gave him the knowledge – and courage – to disavow his family’s racist, anti-Semitic beliefs.

A woman from Trenton, Illinois, said, “I brought my grandchildren in hopes that we will learn from the sins of our past and hope for a better future for all.”

A guest from Florida said our site “exceeds” Holocaust museums she has visited in Europe – high praise, indeed.

One step we are taking is updating, refreshing and expanding our space. It’s a project that will keep our Museum, which opened in 1995, relevant, relatable and a valued community resource for years to come. You’ll be learning more about those plans as they develop.

More than 200 volunteers serve as docents, committee members and in other roles to keep our doors open and our Museum free of charge. We thank them–and all our donors – for their support. They, and the hundreds of teachers who bring thousands of students to our space, understand that supporting the Holocaust Museum & Learning Center is a powerful way to fight hatred, evil and injustice.

More than 70 years after the Holocaust, our work is more relevant than ever.

Jewish Federation of St. Louis has announced the start of a three-phase plan to renovate the Kopolow Building at 12 Millstone Campus Drive. Initial funding has generously been provided by a lead gift from Mrs. Gloria Feldman and additional significant funding from the Staenberg Family Foundation. Ken and Nancy Kranzberg also donated to the project. Renovations for Phase 1 include improving security, access and infrastructure for the 35 year-old facility.

• New elevator that extends through all three floors of the building re-located closer to the Holocaust Museum & Learning Center

• ADA compliant bathrooms on the main and upper floors

• Addition of a family restroom on the main floor

• Front access redesign to improve security and accessibility

• Modernized communal meeting space

Jewish Federation of St. Louis is indebted to those who founded the building in 1981, led by the Kopolow family. All donors will be honored in the renovation.

The renovation project began in September of 2017. Through these improvements, the Jewish Federation of St. Louis hopes to create a more welcoming and community-friendly building that promotes engagement within the Jewish community.

Additionally, funds from Mrs. Feldman will allow the HMLC to hire a designer to complete plans to renovate the 22-year-old Holocaust Museum. The changes will allow the HMLC to remain a relevant educational resource for more than 30,000 visitors each year.

Untold Sacrifices: The St. Louis Jewish Community in the Great WarOn Sunday, November 5, the new exhibit “Untold Sacrifices: The St. Louis Jewish Community in the Great War” opened at the J’s Fitness & Wellness Building. Drawn primarily from materials in the St. Louis Jewish Community Archives and the Holocaust Museum’s Archives, the exhibit honors those in the St. Louis Jewish community who fought in the war or served on the home front during the war. The exhibit is in honor of the 100th anniversary of the US entry into the “war to end all wars.”

Dr. Petra DeWitt of Missouri University of Science & Technology gave the opening lecture titled, “’Prejudice is a Worse Foe to American Democracy than any Kaiser, The Jewish Experience in St. Louis during World War I.” Dr. DeWitt is a specialist in migration and ethnic history, with numerous articles that deal with those topics and with WWI. Her book, Degrees of Allegiance: Harassment and Loyalty in Missouri’s German-American Community in World War I (Ohio University Press, 2012), winner of the State Historical Society of Missouri’s History Book Award in 2012, provides a new viewpoint on the German-Americans in the state during the Great War and the war’s influence on their lives and culture.

The exhibit is open through December 31, 2017.

Arthur and Marilyn* Gale Family Lecture Series Presents “Why? Explaining the Holocaust.”

Museum Outreach ProjectInspired by the Kopolow Building renovations, the HMLC is developing a pilot program in which docents, serving as Museum ambassadors, will visit school classrooms and other organizations. Using images (and perhaps artifacts) from the HMLC, docents will address topics including the importance of not being a bystander, the concept that each individual can make a difference and other issues relevant to the world today. By presenting some elements of the history and lessons of the Holocaust, this program will be useful in preparing a class for a Museum visit, or for an effective classroom experience. Stay tuned for more information about this developing project.

As witnesses to the Holocaust near the ends of their lives, it becomes even more important to seek a coherent explanation of why the Holocaust occurred and to educate a new generation about the horrors inflicted by the Nazi regime.

World-renowned Holocaust historian Professor Peter Hayes brings a wealth of scholarly research and experience to bear on conventional, popular views of this history, challenging some of the most prominent interpretations. He argues that there is no single theory that “explains” the Holocaust; the convergence of multiple forces at a particular moment in time led to this catastrophe.

Peter Hayes holds degrees from Bowdoin, Oxford and Yale. From 1980 to 2016, he was the Professor of History and German and from 2000 to 2016, the Theodore Zev Weiss Holocaust Educational Foundation Professor at Northwestern University.

Publications include his acclaimed study of IG Farben, Industry and Ideology, and his monumental history of the Nazi economy, The Wages of Destruction. He currently chairs the Academic Committee at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. In 2017, Prof. Hayes published Why? Explaining the Holocaust.

Thursday, December 14, 2017 | 7:00 pm | Reception to follow (dietary laws observed)

St. Louis County Library, 1640 S. Lindbergh Blvd. St. Louis, MO 63131

The presentation is open to the public and free of charge. Seating is limited, reservations required. For further information, or to RSVP, please contact Andrew Goldfeder at 314-442-3711 or [email protected].

This program is generously sponsored by Doctor Arthur Gale and Family in loving memory of Marilyn Gale. The HMLC would also like to thank the St. Louis Public Library Foundation and the St. Louis Jewish Book Festival for their support.

Remembering Holocaust Survivor Jerry KoenigHolocaust survivor and speaker Jerry Koenig passed away on June 11, 2017. At age 11, Jerry spent almost two years of his life hiding with 10 other people in a small bunker that had been dug underneath a barn in the Polish countryside. Jerry’s family managed to stay together throughout the years of the Holocaust, a time when whole Jewish communities were destroyed.

Jerry shared his extraordinary testimony with many adult audiences at the HMLC and throughout the community. His powerful story impressed many listeners, including a young woman named Anna Reynolds, who wrote him a beautiful thank you letter. Here are excerpts from her correspondence.

Dear Mr. Koenig,

You probably don’t remember me, but my name is Anna Reynolds and I’m a student at Lindenwood University. On Tuesday, February 21st, you did us the great honor of speaking about your experience as a Holocaust survivor. I’m writing to thank you sir, because you have truly and irreversibly changed my life.

I am not Jewish. But I cannot imagine what it must have felt like for you and your family to be treated as sub-human because of your faith.

As my roommate and I were leaving after you spoke…she asked you for a piece of life advice. You thought for a moment, then said “Life is worth living. Never give up.” Your words will resonate in my heart forever.

The week before you came to speak to us, I was diagnosed with a heart condition, at 20 years old. It scared me a lot. But then you spoke…You gave me hope and determination that night Mr. Koenig. You truly are my hero.

Thank you for taking the time to share your story… It couldn’t have been easy for you, but I’m grateful for the impact you had on my life. I promise to never let your story die. I will continue to tell it in honor of those who did not survive. Thank you, and with much love.

Anna’s words are indeed a fitting tribute to the life of Jerry Koenig. He was our hero too.

Anna’s letter demonstrates the impact Jerry Koenig’s words had on countless listeners. He will be greatly missed. May his memory be a blessing.

Survivors’ Testimony With the passing of time, it is especially valuable to hear a survivor or witness speak in their own words. Several recent programs at the HMLC have focused on firsthand testimony.

On August 28, the St. Louis Survivors and Descendants group heard the testimony of WWII veteran Edward “Fitz” Fitzgerald. At the age of 16, Fitz lied about his age and enlisted in the army. After the end of the war, he was assigned to serve as a guard during the Nuremberg trials. Later, he was a guard at Spandau Prison, which held Nazi perpetrators, including Rudolf Hess and Albert Speer.

Gertraud Howald was the Barbara Katz Docent Enrichment Speaker at the September docent meeting. Ms. Howald, a Catholic child growing up in Vienna, described the changes that took place at the time of the Anschluss, the annexing of Austria in 1938. She also described the terrible conditions she and her mother experienced during the war years.

On Friday, November 3, Danish survivor Steen Metz spoke at Sabbath services at Temple Emanuel. Metz described his family’s deportation to Theresienstadt, his father’s death, and his mother’s and his own struggle to survive the horrors of the camp. This program was sponsored by Carin and Erik Thyssen, the HMLC and Temple Emanuel.

All of the speakers stressed the importance of telling their stories to the next generation.

Survivors, veterans and descendants: Please consider donating memorabilia relating to the Holocaust or pre-WWII life, documents, immigration papers or artifacts brought back from the war. Those crumbling papers and military souvenirs, so important to a parent or grandparent, would be a welcome addition to the HMLC’s archival collection. Documents and artifacts would be respectfully preserved.

Some limitations based on size and volume. Contact Dan Reich at 314-442-3714 or [email protected] for further information.
