Tejana Music

• Tejano/tejana: Texan• A style of music that reflects the combination of 3

different cultural groups• European, Mexican and American• Both the lyrics and music incorporate characteristics of each

group.• The music is a blend of

• rock & roll , country, R & B, and jazz• 2 important instruments

• Accordion• Bajo sexto- a big 12-string Spanish guitar

• “El conjunto tejano”: Tejana music group• There are several of these in San Antonio• Selena was a famous Tejana singer.

San Antonio

• Located on the San Antonio River & San Pedro Creek in south-central Texas.

• The land was formerly inhabited by Native Americans of the Coalhuiltec & Papaya tribes.

• The 1st permanent European settlement was established in 1718 by the Spanish.

• San Antonio was incorporated as a city in 1809.

Paseo del rio

• “Riverwalk”- a walkway that borders the San Antonio River

• A popular tourist attraction made up of shops, restaurants and an open-air amphitheater

The Alamo

• Formerly a Spanish mission, founded in 1718• Converted into a fortress in 1793• In 1836, Davy Crockett led a group of Texans in

a rebellion against the Mexican rule during the Texan Revolution.

• Santa Ana led the Mexican army.• The battle took place at the Alamo.• They were under siege for 13 days.• Susanna Dickinson was an Alamo Survivor.

Mariachi• Mariachi bands stroll around consisting of a

standard group of instruments:– 2 violins– 2 trumpets– A guitarron- large bass guitar– 2 five string guitars

• The word “mariachi” comes from the French word for “marriage”.

• This is because Mariachi music originated at weddings in a French settlement in Jalisco, Mexico.

Charreada

• Mexican-style rodeo

• Los charros: contestants in the rodeo who display equestrian skills developed from ranch work

• Goes on during Fiesta Week (in April) in San Antonio
