continued from Page 1While at Hobart Wilkin

said he was doing body work"on the side," eventuallydeciding to give starting hisown business "a whirl."Wilkin said he rented a

shop in Fairview before hav-ing the current building builtin 1974. The location at 2955US Highway 50 inAllensburg is where he hasbeen ever since.Wilkin is the only one

working at the shop but hesaid if he ever needs helpwith something he has gotsome people to call. As far asservices, Wilkin said he cando "everything that has to bedone to restore a vehicle" thathas been damaged to its orig-inal condition, everythingfrom frames to body work topainting.Upon walking through the

shop, past the old 1950s-something coupe up on arack, the cement floor beginsto take on a Jackson Pollockfeel as the paint droppingsbecome more dense leadingto the paint booth located atthe back of the shop. Here iswhere Wilkin performs hiscustom painting, all gearedup in a suit and mask andclosed in the booth with bigventilation vents on the backwall. As to custom painting,

Wilkin said he has painted

several race cars in andaround the area. Wilkin saidwhen he started the businessthe custom painting was a biginterest for him and heexplained the intricacies ofthe custom paints, the aspectsof a particular base coat andthe various overlays that cre-ate the "depth" of the verylarge variety of custom paintsavailable, as evidenced by themany sample books laidacross his desk.Wilkin built and painted

his own race car as well. It ispainted black and bears asheriff's star and within thatstar it reads, "Sheriffs forKids Racing." The car alsohas the blue and red lights onthe roof."This car has been from

New Jersey to Las Vegas,"Wilkin said as he spoke of themany places he has traveledwith the car for variousevents and races. It is some-thing that has made the localrounds too as Wilkin said hetakes the car to D.A.R.E.events and to elementary, high, and vocational schoolsin the surrounding counties.Wilkin is married to

Shirley (Hook) and has twodaughters, Tanya Hendrixand Kelly Wilkin. He wasborn in Hillsboro and raisedin Allensburg.Rick's Body Shop is locat-

ed at 2955 U.S. Route 50 inAllensburg and can bereached by calling 937-364-2371.

DEAR ABBY: This ismy first-ever Dear Abby let-ter. I am disgusted by thelack of manners shown bycellphone users. I run anantique store in a smalltourist town. I cannot tellyou how many "insulted andincensed" customers I haveasked to please leave myshop because they insistedon talking on their cell-phones.I have also asked people

in church to carry on theirconversations outside. Aman at my daughter's highschool graduation got a calland proceeded to talk on andon until I finally asked himto leave. This has happenedin restaurants, movies --even a Broadway play. It's inconceivable to me

that cellphone users areunwilling or unable tounderstand that their VIPconversations are an intru-sion and rude to those whoare forced to listen.-- PEEVED IN NANTUCK-

ET, MASS.

DEAR PEEVED: It isdifficult to teach considera-tion for others to people whohave none. However, allowme to clue you in to whatsome communities are doingto curb the intrusion of cell-phones: They have postedsigns in restaurants, theatersand shops that read,"Cellphone-Free Zone. Theowner of this establishmentthanks you for not usingyour cellphone on the prem-ises. If you must make orreceive a call, please do sooutside." That way, cus-tomers are warned in a waythat's not confrontational.

DEAR ABBY:What isproper when you're talkingwith someone and younotice the person has foodstuck in his or her teeth? What if the person is part ofa group and someone youdon't know very well?-- TOOTHFUL IN FLORIDA

DEAR TOOTHFUL:Do unto others as you wouldhave them do unto you. Ifyou were in the other per-son's place, wouldn't YOUwant to be told?Even if you know the

person only casually, try toease him or her away fromthe group and say, "I knowwe don't know each othervery well, but I thought youshould know you havesomething in your teeth. It'shappened to me, and Ithought you'd like to know, too."Consider it a charitable

act. The person will: First,be embarrassed; second, begrateful.

DEAR ABBY: I am asupervisor in a consultingfirm. I have recently beenassigned an employee whodoes not dress appropriatelyfor the workplace. The fash-ion choices she makes areunprofessional and too casu-al for our company. Shewears no makeup, nor doesshe consistently care for herhair.Abby, this young woman

meets the public. Her job isto consult with clients andadvise them about investingtheir money. Her appearancehas been commented on byclients and colleagues alikeand does not lend confi-dence in her skills and abili-ties. How do I counsel herwithout hurting her feelings?

-- APPREHENSIVE INCONSERVATIVE-VILLE

DEAR APPREHEN-SIVE: Your job as supervi-sor includes counseling youremployees with regard toanything that affects job per-formance and the image ofthe company. If the companydoesn't have a dress code,it's time to establish one. Then schedule a private

meeting with this employeeand discuss what you expectfrom her. Offer her a fewpictures of appropriate busi-ness attire and stylish, easilymanageable hairstyles.Stress that her appearance isan important part of theimage of the company andyour clients' perception ofher skills and talents.By emphasizing that the

dress code will be of valueto her, you'll put yourself inthe position of doing her afavor rather than being criti-cal.

Regular readers of this columnalready know about our plannedPhiladelphia Garden Tour, and mostpeople have heard of the tour center-piece, Longwood Gardens. Fewer gar-deners know about the nearbyWinterthur Museum and Gardens inWilmington, Delaware. LikeLongwood, this fantastic estate wasbuilt by the DuPont family a centuryago, but Winterthur couldn’t be moredifferent from Longwood in its gardenstyle. We first visited Winterthur to see its

world-renowned collection of periodfurniture. The DuPont mansion is 275rooms, each one uniquely decoratedand filled with an amazing array ofantique furnishings from around theworld. More recently, the Campbellfamily’s collection of historic souptureens was moved to Winterthur fromthe Campbell’s Soup headquarters inCamden, New Jersey. This exhibit is atour de force of craftsmanship by mas-

ter ceramicists. potters and silversmithsfrom around the world. But it was the spectacular gardens at

Winterthur that impressed us the most.Longwood Gardens is very formal andsymmetrical, but Winterthur was land-scaped to highlight the rolling country-side and the effect is subtle but dramat-ic. Plants are arranged to appear as ifthey grew spontaneously, planted inlarge drifts and grouped with otherplants that harmonize in color andform. Paths are curving rather thanstraight, following the contours of theland, passing around trees, drawingwalkers into the 60-acre garden sur-rounded by 1,000 acres of farmland. The most memorable part of

Winterthur is the Enchanted Woods, sheltered by a grove of huge oaks.Designed to entertain children, this 3-acre garden features a cutaway “FaerieCottage” made of stone, with athatched roof and miniature furniture, and a huge bird’s nest made of sticks

and vines. An old gate plays a tune asyou open it, and huge toadstools emitclouds of vapor for an eerie effect. You are invited to tour with us this

September, on our Philadelphia GardenTour with Croswell Tours. We’re visit-ing Longwood Gardens, Winterthur, and the Wyeth museum and gardens atBrandywine. We’ll depart GoodSeedFarm on Sept. 13 for four days andthree nights of terrific food, great gar-dens and museums. Get the details onthe “Bus Tours” page our website atthis link, or you can call or e-mail formore information: http://www.good-seedfarm.com/public/index.cfm?fuse-action=articles.list&ArticleInstanceID=938.Editor’s Note: Steve Boehme is the

EAT BETTER, AGE BETTERWhile seniors generally con-sume fewer calories becauseof their slowing metabolisms, they must be sure to get suffi-cient calories to sustain theirhealth. Weight loss at anadvanced age for whateverreason may lead to malnutri-tion and/or worsening ofexisting health conditions. With this in mind, seniorsshould make sure their teeth(or dentures) and gums are ingood working order. If it hurtsto chew, people eat less.Healthy teeth and properly fit-ting dentures ensure thatseniors can avail themselves ofall the nutrition in healthymeals. The National Institutesof Health is funding researchto determine how oral healthmay affect memory. It isthought that a healthy diet maybe linked with less cognitivedecline among seniors.

Our entire staff at CLARKFAMILY DENTISTRY encour-ages your questions aboutcomprehensive dental care. Wesupply superior oral health carefor the entire family. Foranswers to your oral healthissue questions we invite you tocall our office at 937.393.3494.

Your health is our firstpriority. We are pleased toprovide you with state-of-the-artdental care at 624 S. HighStreet, Hillsboro.

Our goal is to make each visitto our office a comfortable andpositive experience. Newpatients are always welcome.

P.S. Oral health should beviewed in an overall contextbecause it is an importantcomponent that contributes tothe health of other bodily sys-tems and organs.

PUBLIC RELEASEBright Local School District today announced its 2012-2013 program year policy for free and reduced priced mealsfor students unable to pay the full price of meals or milk served under the National School Lunch and SchoolBreakfast, After School Care Snack or Special Milk Program. Each school office and the central office has a copy ofthe policy, which may be reviewed by any interested party. The Federal Income Eligibility Guidelines will be used for determining eligibility. Children from families whose annu-al income is at or below the Federal Guidelines are eligible for free and reduced price meals or free milk if the schoolparticipates in the Special Milk Program.Application forms are being distributed to all homes in a letter to parents or guardians. To apply for free andreduced-price benefits, households should fill out the application and return it to the school. Additional copies areavailable at the principal's office in each school. A complete application is required. Households which currentlyreceive Special Nutrition Assistance Program Benefits (SNAP, formally known as food stamps) or Ohio Works First(OWF) funds for a child must provide the child's name, the SNAP or OWF case number and signature of an adulthousehold member on the application. Households which do not receive SNAP or OWF funds must provide thenames of all household members, the last four digits of the Social Security Number of the adult signing the appli-cation or state "none" if the adult does not have a Social Security Number, the amount and source of income receivedby each household member, (state the monthly income) and the signature of an adult household member. If any ofthis information is missing, the school cannot process the application.FREE HEALTH CARE: Families with children eligible for school meals may be eligible for FREE health care coveragethrough Medicaid and/or Ohio's Healthy Start & Healthy Families programs. These programs include coverage fordoctor visits, immunizations, physicals, prescriptions, dental, vision, mental health, substance abuse and more. Please call 1-800-324-8680 for more information or to request an application. Applications are being made in connection with the receiptof federal funds. Schools or other officials may check the information on the application at any time during theschool year. Deliberate misrepresentation of information may subject the applicant to prosecution under applicablestate and federal laws.Households will be notified of the approval or denial of benefits.Foster children are categorically eligible for free meal benefits regardless of the household's income. If a family hasfoster children living with them and wishes to apply for such meals or milk for them, contact the school for moreinformation.Under the provision of the policy, the building principal will review applications and determine eligibility. If a parentor guardian disagrees with the decision on the application or the result of verification, the decision may be dis-cussed with the determining official on an informal basis. CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY: Shani Davis, 30; Debi Mazar, 48; John Slattery, 50; Dawnn Lewis, 51.HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Decide what you have to do to ben-efit the most financially, and set your priorities so you can reach your goals. There is no room for laziness; put your paperwork in order and take care of pending matters that are slowing you down. Focus on maximizing your potential and eliminating your weaknesses. Your numbers are 5, 12, 21, 24, 35, 38, 41.ARIES (March 21-April 19): Pressure due to personal responsibilities will grow. Push for what you want in a modest manner and you will overcome adversity. Expect to encounter ups and downs, but believe in your abilities and strive to be victorious in your pursuits. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Work alongside family, friends or neighbors to reach your goals. Stability and consistency will be required and should be the determining factor when faced with choices regarding who you work with and what you strive to accomplish. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Someone with experience will offer a solution that eliminates a problem. Call in favors and substantiate what is required to reach your goals. Your insight and unique way of presenting and promoting will pay off. Sincerity will be a determining factor. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Emotions will mount if you let your concerns fester. Speak up, and resolve issues that are sti-fling your ability to make the necessary moves to improve your life. An unusual lifestyle will fit your current situation and add to your creative ability. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Do whatever it takes to improve your popularity or fix problems you feel obliged to resolve. You will get back what you put out and more. A move or changes at home will bring you greater happiness and success. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Talk to individuals who have the potential to help you reach your goals. Stick to simple solutions, and walk away from an unrealis-tic promise. Love is in the stars, but differences of opinion or background are likely to cause a setback. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Don't let your emotions interfere with your professional progress. Do what you can to show off your skills and increase your chance to advance. Educational pursuits will bring high returns in the workforce. Do your best and excel. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Reconnect with people you miss or want to form an alliance with. Listen to the concerns of others, but don't take sides or meddle. Put more effort into establish-ing your feelings and intentions regarding someone you love. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Do what's right, even if it takes a little time. The changes you make will enhance your personal and financial life. Someone from your past can make a difference in your future. Set up a meeting with an old col-league, peer or boss. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Hold on to what you have. Refuse to let anyone put you in

a position that limits what you can do. Added responsibilities will have an adverse affect on a personal relationship. Listen, but don't make promises. Protect your emotional wellness. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): The past can positively influence the future if you utilize every-thing you've learned to come up with a way to move forward financially, legally or personally. A change regarding a negative

relationship will enable you to improve your life. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Let your intuition guide you when it comes to affairs of the heart or important domestic decisions. A positive change at work can also enhance your per-sonal life if those influenced by your choices have a say. BIRTHDAY BABY: You are strong, independent and curious. You strive to be your best.

Homework time can be a difficultmoment for children as well as par-ents. Between making dinner, daily chores, andchildren who grumble or who refuse outright todo their homework, it is not easy to stay Zen!Here are seven tricks to help you:

1. Establish a routine at the beginning of theschool year and stick to it. Homework shouldbe done at the same time each day, in the sameplace (a quiet, well-lit room), and for about thesame amount of time.

2. Ban all forms of distraction. No television, music, or aimless wandering about by otherfamily members where children are doing theirhomework. Put a barking dog outside!

3. Let your children empty their own schoolbagsand organize their school material. Give themtime to look at their teachers’ homework sched-ules and ask them what they have to do.

4. Stay present and available, without succumb-ing to the temptation of doing the homeworkyourself. If your children need help, show themthat you are paying attention and are willing togive advice.

5. Let your children read instructions out loud. This will enable them to stay concentrated ontheir homework and you will also know how faralong they are.

6. If they get stuck, ask them to explain to you intheir own words what they understand. Thentell them what you understand. By workingtogether you may succeed in solving the prob-lem.

7. Always try and make homework time a pos-itive experience, punctuated with encourage-ment for every effort. Your children will be allthe more motivated!
