Explain how one person Jury – 8 is able to change the perception of all other Jury? Discuss his
leadership style?
QUESTION - 4
J8 comes along with the others with only one driving thought – that the accused is entitled to a fair evaluation of facts, and that the judge’s order that they must arrive at the verdict with no reasonable doubt in any of their minds.
The jury is a mixed jury from diverse backgrounds and bring their own perceptions, biases and personal agendas to the table.
J8 encourages all the individuals to share their reasons for their vote and listens to them attentively. As every member discusses the reasons for his/her vote, this is debated, sometimes with much heat sometimes casually, and some other times, it touches a raw nerve in some of the members. J8 and some other emotionally mature people help tone down or up the intensity and pace of debate.
![Page 20: 12 Angry Men1](https://reader033.vdocuments.mx/reader033/viewer/2022061303/54fa1bdf4a79590b398b4b84/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
J8 goes beyond passive thinking to actually demonstrate the experience to verify that the events as mentioned by the witnesses can really happen the way they expressed it. This helps all the jury members be a witness to how the episode may have occurred.
J8 is helped by the diversity of the group, which brings different perspectives. A case in point is J5, who brings a totally different perspective because of his street life, on how the son would need to hold the knife to be able to kill the father the way he was killed. This was a point of view that nobody else in the group could ever have thought given their backgrounds. This point instills a sizeable doubt in the minds of each of the jury members.
To conclude, his transformational leadership capabilities, aided by the leadership capabilities of J1 (who helps in keeping the group focused) and J4(who assesses all the facts logically and neutrally, keeps calm in the face of heated animosity, and demands respect for all the members of the jury) help the jury members to perceive that there is reasonable ground for doubt in their individual decisions, to transcend their own agenda, biases and prejudices, and to share and bring their collective wisdom to analyze the events of the night based on facts and reality. This leads to the jury reaching a unanimous verdict of “Not Guilty”
