Dear Friends of Catholic Charities,

Due to declining economic conditions, many families in our community are struggling to make ends meet. Families are being evicted from their homes, having their power turned off, and skipping meals because money is scarce. More and more families are turning to local agencies such as Catholic Charities for a hand up so they can get back on their feet.

This year Catholic Charities Lake City Regional Office is holding a Virtual Fundraising Gala event to raise money so that we may assist as many families in need as possible. As you can see, there is an invitation and there will be an opportunity to participate with a donation. However, there is no party. Funds that would have gone to a caterer, florist and band, will instead be used to build hope and make dreams come true for the families in our community.

We sincerely hope that you will participate by making a generous donation, with the knowledge that 100% of your contribution will go directly to programs for the fami-lies served by Catholic Charities Lake City Regional Office. Your generous gift to our community is 100% tax deductible. The need for rental assistance, mortgage assistance, utility assistance and food in our community has never been more compelling.

Thurs., Dec. 9, the Lake City Medical Cen-ter Auxiliary celebrated the season at their Annual Brunch and Business Meeting held in the meeting room at H2U. The program began with brunch and moved quickly to one of the Auxiliary’s fa-

vorite traditions: sharing with area charities. Josh Snellgrove, director of Marketing at Lake City Medical Center, served as the Auxiliary’s

Five, Four, Three, Two, One. Happy New Year! It’s almost time to make our New Year’s Resolutions again. I know the typi-cal recommendation of most dietitians, in regards to weight loss, is that it is not a diet, but a “lifestyle change.” Diet is defi ned as “a controlled intake of food and drink de-signed for weight loss, for health or religious reasons, or to control or improve a medical condition.” If you don’t control what you eat, or “diet,” no matter how much you exercise, you are going to struggle to lose weight. What is the best advice I can give for the New Year? Ask yourself this one question. What did you do to put the weight on? What is the number one thing that triggered the weight gain? If you can honestly answer this question, usually you’ll fi nd what you need to take the weight off. For example, maybe you have a sweet tooth and love ice cream every night or grab a couple of cook-

ies when you pass through the kitchen on the way to bed. If you estimate either snack at approximately 150 calories, cutting that one habit alone, you could lose, on average fi fteen pounds in one year. And if you are still drinking regular soda, sweet ice tea or other high calorie beverages. Stop. You don’t want to drink your calories. You can have 30 grapes or 1 cup of grape juice for the same calories. Is it really a choice? Maybe your downfall is portion control. Make that your one focus. Use a divided plate, with the largest section being for the non-starchy vegetables like salads and steamed vegetables and cut your starches and meat down considerably. Don’t go back for seconds.
