9.00 Welcome Introduction to TheStadiumBusiness Design & Development Summit 2012

• Ian Nuttall, Founder, TheStadiumBusiness / Xperiology, UK

Your moderator for TheStadiumBusiness Design & Development Summit:

• Andrew Williams, Founder, Align2, UK

9.15 Keynote addressPlanning and realisation of stadiums for major sports eventsWhat are the main challenges in stadium construction and program management? And how best do we overcome them? Addressing the importance of high quality site operation and coordination between all stakeholders is essential to ensure project schedules are realistic and adhered to. And, of course, frequent monitoring and response to programme changes is vital. Our expert opening speaker is:

• Charles R. Botta, CEO, Botta Management Group AG, Switzerland

9.45 Session 1: New Construction ExperiencesOur opening session delves into the construction experiences of major new sports facility projects. We sample recently finished projects and explore what happened, the challenges that were unforeseen and the lessons learnt.

9.45 The Revitalization of BC Place, VancouverIn 2007 the British Columbia Pavilion Corporation (PavCo), a provincial government agency, embarked on a journey of renewal for an ageing stadium. The initial project brief was a simple request for material replacement of the existing air supported roof and improvements to public areas prior to the Olympics. But, rather than simply replacing the roof, the project emerged and evolved into a more holistic – and ambitious – project, to embrace new business opportunities including a Major League Soccer franchise for Vancouver with a unique soccer-specific configuration, and to transform BC Place into an incredible, world-class multipurpose facility.

TUESDAY 13 NOVEMBERTUESDAY 13 NOVEMBER

10.15 Lessons from PGE Arena, PolandOne of the most beautiful stadiums of this year’s EURO2012 tournament, PGE Arena (originally called Baltic Arena), is now the largest stadium in Poland’s Ekstraklasa top football league. Built at a cost of €185m, this 46,000 capacity stadium incorporates many innovative design features. Construction started in 2008 and was completed in mid-2011 – sharing his project diary is the stadium’s lead designer:

• Lukas Hampl, Associated Partner, RKW Rhode Kellermann Wawrowsky, Germany

10.45 Coffee break

11.15 Session 2: Form Follows Function - Fact or Fiction? The so-called ‘F-factor’ challenge is a dominant theme of sports venue construction. In our brand-driven world, isn’t design more important than ever? But at what cost? The days of bare concrete structures and endless standardised seating have given way to multiple customer segments, embedded sponsorship and higher quality finishes and materials. Where do we spend the money? And where we can hold back? Rising to the eternal debate are:

11.15 Perfect Cents: Investing in DesignHistorically seating capacity was the driving force behind stadium design. More seats meant more revenue meant a bigger building. But today’s trend towards boutique service, segmented customer experiences and embedded sponsor branding often creates a situation where ‘less is more’. Investing in design is the new economic reality.

• David Manica, Principal, MANICA Architecture, USA

11.40 Better By Design: Applying Thematic and Operational Design in VenuesTelstraClear Pacific Events Centre is an award-winning project which combines a 3,000 seat arena and a 700 seat theatre in one iconic structure. The facility opened on time and within budget in April 2005 and is one of New Zealand’s venue success stories. Now, resource consents and business plans for stage 2 (“Wero”) are in place for what will be a project of international significance. Our speaker – who ‘spearheaded’ the concept and development of the Centre from a greenfield site 10 years ago – will explore how applying thematic and operational design can not only make venues more functional; but, crucially, enhance their commercial viability.

• Richard Jeffery, CEO, Telstra Clear Pacific Events Centre, New Zealand

12.05 Building lessons from the AEG Facilities playbookAs one of the world’s largest sports and entertainment facility operators, AEG has unique insights into operating buildings, from the inside out. Balancing the diverse demands of all venue stakeholders (owners, operators, teams, sponsors, VIPs and fans), the company has established new guidelines on what works and what doesn’t when it comes to designing, building and fitting-out new facilities. Drawing on recent case studies – including the opening of Ülker Arena in Istanbul and BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston – our speaker will share some vital insights to consider, before pouring any concrete!

• Raj Saha, Regional Director of Operations, AEG Facilities, Europe

12.30 Guest Speaker2018 FIFA World Cup, development of Russia host cities’ infrastructure, problems and prospectsPreparation for the FIFA World Cup™ 2018 requires reconstruction of the transport and hotel infrastructure, improvement of the security system, and the use of international experience – along with 12 stadium projects in the 11 host cities.

• Natalia Kochetova, Russian Association for Sports Facilities (RASF), Russian Federation

TUESDAY 13 NOVEMBERTUESDAY 13 NOVEMBER

14.30 Session 3: Innovations ShowcaseThe construction and delivery of stadiums, arenas and sports facilities increasingly relies on technological and service innovation to ensure on-time and under budget delivery. This session features a selection of the latest product and service innovations for the stadium sector – all delivered in a proven quick-fire presentation format. Based on the popular pecha-kucha format, each speaker has just 20 slides for 20 seconds each (i.e. under 7 minutes) to present their innovations. Our selection of new ideas, innovations and inspirations will be presented by:

• Daktronics GmbH, Germany

• GL events Slick Seating, UK

• Wire & Sky, UK

• ENGO, Slovakia

• SKIDATA, Germany & Green4 Solutions, UK

• audioconsulting ag, Switzerland

15.15 Session 4: Accessibility & Inclusive Design With over 80m disabled people living in Europe, accessible sports stadia are economically attractive, more sustainable and functionally more flexible.

15.15 UEFA and CAFE Good Practice Guide to Creating an Accessible Stadium and Matchday ExperienceThis new guide offers practical solutions to delivering high-quality venues that will ensure an inclusive and welcoming fan experience.

• Joyce Cook OBE, Managing Director, Centre for Access to Football in Europe, UK

15.45 Coffee break

16.15 Session 5: Procurement, Process & PriceA plethora of procurement methods is now available but are we still obsessed (or legally obligated) to pursue the low-cost approach? This is a particular challenge when it comes to publicly-financed projects. Surely the argument should be about ‘cheaper vs smarter’ to ensure we get the most practical and future-proof project? Offering their experiences of new procurement approaches are:

16.15 Fast-Track and Value Engineering for a new stadium in Abu DhabiAwarded a design and build contract for a new stadium and multipurpose development in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, the constructors are facing fast-track deadlines and demanding Value Engineering challenges. The budget for the development is €145m and the timeline just 16 months – how will the challenge be met?

• Steven Wilbrenninck, Director, BAM Sports, Germany

16.45 Refurbishment: How Design Can Influence Stadium Success In reality, stadiums are a sum of their parts. Customising particular spaces – such as lounges and hospitality areas – is part of the visitor segmentation process. Leaving aside traditional approaches for new or refurbishment projects, the process begins with design ideas, then a framework covering all five senses and pre-defining colours, materials etc. This is the very start of the ROI process – where “atmosphere” and “revenue” align. The speaker explores a case study from a new stadium in Germany – and will demonstrate where design, manufacture and implementation formed an integrated approach to generate a bigger brand return.

• Prof. Stefan Luppold, Director - BWL, Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg (DHBW) Ravensburg, Germany

STADIUM TOUR & NETWORKINGSTADIUM TOUR & NETWORKING

19.30 ‘Access All Areas’ tour of National Stadium of PolandA new icon for Poland, the stunning National Stadium (Stadion Narodowy) is located on the banks of Warsaw’s Vistula river. Built on the site of the former 10th Anniversary Stadium, the new National Stadium is a multi-purpose sports and entertainment facility which can seat over 58,500 spectators. Construction started in 2008 and the stadium was officially opened in January 2012, in time to host the Opening Match of UEFA’s EURO2012 tournament. Built at a total cost of over €400m, the stadium incorporates: nine levels; over 4,600 premium seats; 62 VIP boxes; 8,000 sq m of offices; 21 dedicated conference rooms; 1,750 spaces on two floors of underground car parking; and a retractable roof with stunning centre-hung video cube and spire. The stadium’s design was inspired by traditional basket-weaving techniques and is already established as an iconic building, not only for the people of Poland but internationally recognisable.

Future development plans for the surrounding sports district include a multipurpose 20,000-capacity indoor arena, an Olympic-size swimming pool, hotels and convention centre facilities.

8.30 Registration & Coffee

8.50 Welcome back

9.00 Session 6: Events, Footprints and LegacyThe advent of modular, demountable and temporary structures means – in theory – that anything (and everything) is possible. From a floating arena, to a temporary stadium in a forest, our industry can deliver solutions for any and every sporting event. But what really works? What is efficient? And what is truly re-usable?

9.00 It’s all in the brief! London 2012 and the Legacy Options for the Olympic Park venues: London’s Summer Olympic Games were an unprecedented success but the challenge is now on for securing a sustainable legacy for the venues of the Olympic Park. Contrasting four of the key London Games’ venues, our speaker – the former Design Principal at LOCOG who spent six years providing the strategic direction on the architectural design and overlay for all venues – outlines the design and build process of each. Such an analysis reveals the critical importance of defining the initial project brief in order to drive value, reduce costs and deliver a truly sustainable venue legacy from ‘the great Games’.

• Kevin Owens, Director, owensowens, UK (and former Design Principal, LOCOG)

9.30 Get it Covered! New Structural Technologies for Stadium Roofs Engineering of the most visible – and the most complicated – element of any stadium project has undergone a revolution in the past 20 years. Charting the development of modern stadium roofing options, our speaker will explain how the roof is a fundamental element of the success of any stadium. We’ll also learn how to ‘build more with less’ and break down the key cost components of any stadium or arena roof build.

• Igor Siotor M. Arch. Eng., Architect & Consultant, Canada

WEDNESDAY 14 NOVEMBERWEDNESDAY 14 NOVEMBER

10.30 Session 7: Technology - How far do you go?Integrating IT and AV into the stadium build process is an increasingly difficult task. As our stadium builds become ‘smarter and better connected’ environments, so does the issue of what to buy, when to buy it and how to plan it into the project. This session will share some case studies of AV/IT delivery within a stadium or arena project. Can we find a ‘best practice’ methodology going foward?

10.30 Donbass Arena: Lessons in Technology ProcurementThe 52,000-seater home of Shaktar Donetsk FC is one of the most technologically advanced stadiums constructed in recent years. How did the project team define its technological requirements and go about procurement for a completely new building type in the outer reaches of Europe? And, three years on from opening, what lessons can be shared for future technology procurement processes for major sporting venues?

• Alexander Atamanenko, CEO, Donbass Arena, Ukraine

11.00 Stadiums for the Digital AgeIn today's world of increasingly complex technical media installations, multi-functionaldevices and computer controlled sound and video systems; the integration of allequipment pieces into a working system is a complex engineering task. The task coversthe definition of requirements to early conceptual studies, AV network engineeringand acoustical design, the choosing of equipment in coherence with budget and technical requirements, and then the implementation, wiring and custom programming of the system's components and control elements. Drawing on recent project examples, the speaker will highlight some of the pitfalls and problems associated with implementing AV/IT systems.

• Dirk Noy, Principal, WSDG (Walters-Storyk Design Group), Switzerland

11.30 Special SessionEURO2012 Stadium Delivery – A Review Over Four YearsFor its EURO2012 tournament, UEFA invested significant resources in monitoring the stadium developments in Poland and Ukraine and providing good practice advice to the stadium teams – not only to ensure the stadiums were delivered on time and to the required standard but also to help create a viable legacy beyond the tournament. In total, eight major stadium schemes were completed in Poland and Ukraine – totalling some €2.418 billion in hard construction costs – but what were the key findings from UEFA's extensive monitoring? And what lessons can be carried forward for future stadium projects and mega-event facility planning?

• Ben Veenbrink, Member of the UEFA Expert Panel Stadium Construction & Management and Principal, The Stadium Consultancy, The Netherlands

• John Beattie, Member of the UEFA Expert Panel Stadium Construction & Management and Stadium & Facilities Director Arsenal FC, UK

With a review of EURO2012 preparations in Poland by:• Andrzej Bogucki, Member of the Board, PL.2012, Poland

12.30 Lunch

13.30 Session 8: Drawing BoardThis must-attend session showcases a selection of new stadium, arena and sports facility projects – each with its own unique design characteristics and delivery challenges.

13.30 The New MaracanãMuch more than just the “stage” for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Final match, the Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho (commonly known as simply ‘The Maracanã’) is a case study of a public stadium – and a cultural heritage site – going through a retrofit, but preserving its essential features. Designed by Fernandes/Arquitetos Associados, the reconstruction project combines old (the exterior façade of the stadium will be largely preserved) and new (the stadium’s stands, bars and toilets will be completely new and finished to the highest specification) to prepare the famous stadium to host not only the 2014 FIFA World Cup, but also the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2016 Summer Olympics.

13.50 Fulham FC’s Expansion of Craven Cottage stadiumLondon’s Fulham Football Club recently announced plans to expand its famous Craven Cottage stadium. The project (pictured) will see an additional 4,000 seats added to the club’s Riverside Stand, taking the stadium's total capacity to 30,000 – with the stadium’s riverside location opened up to matchday and non-matchday visitors.

• Sean O’Loughlin, Finance Director, Fulham FC, UK

14.10 Arena Pernambuco, RecifeArena Pernambuco, in Recife, Brazil is a brand new 46,000 seat stadium that will also serve as a host venue for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

• Daniel H. Fernandes, Principal, Fernandes/Arquitetos Associados, Brazil

14.30 Closing Session: Perfect Project PartnershipsIs there such a thing as a perfect project team? How best do we organise the various skill-sets in a stadium project and align their (sometimes competing) interests to ensure on-time and in-budget delivery? Opening with a case study example, our closing roundtable debates the best ways of working together.

14.30 Managing the project expectations gapManaging the construction of any major building project is a highly challenging process. But new stadium builds, in particular, typically involve tight budgets, difficult deadlines and complex scope issues. Managing the gap between owners’ expectations and the final project as delivered by contractors is an essential responsibility of the Project Manager. But just how should this ‘project expectations gap’ be addressed?

• Rob Camping, Director, Project and Development Services Pty Ltd, Australia

15.00 Big football tournaments as a challenge for a designerMajor event tournaments create unique challenges for the design and delivery of stadiums and related infrastructure. Poland’s leading sports architectural practice shares some of its experiences in the delivery of EURO2012 facilities.
