What a wonderful time of year, “fall” in Del Tura. All around us we hear “welcome back - we missed you”. Our Snow Birds are returning home. The number of people attending coffee hour has gone from 120 to over 200. It is so nice to see everyone again. We hope you got plenty of rest and are ready for a big season of fun and entertainment. Be sure to attend the Craft Fair Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2 and 3 to see all the beautiful things our Del Tura and area crafters have made. These one of a kind, hand-made items make wonderful Christmas presents. Friday night is strictly for Del Tura residents and you get a free glass of wine. The Statutory Committee has scheduled their first meeting with Management to discuss the rate increase. One of the first items to be discussed will be how some of our homes have been classified. There are eight different Market Rent Classifications: Interior (331), Perimeter (222), Large/corner (123), Superior Interior (51), Preserve (98), Golf Course/Premium (274), Lake (102), and Lake/Golf Course (160). We have identified several homes we are in disagreement with their classification. We are requesting a list of comparable mobile home communities and their rents used by Hometown to determine market rent. The lot increases for prospectus one (1) thru eight (8) is limited to the CPI while prospectus ten (10) can be raised by 3%. It is important to know what prospectus you have and be familiar with it. We will receive changes to the Rules and Regulations after the first of the year. Now is the time to also become familiar with them if you haven’t read them for a while. If you have strong feelings about any of the Rules and Regulations and would like to see it changed, contact one of the members of the Statutory Committee or anyone on the Board. Be an informed resident, know the rules, understand your prospectus - then read Fla. Statute 723 - copies of each of these are available in the HOA office. Understanding these documents and using them are the only power residents have to fight rent increases or unreasonable

rules. Social Security and pension increases have not kept pace with lot increases. Many of our residents have been forced to move due to these increases. Let’s help ourselves and our neighbors, be informed. Thanksgiving will be upon us very shortly. Since we have a beautiful updated restaurant—HOA is not cooking this year. We invite you to the Fountain Grille. For under $11.00 you will get Roast Turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, fresh vegetable, rolls and cranberries. Nick will be on hand in the HOA office starting the first Tuesday in November to take reservations. I might even order an extra dinner so we have those wonderful leftovers. For our residents unable to get out, we are asking for volunteers to deliver meals. If you can donate an hour on Thanksgiving Day around 11:00 a.m. give Ruth Ann Blevins or me a call. Jim O’Brien called me the other day to talk about Christmas. Yep, I said Christmas - it’s right around the corner. Seems Jim and his wife Barbara felt the entrance to D.T. looked a little sparse last Christmas. I agree with them. Where were all the beautiful lights, the deer (okay, so I like deer)? He has volunteered to head up a committee to decorate the front entrance down to the stop sign at Las Palmas. If you have lights, (or deer), a little time, or a few dollars to donate give Jim a call. (849-1644) Jim has even found someone who has a cherry-picker to help. What a fun way to start the Christmas season. Our “Christmas Tree Lighting” is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 3. Jackie has again volunteered to direct a Christmas play that evening. So mark your calendars for a wonderful evening to kick off the Holidays. The HOA Board meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 1:30 in the Starlight Ballroom. We really appreciate those of you who take the time out of your busy schedule to attend these meetings. Thank you. Well Tony, order more donuts - our snow birds are back. See you at coffee. Joyce

The FISH medical storage trailer purchased used in 1999 is in dire need of repairs. The trailer is 10’x40’ and has particleboard floors along with a vapor barrier that needs to be pulled up and replaced. The windows, doors and roof also need to be replaced as they are leaking. If the trailer is not repaired FISH will have to stop loaning out medical equipment. This service is desperately

needed in Del Tura. We serve up to five requests a day. We appreciate any donations to help us with this project. You may drop off your donation at the FISH table during Tuesday morning Coffee Hour or you can contact FISH at: 239-997-FISH (3574) or call Dianne Conlon at 313-1308 or Rich Symes at 731-1308. Respectfully submitted, Your FISH Board Members

We, in our committee, have chosen three holidays in which to bring joy to our friends in Del Tura. They are Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Folks who are ill, have just gotten out of the hospital, have lost a loved one, or are lonely are the recipients of these baskets.Several FISH members gather to put these baskets together, then go out and deliver the lovely baskets. The joy is not only for the person who

receives the basket, but also for the person who brings the basket. It is very rewarding to see the smiles on peoples’ faces and to meet new friends. Come … join FISH and find one of our many committees that is right for you. It’s so much fun and the satisfaction you get is priceless! Remember, “The more you give, the more you get.”

Florida’s redistricting of the political boundary lines is completed every ten years to reflect changes in population. Redistricting for 2012 has been completed. Del Tura Golf and Country Club districts have been changed to reflect the changes made by the legislature in 2012, placing us in State Senate District 30 and the State House District 79. Florida House of Representative Matthew “Matt” Caldwell has already been elected for District 79 and will not need to run for election in November 2012. There are two candidates running for election to represent State Senate District 30. The Federation of Manufactured Home Owners of Florida, Inc. (FMO) published, in the FMO News, recommendations for voting in the November 2012 election. You may ask why the election of state legislators is so important to manufactured home owners. By submitting bills or amendments recommended by the FMO or helping to defeat those bills opposed by the FMO, our elected officials have provided an important service. In many instances, our Florida legislators have exceeded our expectations in supporting our lifestyle. There were seven bills filed in the 2011-2012 session, none of which would have been in our best interest. The bills died in committee. Since election returns identify the precincts voting and the number of voters as well as the outcome from voting, it is important for residents of manufactured home communities to vote in any election. But is that enough? No. While it is very important, it is not enough to go to the polls and cast a vote. The way we continue to obtain legislative support is through size and communication. Know your elected officials. Communicate with your State representatives to let them know your opinions. If you believe strongly on an issue, make a point to write a letter, email, or telephone your State Senator or Representative to express your concerns and your expectations regarding their actions. Join the FMO – add your name to the growing number of Floridians who depend upon the FMO to be aware of and advise us of the proposed legislation that will affect our lifestyle and our financial situations.

During the Thanksgiving season, many of us will reflect upon people in our lives for whom we are thankful, but how many of us will take time to express our gratitude to those who have added to our quality of life? Several members took the opportunity to do so. For example, Gloria Ellis is grateful for Anna Wilson because of the friendship Anna demonstrated by visiting Gloria daily when she wasn’t feeling well. Others who expressed gratitude for having caring friends include Mary Lou Pudlo and Bev Krueger. The love of family members was mentioned by Joan Whaley who expressed her gratitude toward her daughter and son-in-law who moved to Del Tura from Wisconsin to be here for her. Others who expressed gratitude for family members included Lynn Everett (children), Kathleen Quigley (adult grandchildren), Millie Hanrahan (husband), and Bonnie Sharpless (husband). We all agree that our gratitude should be shared with the people who enhance our lives. Marita Kemp, who was a long-time resident of Del Tura and a member of the Good Timers for many years, recently passed. From her home, she had a great view of happenings on South hole #4 and on Las Palmas Boulevard. When Marita wasn’t golfing, she served as a cheerleader for those approaching “her hole.” Holiday parade participants who passed by Marita’s house were greeted with cheers and encouragement as well. She loved a good story, good meal, good drink, good friends, and good times. She was quick to register her disapproval of all things petty and just as quick with a laugh or a smile for the people and things she loved. We will dearly miss her courage, tenacity, wit, and friendship. We send get-well wishes to Helen Stormer and Judy Fehrman. Additionally, we wish Cora Dunn good health and

much happiness in her new home. Cora, we will miss you very much. Please keep in touch. We welcome new member Sue Maginn. We are looking forward to sharing many good times with her. New members are encouraged to join at any time during the year. For details, contact Pat Clemens at 567-0716 or attend a monthly meeting at 5:00 p.m. the second Tuesday of any month in the Clubhouse. The October birthday dinner was hosted by Cathy Wallace and Kathleen Quigley at the Firehouse Sports Grill. Birthday celebrants were Debby Taylor, Barbara Boyd, and Marge Nosach. We were pleased to support the restaurant of a retired local fire fighter whose dream was to own his own restaurant and utilize recipes from various firehouses. His food was able to “light the fire” of many of our members. The By-laws Committee has completed its review of our present by-laws and will be sharing its recommendations with members at the November 6th meeting. Members’ input will be encouraged. Most of us have seen the movie “Miracle on 34th Street,” but few of us have seen the musical version. Good Timers members will have that opportunity if they attend the November birthday luncheon hosted by Louise Dodge at the Broadway Palm on November 29th at 11:30 a.m. Seating is limited, so if you are interested, call Louise at 543-5187 to check on ticket availability. The price is $45.00. Louise needs payment at or before the November 6th monthly meeting. Members, be sure to include the December 11th Good Timers Holiday Dinner on your calendar. The dinner will be held in the Del Tura Restaurant at 5:00 p.m. Cost is covered by yearly dues. More details will be included in our November Tower column.

Thankfulness grows in meaning as we grow in life…. As young children we were taught to show our appreciation by blessing the people that we loved in our nightly prayers. As Dad or Mom tucked us in each night, we would give thanks and ask God to give blessings to all the people that made up our world and supplied us with our basic daily needs. With the help of a parent, grandparent, or another loving family member we would recite our grocery list of blessings. Each and every one of them was vital to our survival and it was so important not to forget any of them. We were thankful for our daily food, a warm sheltering home, but most of all the secure feeling of being loved unconditionally. Later, as we entered school our world grew larger and we realized the importance of having friends and we began to give thanks and blessings to the new people in our lives. It didn’t matter if our new friends were less or more fortunate than we were; we all began our lives being thankful for the simple things of life, most importantly the love of the people who cared for you, encouraged you, hugged

you when you needed it, or when you didn’t. Unconditionally! Material things didn’t mean much back then … heck we were kids, we were happy, and the world was full of people who loved us, fed us, provided us with everything we needed to survive and thrive with. And we were Thankful! As our lives brought us more responsibility, we began to realize that the importance of being thankful became more than a just a list of names that we would rattle off like a grocery list. When we recited those prayers as younger children kneeling beside our beds, we did, so with loving eyes watching and patient ears listening. As young adults we soon realized the focus shifts from having our individual needs met and meeting the needs of others. During this period in our lives our circle of family and friends continued to grow even larger. We were striving to be successful, beginning our own families, asking God to now bless us with the strength to provide for them each day. Through perseverance and hard work we were able to raise our families and foster in them the independence that they would need to start their own lives. The circle of life continued to

evolve… Now in this stage of our lives we are thankful for each precious moment spent with family and friends. The special people that come into our lives “at different seasons for different reasons” giving us those beautiful memories that we will always hold close within our hearts. As our circle of life continues and the years pass we find the simple things are the most important. Those basic needs that were so vital to us at the beginning of our lives; love, acceptance, kindness, compassion continue to be the common thread that helps us through the ups and downs of life. As we bow our heads to give thanks on this Thanksgiving Day, please remember to be thankful for all the people who have touched our lives in the past and the ones who continue to enhance our lives in the present. Let us all ask our God to bless us with good health and the ability to open up our hearts to everyone in need. Whether it be a smile, a hug, or a kind word … the effects will be everlasting.

Happy Thanksgiving and God Bless!

We invite you to come and share a really fun evening with us at The Rep. The play is picked, the cast is chosen, and we will soon be in rehearsals for our next show. We are presenting LUXURY CRUISE by Fred Carmichael. I think you will really like this play. It has everything: pathos, humor, and everything in between. I know many of you regularly go on cruises. Well this one is for you! Those of you who have never been on a cruise, well, this one is for you too! Please put the following dates in your calendars: Our performances will be on February 21, 22 and 23, 2013. We do rely on your support every year. Without fail, you have done just that. I hope you will all do so again. This is a very big operation, involving many people from our community here in Del Tura. The actors put in hours and hours of study, the backstage team is with us at every rehearsal for many weeks. Our set building team who so brilliantly turn my vision into a reality give me hours of their time.

The sound and lighting teams give us so much of their time also, working on all things technical. The box office staff prepares well in advance of the opening of the box office and comes to coffee early in the morning to sell tickets. The ushers, who come on show nights, give our theatre a friendly but professional atmosphere. My husband Richard puts in hours at the computer in order to bring you a souvenir play bill, plus other tasks that he does so willingly for me. All this happens before we open the doors to you on opening night. Please honor all these wonderful people by coming to see what they have been doing so splendidly all these weeks. Remember, also, the Christmas Tree Lighting/Pageant will be on December 3, 2012. Molly Walker will be giving you more details during the weeks ahead. By the time you read this you will be preparing for the holiday season. On behalf of The Del Tura Rep. we wish you joy, happiness, good health, and peace. Jacqueline Keen ([email protected])

We’ve observed some Del Turians are not using their turn signals while driving through our community. Are you on your cell phones or texting? Not safe! There’s enough of that poor behavior on Cleveland! Also, as a reminder, children under the age of 16 are NOT allowed to drive a golf cart. As stated in Del Tura’s Rules & Regulations, under section 3, Children, paragraph E, “at no time are children without a valid driver’s license, allowed to drive golf carts”.

• THE ARTIST My capsule review for the month is BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL. It’s an affectionately told comedy about a group of English retirees who travel to India for what they think is an elegant resort. It’s a charming tale that says it’s never too late to find love and a fresh beginning at any age. It has a great cast headed by Judi Dench and Tom Wilkinson.

Medicare is health insurance for the following:• People 65 or older;• People under 65 with certain disabilities;• People of any age with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)(permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant)The different parts of Medicare help cover specific services: Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) Helps cover inpatient care in hospitals. Helps cover skilled nursing facility, hospice, and home health care. Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) Helps cover doctors’ and other health care providers’ services, outpatient care, durable medical equipment, and home health care. Helps cover some preventive services to help maintain your health and to keep certain illnesses from getting worse. Medicare Part C (also known as Medicare Advantage) Offers health plan options run by Medicare-approved private insurance companies. Medicare Advantage Plans are a way to get the benefits and services covered under Part A and Part B. Most Medicare Advantage Plans cover Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D). Some Medicare Advantage Plans may include extra benefits for an extra cost. Medicare Part D (Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage) Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs. May help lower your prescription drug costs and help protect against higher costs. Run by Medicare-approved private insurance companies. (taken from the 2012 Medicare & You Handbook, page 14)

It is November and our league has already startded the 2012-2013 season. We have once again, a full 20 team complement comprised of most of last season’s teams and also three new teams and I would like to mention those new people here by name and welcome them into our league. They are Stan Peters and Don Mummert as a team, Bill and Onallee Trachsel as a team and Roger and Debra Lattimer as the third new team. We are glad to have you and hope you enjoy playing in our league with the rest of us. Writing this on October 12, as you read this, our league will have already started our season, as our first games will be played on Friday, October

26. We also still have the list of people who subbed last year and we will keep your names and phone numbers on our list unless you call to have them removed. Once again, we are always looking for people who would like to be subs as there is seldom a week that goes by that we don’t need you. Again, if you are interested in being a sub, you can call either Janet or me at 731-0892. If we don’t answer, please leave a brief message and we’ll happily return your call. I am looking forward to another fun filled season. See you on the courts.

Road Trip…”racing” to Sebring…golf, eat, socialize, have great times… all put together for forty Del Tura residents by Lou Picciuto with help from his associates, Sherri Fitzpatrick and Bill Weddleton. The recent three-day trip to Sebring included golfing on three completely different courses with four-person team competition, partner competition and an individual championship. The four-person best ball winners on the opening day at Highland Ridge South were Rick Robbins, Mike Overholser, Peggy Deems and Liz Flanagan with a score of 67. After an evening of bragging, making excuses, talking about the great and/or unusual golfing situations and eating, the group

readied for the next day of a four-person couples’ tourney. The team of Bob and Peggy Deems and Lynne and Neil Miller trounced the field with an eleven under par score of 61 at the Turtle Run Golf and Country Club. The final day of golf took place at Highland Ridge’s South course and was a completion of the pre-arranged Couples Championship. With a final day of 67, Bob Deems and Betty Boop (199 for the three days) edged Rick Robbins and Debbie Overholser by a stroke and Steve Cuffe and Kay Rolader by two. Awards were handed out after the final results for top men’s and women’s net score for the three days, and receiving the winner’s golf shirts were Kay Rolader at 218 net and Bob Deems at 221.

Many Del Turians ventured “off campus” in May to New Port Richey, FL. for a great golf outing called The Spring Classic. It is held on two challenging 18-hole courses. All had a great time with golf, food and everyone receiving a prize. Some of our folks got trophies, clubs and money. This will be their 27th year of holding this event and it will be held the first week of May 2013. Sign ups for this will start in December 2012 so get a team together and join us! Any questions call Don Soper at 217-0879 or Debbie Overholser at 731-2664.

Advance Directives are written instructions letting others know the type of care you want if you are ill and two doctors state there are no other treatments that can help you recover. Many people choose to prepare a document stating exactly what their family should say to the doctors. This Advance Directive document is provided free of charge to all individuals by the Lee Memorial Health System at the request of the State of Florida. A lawyer is not needed to fill out this document. Two witnesses are needed to watch the signature of the individual. The witness should not be the health care decision maker or alternate health care decision maker.

Parts of the Advance Directive:1. Living Will: Records your end of life wishes for medical treatment in case you are no longer able to speak for yourself and will be used when life-prolonging treatment only delays your impending death.2. Health Care Surrogate: You have the right to choose the person you trust to make health care decisions for you when you are so ill that you cannot speak for yourself. The person should be able to evaluate and discuss with your doctors the outcome of your medical condition and any treatment/surgery that needs to be performed.

Planning for the Future: Advance Directives

HEALTH NEWS

Oatmeal, kidney beans, apples, pears, barley and prunes are all “soluble fiber”. Fish: two servings a week give heart healthy omega 3 fatty acids. Bake or grill. Walnuts, almonds and other nuts help keep blood vessels healthy. Only a handful a day of unsalted nuts is recommended.

Drinking fluids is important to our health Drink eight 8-ounce glasses of fluid a day (total 64 oz.) that do not contain sugar or alcohol. Water is the main ingredient in our body and makes up 60% of our body weight. Water also flushes out toxins from our vital organs.

The following is something to ponder: If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep … you are richer than 75% of the world. If you have money in the bank and in your wallet with spare change in a dish someplace, you are among the top 8% of the worlds’ wealthy. If you woke up this morning with more health than illness … you are more blessed than the million who will not survive the week. If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture or the pangs of starvation … you are ahead of 500 million people in the world. If you can attend a church meeting

without fear of harassment, arrest, torture or death … you are more blessed than three billion people in the world. If you can hold someone’s hand, hug them or even touch them on the shoulder … you are blessed because you can offer a healing touch. If you can read this message you are luckier than two million people in the world who can not read at all. If you live in the United States of America … Be thankful. HAPPY THANKSGIVING

November is the month we pause and remember all the men and women who have served our great country in time of war. Many of these honored veterans are among our neighbors in Del Tura and the one we wish to spotlight today is BILL WALKER, an early resident of Avenida Sierra. Bill spent twenty-one months in Korea from 1952 to 1953 during what is now known as the “Forgotten War”. It has not been forgotten by him and his family, however. Although born in Detroit, Bil l ’s family moved to Yonkers when he was just a baby and it was there that he grew up and attended school. His family lived in what was then called a railroad flat: a very narrow house, similar to early mobile homes. After graduating from high school, Bill started to work for the New York Central Railroad as a clerk. Before he could really begin his career, though, he was drafted into the Army and trained at Fort Devens, MA. He thought he was going to be sent to Russia but was turned down for that assignment and sent to Korea, instead. Everyone who serves in the Army doesn’t necessarily get to perform heroic feats on the battlefield but often perform very important support duties. This was the case with Bill as he was assigned to the Korean Military Advisory Group which was in charge of training Koreans to fight their own battles. The Americans tried to establish a minor West Point for the Koreans. Bill did clerical work and often took notes for the Americans at Court Martials held there. He also worked in Supplies. He achieved the rank of Private First Class and then was discharged and returned to the States, resuming his job at the New York Central. Before he left, however, the Koreans presented him with a beautiful Certificate of Appreciation which he holds in the picture. In November, 1955, he and Molly were married, having met previously at a church in Yonkers, NY. Eventually the couple had three sons, Bill, Robert, and John, and today they have four granddaughters, and one grandson who

was born on Bill’s birthday. Bill continued his career with the railroad and became a steno clerk, then a train makeup clerk (scheduling cars), and finally a traveling secretary on the railroad. The Walkers moved from Yonkers after their first son was born and then raised their family in Peekskill, NY, where they lived for twenty years. New York Central merged with Penn Central and then became Conrail and Bill and Molly moved to Westchester, PA, a suburb of Philadelphia. He retired

in Jan., 1990, after 42 years with the railroad. Bill and Molly were used to visiting Florida as her parents lived in Clearwater. They decided, though, that that was not the area for their own retirement and began to check other parts of the west coast. Del Tura impressed them because all the houses had attached garages. They paid for their

lot here in 1988 and finally built their house in 1991. Originally there was a lake on the land around Avenida Sierra but that was later filled in. It was at the Coffee Hour that they first became acquainted with other residents of our community. The donuts for Coffee Hour were originally bought from Dunkin Donuts and they would deliver them to the gate here. Living so near the entrance, Bill would then pick them up and take them to our Clubhouse. Bill has been a member of the Investment Club here since 1992 and also was active in the VFW Post at Del Tura. He was a driver for FISH and enjoyed bocce ball and bowling. Being married to a very community-minded wife, he has been involved with many of her activities. Together they have traveled to many countries including Japan and made fifteen trips to Germany where their son lived. From there they saw much of central Europe. In his spare time, Bill enjoys photography and putting together jigsaw puzzles. As we honor all our Veterans on November 11, we’ll particularly remember our own Bill Walker who exemplifies the best qualities of so many of them.

Browsing the library, I picked out a book by an author new to me, Debbie Macomber. Suddenly I was caught up in a world of knitting and a cozy little shop in Seattle named “A Good Yarn”, where customers become friends. The story winds around the lives of Lydia (proprietor of the shop), her sister Margaret, an ex-hippie named Alix, an unwed pregnant Colette and Susannah, the flower shop owner. Each chapter focuses on the lives of the main characters and the crises that occur in each of their lives. As the reader gets caught up in the events, suddenly she feels a sense of friendship toward the characters. Margaret’s daughter is the victim of a carjacking and almost loses her life. Alix comes from a lousy family: her mother is

in prison and her father has disappeared. She has done her time on the streets, but has turned her life around and is engaged to a wonderful man who happens to be, of all things, a youth minister. Some debate exists about her ability to present herself as the wife of a pastor. Colette is a young widow, childless, who spends a one-night stand with her boss out of loneliness and consequently finds herself pregnant. Resolutions of these dilemmas come in time, helped by the friendships. This is the kind of novel you hate to see end. A good read!

All of us on the HOA Welcome Committee are busy meeting with new residents. Our goal is to have them feel at home in Del Tura by telling how to get involved in the many activities provided during the week and how to find out about the events that occur once a month or once a year. We want them to know the importance of joining FMO, HOA, and FISH. Since everything in Del Tura is done by volunteers we encourage them to use their talents to get involved. There have been many new residents for whom we have not received any information; therefore, if you have not been visited or if you hear of anyone who has not yet met with a committee member contact any member on the list below. We plan on

having new resident get-togethers during the year in order to try to reach every one. MarleneDeGraaf

The Concert will take place on Friday, December 14, 2012. Rehearsals for the concert will begin on Monday Nov. 12 at 3:00 p.m. Rehearsal will also take place on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 7:00 p.m. We hope the audience will join in with us as we have lots of fun singing many of our old holiday songs. Anyone new wishing to join our group,

please feel free to come to our opening rehearsals, as all are welcome. Our director, Edna Smith, will have returned and will lead us in another great concert. Please attend as it is important to get started right away! Any questions please call Peggy Iacovono at731-8819.

Monday Afternoon Handicapped 9-Ball League Beginning November 5, 2012, play will begin from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. This is a brand new format derived from the American Pool Players Association whereby handicaps are assigned based on skill level. This means all players have an opportunity to win regardless of their skill level.

We will play a double-elimination tournament each Monday with points given for first, second and third place finishes. The winner of the first half of the season will play the winner of the second half for the championship. It is not necessary for you to play each Monday. Come as often as you like. A sign-up sheet is posted in the billiard room.

The next sale is coming and we are collecting! Our next sale is scheduled for Friday March 8 and Saturday March 9, 2013. We are hoping for lots of donations so we can exceed last year’s sale! As you know it takes a lot of donations, volunteers and coordinating to have

a successful sale. The more we collect the more we can sell and the more we can share the proceeds with local charities. Anyone who can volunteer to help or have donations let me know. Call Barbara Blanton @ 239-543-6961. Thank you in advance for your support.

Should You Take a PenSion BuYouT? Have you recently received a pension buyout offer? If so, you need to decide if you should take the buyout, which could provide you with a potentially large lump sum, or continue accepting your regular pension payments for the rest of your life. It’s a big decision.

Clearly, there’s no “one size fits all” answer — your choice needs to be based on your individual circumstances. So, as you weigh your options, you’ll need to consider a variety of key issues, including the following:

• Estate considerations — Your pension payments generally end when you and/or your spouse dies, which means your children will get none of the money. But if you were to roll the lump sum into an Individual Retirement Account (IRA), and you don’t exhaust it in your lifetime, you could still have something to leave to your family members.

• Taxes — If you take the lump sum and roll the funds into your IRA, you control how much you’ll be taxed and when, based on the amounts you choose to withdraw and the date you begin taking withdrawals. (Keep in mind, though, that you must start taking a designated minimum amount of withdrawals from a traditional IRA when you reach age 70½. Withdrawals taken before age 59½ are subject to taxes and penalties.) But if you take a pension, you may have less control over your income taxes, which will be based on your monthly payments.

• Inflation — You could easily spend two or three decades in retirement — and during that time, inflation can really add up. To cite just one example, the average cost of a new car was $7,983 in 1982; 30 years later, that figure is $30,748, according to TrueCar.com. If your pension checks aren’t indexed for inflation, they will lose purchasing power over time. If you rolled over your lump sum into an IRA, however, you could put the money into investments offering growth potential, keeping in mind, of course, that there are no guarantees.

• Cash flow — If you’re already receiving a monthly pension, and you’re spending every dollar you receive just to meet your living expenses, you may be better off by keeping your pension payments intact. If you took the lump sum and converted it into an IRA, you can withdraw whatever amount you want (as long as you meet the required minimum distributions), but you’ll have to avoid withdrawing so much that you’ll eventually run out of money.

• Confidence in future pension payments — From time to time, companies are forced to reduce their pension obligations due to unforeseen circumstances. You may want to take this into account as you decide whether to continue taking your monthly pension payments, but it’s an issue over which you have no control. On the other hand, once your lump sum is in an IRA, you have control over both the quality and diversification of your investment dollars. However, the trade-off is that investing is subject to various risks, including loss of principal.

Before selecting either the lump sum or the monthly pension payments, weigh all the factors carefully to make sure your decision fits into your overall financial strategy. With a choice of this importance, you will probably want to consult with your financial and tax advisors. Ultimately, you may find that this type of offer presents you with a great opportunity — so take the time to consider your options.

Welcome to Del Tura...The folks pictured below all purchased homes

in Del Tura during 2012.They were feted by our Del Tura Home Owners

Association Welcome Committee. When you see them, be sure to give them the

“Del Tura wave” and say hello.

Now that many of you are returning to Del Tura for the season, there may be some work that needs to be done at your home. You are strongly encouraged to check the Contractor Survey, either in the HOA office or the HOA website. Find out whom your neighbors recommend. Remember, a contractor advertising in the Del Tura Phone Book or “The Tower” is not an endorsement by Hometown or the HOA. Be especially cautious of air conditioning and plumbing contractors. Also never pay more than 10% up front and get a written cost for the work. If a contractor’s

finances or credit will not allow them to start work or purchase materials, then you may not want to hire them. Also you should hire only licensed contractors with insurance. If a contractor does not have insurance and one of the workers gets injured, you could be liable for their expenses, such as medical bills and loss of wages. When you have work done please fill out a survey form, these are available in the HOA office and at the Tuesday morning Coffee Hour. If you have any questions please contact Tom Lord at 239-543-9072.

Editor’s note: Enjoy this tongue in cheek article and the humor expressed. This is not a joke and the writer prefers to remain nameless, the reason for which you will soon see. This happened to me as I was doing my good deed for the day. Old friends sold their Del Tura home and moved away. After the home ownership changed for about the third time I thought my friends might like to see the attractive changes the current owner had made to the exterior of the home. So … off I went with my digital camera to take some pictures. As I walked into the yard to line up my shots I noticed three Muscovy ducks waddling around, but I didn’t pay any attention to them. After taking my photos I started to walk back to my golf cart, parked in the street. As I walked I felt a tug at the back of my slacks. I turned around and, lo and behold, I had been goosed by a duck!
