For the majority of the 2012 season, Max Stassi has had the responsibility of being the primary catcher for the Stockton Ports. During a year that was filled with ups and downs, Stassi has pretty much dealt with it all behind the plate – from catching brothers (Sean and Ryan Doolittle), to Athletics pitchers on rehab (Brett Anderson), to a constantly changing starting rotation; he’s seen 24 pitchers come through Stockton in five short months. You may think it could all get a bit overwhelm-ing for one person to deal with, but Stassi’s got it mastered. “I’d say it comes naturally to me,” he commented. “I’ve been catching my whole life, so it’s just kind of second nature. I’ve developed relationships with pitchers for a long time now.”

Although Stassi has shared time with a couple other catchers this season, it’s pretty much been his year behind the plate. “It’s been an interesting year,” Max said. “We’ve had a lot of guys come and go, but it’s fun to try to get to know different pitchers throughout the organization.” He definitely had the op-portunity to get to know pitchers in the Athletics organization this year, as the 2012 Ports pitching staff experienced a number of changes this season, from roster moves sending players up and down on a semi-regular basis, to start-ing pitchers and relievers switching roles throughout the season.

Stassi has handled all of this with ease, and has said that he enjoys getting to know all of his teammates. “From a pitching standpoint, you just have to know what their tendencies are – what gets them motivated every day and just what it takes.” Max added, “when I go up for a mound visit, I have to know what gets them right; if I need

to back off a little bit or be a little more vocal towards them. Every guy’s different, you just gotta figure out what makes each guy tick.”

In addition to all of the work he’s put in behind the plate this sea-son, Max has also had a solid year offensively. As of August 23, Max is batting .268 on the season, which is the second highest average on the team, with 15 home runs and 45 RBIs. He was even named the California League Player of the Week for the week of July 16-22 where we went 8-for-27 (.296 batting average) with four multi-hit games, even cranking four home runs and driving in five runs. “I just go out and try to play hard every day, and that week that I had the results that I’d been working towards,” said Max about the recognition from the Cal League. “This year I’ve been focused on a lot on the process of swinging at good pitches and hitting the ball hard and the results fell that week. It’s a big honor, and I couldn’t have done it without my teammates.”

This weekend the Ports are recognizing all of Stassi’s accomplish-ments with his jersey giveaway Friday night. This giveaway is a special one, as Max was selected by Ports fans. “It’s a cool honor to know that I have some fan support out there,” Max said about being selected for the jersey giveaway. “I can imagine it has something to do with being the local guy, but it’s still pretty cool to have the jersey. This is definitely a first for me.” The Yuba City native has always had a big fan club here in Stockton and in the greater bay area, and it’ll only increase in size as he continues to move through the Athletics organization.

Pitching with Jake Brown

Left-handed pitcher, Jake Brown was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in

2010 from Georgia Southern University. Brown has been an impressive pitcher in his

last three years. In 2010, he posted a 1.83 ERA with the Vancouver Canadians. In 2011

Jake pitched 50 innings and posted a 1.62 ERA with Low A- affiliate the Burlington

Bee’s before getting promoted to the Stockton Ports where he pitched 99 innings

with a 5.55 ERA. Jake returned to Stockton for the 2012 season where he has been a

crucial part of this the Ports roster this season.

Jake tells us “the last three years have been a big learning curve for me especially

here in the CAL league.”

There have been some twists and turns in his learning curve but he has had some

remarkable outings this season. On May 25 he pitched 5 innings with 8 strikeouts,

no walks, and only 1 earned run. This contributed to his earning of CAL Pitcher of the

Week for the week of May 29th. More recently on July 25 Brown pitched 7 innings

with 1 earned run lowering his ERA to 4.32.

As of August 21st Jake’s ERA is 4.80, “My goal for the rest of the season is to get my

ERA in the 3’s and a few more wins for the Ports.” Jake has a couple more starts in the

remaining 13 games of the season.

Browns pitching style is quick when he is up on the mound. He told us, “When I

am pitching I just think about my rhythm of being fast and being quick out there. It

keeps the infield and outfield on their toes so they make better plays.”

Pitch One: Four-seam Fastball

When it’s thrown: First pitch to get a strike or inside outside corner.

Speed: 86-89mph

Origin: I started throwing a fastball when I was little, like during C ball.

By: Kinsey Eaton Pitch Two: Curve Ball

When it’s thrown: First pitch strikes or sometimes I’ll throw it in the dirt to get a hitter to swing over it and get a strike three.

Speed: 69-73mph

Origin: Not until high school so about 15 or 16.

Pitch Three: Changeup

When it’s thrown: First pitch and it is also my strike-out pitch, I use it to get a batter to swing over it or ground out to get the third strike.

Speed: 79-80mph

Origin: In high school

Pitch Four: Slider

When it’s thrown: I normally throw this later in the count.

Speed: 77-80mph

Origin: I did not learn a slider until high school.

We talked with Jake about his pitching style and

we asked him to describe some of his own pitches.

A successful season of Charitable Giving

Seventy-one Ports home games – check. Thirteen entertaining fireworks shows – check. A few dozen unique promotional nights – check. A 2012 base-ball season full of community involvement and charitable giving – check.

As the 2012 Ports season comes to a close, it may not have been the most successful year on the field, but off the field is another story. With a total of eight Anchor Fund events taking place since the season began in April (Pancakes with the Ports, Alumni Nights, Root Beer Float Day, two sessions of Youth Baseball Camp, Women’s Clinic, Fish with a Port, and Pink Night), a lot of money was raised that will benefit, and hopefully make a difference in, the Stockton community.

The season opened with a new event on April 14 – Pancakes with the Ports. This event was a Meet the Team pancake breakfast presented by Martha’s All Natural. Fans were invited to feast on pancakes and sausage while meeting the new faces of the Stockton Ports. Tickets cost only $5 and of course, all money went to the Ports Anchor Fund.

The Stockton community helps the Ports give backBy Margaret Sacchet

The ever-popular Root Beer Float Day was held on a hot day in June, and fans kept cool as they purchased unlimited floats for only $6. Ports players scooped ice cream and poured root beer for fans waiting patiently in line. Root Beer Float Day alone raised a record $3,000 for the Ports An-chor Fund.

Page 30: 11th Edition of the Game Day Magazine

As the summer months continue, the Ports Youth Baseball Camp is always an event both children and adults look forward to. Kids had the choice to at-tend one session in June, one session in July, or both sessions for a discounted price. Boys and girls learned baseball skills from the pros, as the Ports players and coaches ran both camps. Both sessions combined raised close to $4,500.

Fish with a Port is an annual event held on a player off day. Players and fans got the chance to fish all morning on the Delta with a BASS Pro Fisher-man. Once the boats arrived back to the dock around noon, a weigh-in was held and the team with the biggest catch was awarded a prize. A delicious lasagna lunch was then served in the Club, followed by a raffle. Roughly $500 was raised.

The largest charitable event of the season, Pink Night, was held on Fri-day, August 17. All proceeds from the event benefitted St. Joseph’s Medical Center, Breast Health Services. The biggest fundraiser of the night was $1 per ticket sold went back to St. Joseph’s. Fans had the chance to contribute in other ways as well. There was a player memorabilia raffle, Pink Night T-shirt sales, and a player jersey auction after the game. With all of that combined, $5,400 was raised this year for a great cause. Several other children-based, non-Anchor Fund events were held during the 2012 season including four Baseball by the Books reading days, two very successful Education Days, a Challenger Little League game, and Splash’s Kickball Birthday Party.

The Ports mascot Splash was also busy this season visiting with children all over the Stockton community. Since the off-season began last Septem-ber, Splash has made over 100 community visits with Ports front office staff. These appearances included visits to local elementary schools, non-profit organizations, little league opening days, hospital visits, and much, much more. Once the Ports players arrived in town in April, they began their com-munity outreach as well. The players appeared at close to 50 events through out the 2012 season.

Another way Ports fans and the Stockton community were able to give back this season was with our Ticket Donation Program. Ports season ticket holders had the option to donate any unused Ports tickets back to the Ports organization, with the Ports then matching each donation. These tickets were then donated out to non-profit organizations. This year, over 400 tick-ets were generously donated out to the Stockton community.

The Ports also have a very active donation program. Each year, during both the off-season and in-season, we receive hundreds of donation requests for tickets and merchandise. So far in 2012, the Ports have donated to more than 250 different organizations totaling more than $20,000 worth of tickets.
