Deal Me In: A Workshop and Film Screening onYouth Gambling for Youth, Parents, and Professionals

Today’s young people are the first generationexposed to widespread access to gamblingvenues, ubiquitous advertising and general socialapproval of gambling. Deal Me In is a youth-driven documentary that takes a hard look atthe possible impacts and experiences of gamblingon this generation. Through personal stories andreal-world youth impacts, Deal Me In gives youtha voice, helping to bring awareness and educationto a socially acceptable and normalized pastime.The film and workshop have been developed topromote informed and balanced attitudes and

behaviours towards youth gambling; prevent youth gambling-related healthproblems; protect at-risk youth from gambling-related harm; and decreasenegative attitudes towards problem gamblers. their ultimate standoff. Dolan and Dorval navigate through increasingly vicioustête-à-têtes with delicacy, evoking sympathy for both characters. With confidentdirection (the scene where Hubert makes love to his boyfriend is a standout)and a beautifully rendered performance, Dolan’s arrival on the big screen isan achievement that can’t be ignored. Dick, (Timothy Olyphant) a down-on-his-luck morphine addict is reunited with hisold buddy Bug (Stephen Eric McIntyre), freshout of prison. After Bug helps to get Dickfired, they hatch a drug-addled plan to letthem to live on easy street forever. They planto rip off an ATM on Friday, thinking themachine will be loaded with cash. The best

part is that no one will get shot or die. But these unruly thugs soon findthemselves embroiled in a shootout when they steal an armoured truck. Yates’artful gear shifting between the violence and humour of the stupid acts of hischaracters creates a kind of comedy of agony. It’s truly painful to watch thisgang of losers stumble and fall, bungling their pipe dream of getting filthyrich.
