In 1960, Dr. Albert Weiner was convictedand jailed on nineteen counts ofmanslaughter for injecting patients withsyringes contaminated by hepatitis.Even though disposable syringes hadbeen on the market for several years,most offices still used reusable needlesand syringes at that time. In 2006, theVA hospital recalled hundreds ofpatients for serial HIV and hepatitistesting due to improperly cleanedinstruments. Sterilization of medicalinstruments is a serious business. Mostdoctors and office managers are totallyunaware of this field.

I have been in the practice of OB/GYNfor twenty-four years in a practicefounded by my father fifty-four yearsago. There have been many changes inour practice during this time. My fatherstarted using disposable needles in theearly sixties. Medical waste had to bedisposed of in an appropriate manner.We stopped doing labs in the office dueto onerous regulations and OSHAdeveloped specific guidelines foremployee safety. What aboutsterilization of medical instruments?Essentially this is the final unregulatedfrontier. Methods used for instrumentsterilization in the hospital, which areregulated, expensive, and timeconsuming. These procedures arevirtually impossible to replicate in aclinical setting. However, our instrumentsin the office pose as much of a risk asthose in the hospital.

In the OB/GYN office, our instrumentsare exposed to highly infectious agentssuch as HPV, herpes, hepatitis, and HIV.We are reusing these instruments onpatients and it is very important that wedo not put them at risk. The surest wayto make them safe is to make all theseinstruments disposable.

GYN Disposables was founded in 2005to solve this problem. Our first productwas the cervical tenaculum. We set outnot only to do a disposable version, butto improve the design of this venerablegynecologic instrument. After multipleprototypes and extensive testing forregulatory approval, the first FDAapproved, non-stainless cervicaltenaculum was introduced in 2007. Wefound initial resistance. The tenaculumwas designed so that the patient wouldexperience less pain and bleeding andis different from its metal predecessors.After their initial resistance to change,most users have begun to appreciate itsbenefits.

To help launch the company, I receivedmy MBA in 2006. The business ofmedicine is a serious matter. Mostphysicians have no training in businessmanagement. GYN Disposables in 2007set out to aid the OB/GYN in runningtheir practices more efficiently. “Better,Faster, Cheaper” is the mantra of leanhealth care. To facilitate this goal wehave introduced two kits with more indevelopment. These reduce dozens ofchores better utilizing staff time andreducing cost.

ACOG Endorses Guidelines on HPV VaccinationThe American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists is adding its weight to recommendationsthat 11- and 12-year-old girls be vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV) and that "catch-up"shots are a good idea for unvaccinated teens and young women up to age 26.

In a new statement, ACOG's Committee on Adolescent Health Care also stressed that Pap smears arestill necessary for women starting at 21, even if they've been vaccinated against HPV.
