Site Plan Scale 1:1000

An aerial view

Context

At the southern side of this site, there spreads a gridded ”stone town”, and at the northern side, there is a town consisted of scattered volumes. To connect two sides, volumes are arranged by vertical axis of Sundsvall.

FOYER OF SUNDSVALL

I This New Arts Center & Theater is an irregular gentle curving design with efficient circulation

between quadrilateral volumes.

By dividing the volumes, various spaces are created, and the glass foyer, which connects those

volumes, fades in the surroundings.

The foyer has two characters. “Theater foyer” and “Citizen foyer”. The two types of foyers are distanced,

but connected by the irregular gentle curving glass.

This center is an open architect, therefore, various activities will be available at everywhere such as

theater, hall, foyer, plaza.

Delicate sequence By scattering the volumes throughout the site, it is made possible to fit the size of the theatre to “Sundsvall scale.” Irregular curving glass foyer connects whole volumes in one group.

FOYER OF SUNDSVALL

Two characters of foyer The irregular curving foyer creates a delicate division between the two parts of the Art Center & Theatre. As a result, “Theater foyer” and “Citizen foyer” is created. The “Theatre Foyer” is mainly connected to the theatre volume, and there gather many users of the theatre. On the other hand, the “Citizen Foyer” is connected to the “hall volume”, and people are able to work on various activities.

Spaces and VistaBetween the quadrilateral volumes, there spreads unique spaces, such as river, ocean, trees, and “stone town.” The sequence of the sight continues to the inside of foyer. There are great varieties of views between the volumes. It might not be over to say, that this architect is a “park that fades in the environment of Sundsvall.

Harmony The quadrilateral volumes, which include the function of Art center & Theatre, are arranged to scatter in this site. Therefore, all volumes that include four existing KM buildings are separated. This Art center and KM are harmonized by this proposal.

At winter times, heat, stored by floor concrete, rises and warms the building. At summer times, it is able to discharge rising heat from foyer’ s opening. This heat storage system is an effectual measure in cold districts like Sundsval.
