Omaha, Neb What do you get when you bring together one symphony
orchestra, four professional opera singers and seven high school choirs? The answer
Choral Collaborative. Created through a unique partnership between the Omaha
Symphony and Opera Omaha, this event gives area high school students the
opportunity to receive mentoring opportunities with professional musicians and
participate in the planning and presentation of a professional music concert.
This year, more than 500 choir students from seven area schools Bellevue
East, Bellevue West, Hastings, Fremont, Lincoln Southwest, Papillion-LaVista South,
and Westside will perform selections from a number of favorite opera choruses along
with Verdis Requiem.
To prepare for Choral Collaborative, all of the high school choirs performing the
opera portion of the program each have a diction session with J. Gawf, resident music
director of Opera Omaha, along with an individual rehearsal with Ernest Richardson,
resident conductor of the Omaha Symphony, and the vocal soloists. Then in final

preparation for the event, all seven choirs will join together with the soloists for a
rehearsal with the full orchestra.Choral Collaborative and the opportunity to perform in the Holland Performing
Arts Center is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many of these students, said
Jennifer Boomgaarden, director of education and community partnerships with the
Omaha Symphony. The opportunity to work with a professional opera company and a
professional symphony orchestra is one these students are certain to remember for
many years to come.
The Choral Collaborative concert will take place on Sunday, November 12, at
7:30 p.m. at the Holland Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $10 and are available by
calling 402.342.3836 x107 or at the Omaha Symphony Administrative Office, 1605
Howard Street.
The Omaha Symphony is a non-profit organization, which presents more than 200 live orchestral performances fromSeptember through June. In addition to MasterWorks, Pops, Chamber, Discovery, Light Classics and Family seriesconcerts, the orchestra tours both Nebraska and Iowa providing education and community engagement concerts andspecial events. The 2006/07 season marks the inaugural season for new Music Director Thomas Wilkins.
