Stock market values enjoyed further substan- tial improvement in yesterday's trading, the up- ward movement being helped by aggressive sup- port from the Union Pacific interests and buy- Ing by belated shorts who apparently were thor- oughly discouraged over th« outlook for declin- ing prices. In addition to active buying of the issues which have been the leading favorites in the; last few -weeks ther* -was a good deman.l for recently .inactive shares, including some of th» low priced securities in the railroad lift and a number of industrial stock?, purchases of th» latter indicating tc many minds increased con- fidence among Wall Street houses In a speedy termination of industrial depression. American Sugar Refining, which ranks as one of the stand- ard Industrial investments;' the Copper stocks, American Smeltingr. Republic Iron and Steel and United States Steel w»»re active, strong: features that attracted attention, particularly as th 3 character of trading suggested that a part of th« buying was for something more than a mere turn in the market. The, Harriman. Hill and Reading: Issues again were leaders, but on their advance distributive selling was reported, which, however, failed to maks noteworthy impression on prices, buying by the shorts and inside sup- port offsetting liquidating operations. General trading was heavier than on any preceding day this year, while transactions covered a larger number of securities than. had been recorded in many week?, though of the total dealings of more than 1,200,000 shares the usual speculative stocks like Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, Reading. Great Northern, Northern Pacific, United States St«»el and Amalgamated Copper supplied mom than one-half. The movements in New York Central and Pennsylvania failed to bear out the generous bull tips that have been going the rounds in the last week. Sporadic efforts wei« made In the day by certain traders to bring about lower quotation?, but such attempts gen- erally led to financial losses. Bonds also wera active and strong. The nuccessful financing of th<» needs of sev- eral railroads In the current week and the ex- pectation that th« movement will extend throughout the railway world are factors that encourage confidence, in the future of the trans- portation business, while they suggest that th«i great railway and banking powers of the coun- try believe business activity will be resumed on a large scale at no distant period. "With confi- dence growing in th« belief of better times, cur- rent adverse railroad earning?, poor bank clear- ings and generally unsettled trade conditions fail to worry Wall Street's banking element, but it i* not improbable traders will endeavor to use these matters as arguments for lower prices Just a,s Foon Bfl the current bull cam- paign runs its course. Experienced operators do not venture predictions regarding: the prob- able duration of the present upward movement, j but they do not hesitate, to advise caution because of the. extensive bull account existing in th* market and the wholly manipulative character of the advance. The market is moving under the influence of operations by powerful financial interests who are extremely desirous of creating an active public demand for new securities flo- tations and who also are desirous of increasing bank accounts that were seriously depleted last . October, but evr-n with such » strong hacking ' the advance will not continue indefinitely, while i from now on sharp reactions must be looked for. ' The majority of traders at the moment, are fol- lowing the lead of the Harriman and other | financial interests, and In view of the enormous I credit facilities behind the bull campaign any i other course would appear suicidal. Though th« local banks have lost more than ' J5.000,000 on their operations with the Sub- ; Treasury in th« current week, money rates pho'v ! no change and monetary conditions indicate no ! important development in the. course of loan i quotations for weeks to com". Money is "asy in I most parts of the world. Germany being th« ! chW exception There seems to be no chance j of material improvement in the German situa- ] tion in The near future; and the fact that th*. Bank of England maintains its discount rate at I p«r cent in the face of the heavi*** proportion SECURITIES MOVE UP. FINANCIAL AFFAIRS of reserve to liability in the last decade, -with tho exception of one year, reflects the Berlin position and not conditions in the British cap- ital. Germany will no doubt get most of the, gold now being sent from New York to Paris, and no objection can be made on this side of the water to these shipments if they serve to re- store the financial equilibrium at the German capital. The most encouraging feature of the foreign situation is the Improvement in British consols, which in the last few days have rallied a full point, the movement being helped by the improvement in the position of affairs in India. Though no additional gold engagements were made yesterday, negotiations for further ship- ments were reported, nearly every large banking Interest figuring with its foreign correspondents on the question of exports of the metal. Preceding \Day This Year

Low Priced Issues Active—Money Easy.

Stock market values enjoyed further substan-

tial improvement in yesterday's trading, the up-

ward movement being helped by aggressive sup-

port from the Union Pacific interests and buy-

Ingby belated shorts who apparently were thor-oughly discouraged over th« outlook for declin-ing prices. In addition to active buying of

the issues which have been the leading favoritesin the; last few -weeks ther* -was a good deman.lfor recently .inactive shares, including some of

th» low priced securities in the railroad liftanda number of industrial stock?, purchases of th»

latter indicating tc many minds increased con-

fidence among Wall Street houses In a speedy

termination of industrial depression. AmericanSugar Refining, which ranks as one of the stand-ard Industrial investments;' the Copper stocks,

American Smeltingr. Republic Iron and Steel and

United States Steel w»»re active, strong: featuresthat attracted attention, particularly as th3character of trading suggested that a part of th«buying was for something more than a mere

turn in the market. The, Harriman. Hill andReading: Issues again were leaders, but on theiradvance distributive selling was reported, which,

however, failed to maks noteworthy impression

on prices, buying by the shorts and inside sup-port offsetting liquidating operations. Generaltrading was heavier than on any preceding day

this year, while transactions covered a larger

number of securities than. had been recorded inmany week?, though of the total dealings of morethan 1,200,000 shares the usual speculative stockslike Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, Reading.

Great Northern, Northern Pacific, United StatesSt«»el and Amalgamated Copper supplied momthan one-half. The movements in New YorkCentral and Pennsylvania failed to bear out thegenerous bull tips that have been going therounds in the last week. Sporadic efforts wei«

made In the day by certain traders to bring

about lower quotation?, but such attempts gen-erally led to financial losses. Bonds also weraactive and strong.

The nuccessful financing of th<» needs of sev-eral railroads In the current week and the ex-pectation that th« movement will extendthroughout the railway world are factors thatencourage confidence, in the future of the trans-portation business, while they suggest that th«igreat railway and banking powers of the coun-try believe business activity willbe resumed ona large scale at no distant period. "With confi-dence growing in th« belief of better times, cur-rent adverse railroad earning?, poor bank clear-ings and generally unsettled trade conditionsfail to worry Wall Street's banking element,

but it i* not improbable traders will endeavorto use these matters as arguments for lowerprices Just a,s Foon Bfl the current bull cam-paign runs its course. Experienced operatorsdo not venture predictions regarding: the prob-able duration of the present upward movement, jbut they do not hesitate, toadvise caution becauseof the. extensive bull account existing in th*market and the wholly manipulative characterof the advance. The market is moving underthe influence of operations by powerful financialinterests who are extremely desirous of creatingan active public demand for new securities flo-tations and who also are desirous of increasingbank accounts that were seriously depleted last.October, but evr-n with such » strong hacking

'the advance will not continue indefinitely, whileifrom now on sharp reactions must be looked for.

'

The majority of traders at the moment, are fol-lowing the lead of the Harriman and other |financial interests, and In view of the enormous I

credit facilities behind the bull campaign any iother course would appear suicidal.

Though th« local banks have lost more than'

J5.000,000 on their operations with the Sub- ;Treasury in th« current week, money rates pho'v !no change and monetary conditions indicate no!important development in the. course of loan iquotations for weeks to com". Money is "asy in Imost parts of the world. Germany being th« !chW exception There seems to be no chance j

of material improvement in the German situa- ]tion in The near future; and the fact that th*.Bank of England maintains its discount rate at

Ip«r cent in the face of the heavi*** proportion

SECURITIES MOVE UP.

FINANCIAL AFFAIRSof reserve to liability in the last decade, -withtho exception of one year, reflects the Berlinposition and not conditions in the British cap-ital. Germany will no doubt get most of the,

gold now being sent from New York to Paris,

and no objection can be made on this side of thewater to these shipments if they serve to re-

store the financial equilibrium at the Germancapital. The most encouraging feature of theforeign situation is the Improvement in Britishconsols, which in the last few days have rallieda fullpoint, the movement being helped by theimprovement in the position of affairs in India.Though no additional gold engagements were

made yesterday, negotiations for further ship-

ments were reported, nearly every large bankingInterest figuring with its foreign correspondents

on the question of exports of the metal.
