It is remarkable on designing Braking Resistors

the need of placing them in defined and reduced

places, almost ever impossible to readjust due to

design imperatives of machine to be controlled. i.e.,

traction motors for electric locomotives. This

reduced room and the particular design of it are

essentially enforcing to introduce a forced

ventilation system and a special design of resistive

elements.

Braking Resistors are usually installed:

• On the roof of a vehicle.

• Under trame.

• lnside the vehicle.

The interchange of heat between the resistor

element and the surrounding air can be increased by

the flow of air at ambient temperature, this flow of air

will increase the displacement of hot air and will

achieve in short time a bigger volume of cold air in

contact with the resistor elements and therefore a

higher heat-exchange.

This technique together with installation of resistors

in adequate chosen compartments will allow that

traction type resistors will work at higher

temperatures than the standard’s type. Working

temperature of selected resistive materials will be

above 1000 ºC.

Resistor elements are assembled in banks by means

of strong rods and ceramic spacers. Segments of

resistor banks are mounted in a strong support

frame of stainless steel.

High temperatures require a careful choose of the

insulated materials which directly support the resistive

elements; such insulators must withstand strong and

continuous thermal shocks. Besides, in view that

resistors must be in direct contact with atmosphere,

insulators chooses must have low humidity absorption

value. Stainless steel is also used for bolts, nuts and

washers.

Resistors mounted in motor-powered vehicles are

exposed to sine waves vibrations of variable

amplitude and frequency. KLK, when designing

resistors has consideration the international

standards requirements for vibration and shocks.

Resistors are designed by our team with a

sophisticated 3D model in order to find the best

solution for our Customers. Desing and production,

strictly follows our ISO 9001:2008 quality standards

as well as the most severe internationational

specifications.

A Railway Resistor is a 100% tailor made product,

where a few constructive and technological principles

are applied in a project- specific.
