2010:• Sustainability policy and sustainability action plan for 2010 was agreed by Resources Sub Committee/ Vice

Chancellors Group and Court • Prof Neil Garrod (Deputy Vice Chancellor Resources) identified as VCG champion• Sustainability Projects Officer appointed• Staff Sustainability Champions launched• Biodiversity Steering Group formed

• University has been implementing EcoCampus

• Bronze – achieved July 2010• Silver – achieved June 2011

• We are now working towards the internationally recognised ISO14001 and hope to achieve this by March 2012

An environmental impact is ‘the effect of an activity or substance on the environment.’

The Sustainability Team has identified over 70 environmental impacts caused by the University’s operations.

What are the environmental impacts of the energy we use?

Energy from a non-renewable source:

- Production of CO2 contributes to climate change

- Depletion of finite resources- Production of oxides of nitrogen smog- Production of sulphur dioxide

What is the environmental impact of a bottled water cooler?

- Transportation associated with delivery and collection of plastic bottles.

- Energy required to chill water.- Waste created via disposable cup usage.- Consumption of resources (water, plastic, etc.)- Cleaning of water bottles
