Artist Statement on PracticeProject: While I Am Still (2009 - ongoing)

My project While I Am Still consists is a suite in three parts: In-Sight (Part 1), In-Sight (Part 2), and In-Sight (Part 3).

Within this work, I choose elements that originate as medical imagery, given to me by friends and family members and as private donations to use for this project. The images were selected for both their visual and scientific value (including P.E.T. scans, M.R.I.’s, radiographs, and sonograms) which I then revisit with alternate imaging cameras.

Combined with my personal experience and technical explorations, the resulting works reveal information attained from our bodies that is not visible without the aid of cutting edge technology. Experiencing medical testing on my own body always led my mind to a dream state: while my physical body was engaged and still, my mind traveled. It is from this place the project While I Am Still originates.

Artist Statement on PracticeProject: While I Am Still (2009 - ongoing)

Through photography I embrace science and technology to expose the fragility of our bodies. Although our bodies are impermanent, I remain in awe of human persistence. At the most challenging times in life, we can find the ability to reach beyond our struggles and fears.

While I Am Still sheds light on the beauty and fear that complicate human lives and the search for solid ground. Inspired by an MRI of my own brain, I began to see beauty in medical images; the cold and sterile facts of the film became transformed to aesthetic tonalities of light and color. This experience launched my interest in working with medical imagery, which evolved into a universal examination of the boundaries that exist between art and science.

Comparing what is seen through our unaided eyes versus what is revealed using instruments of high technology never fails to fascinate me and provide new ideas for future imagery.

The figure is the main subject in my photographs because of its connections to our human psyche, which is the primary focus of my work. The natural world is another subject that I often use in my work.

My relationship to nature represents to me not only a place of peace and sanctuary, but also it serves to counterbalance my obsession with scientific objectivism. As an artist, I find insight by reaching inside my mind and my imagination. I also look to the creative and technical work of others in diverse fields for inspiration.

For me, the process of making photographs is often both frightening and calming. I don’t intend for the imagery to provide clarity; rather, it is my hope that my photographs will inspire questions.

Combining my personal experience and technical explorations, the resulting works reveal information attained from our bodies that is not visible without the aid of cutting edge technology.

This project is collaborative. As this project is ongoing, I am seeking donations of medical images to repurpose in my artwork. Although medical testing often originates from accident or illness, I feel that the work from the project While I Am Still can aid the process of healing, whether by understanding what lies beneath the surface of our bodies, or having the strength to confront one's fears
