1.1. THE CITY OF CHIAVARI:

Chiavari is a picturesque seaside town on the Italian Riviera, situated between le

Cinque Terre and Portofino in the centre of the Tigullio Golf. It is surrounded by the

natural beauty of Mediterranean vegetation, while the deep blue sea presents a striking

contrast with the soft green olive and pine trees, creating a truly delightful landscape. In

the old part of the town, you can find the famous “Carruggio”, a beautiful pedestrian

street characterised by its famous typical arcades. It provides the perfect setting for elegant

and exclusive shops. Also a bustling market is held in the city centre every Friday.

Other attractions include the tourist port, Chiavari’s private beaches and the newly-

designed promenade with fountains and activities for children.

Chiavari also has some pretty parks the biggest of which is the beautiful botanical

garden Villa Rocca in the heart of the town.

In addition the Ligurian Coast is known for its mild climate and the long sunny

days. The average temperature is 16 degrees in winter, 24 degrees in summer.

1.2. THE SURROUNDINGS

In the vicinity of Chiavari you can discover enchanting tourist resorts and

magical marine landscapes. The nearest end most famous and beautiful tourist resorts

are Portofino, Santa Margherita Ligure, Rapallo, Camogli, Le Cinque Terre,

Sestri Levante, Portovenere …

Le Cinque Terre for example are five picturesque villages in a hilly landscape,

their pastel-coloured houses perched between the verdant vegetation and the blue sea,

can be reached via an unforgettable walk across the stunning cliffs above the sea.

Chiavari’s perfect strategic position makes it possible to easily reach some of the

most popular Italian cities by fast train:

Genoa: 40 km.

Pisa: 110 km.

Milan: 180 km.

Florence: 185 km.

Rome: 545 km.

2. THE LANGUAGE SCHOOL NEL BLU:

“Nel Blu”, inaugurated 8 January 2004, is a flexible and dynamic language

school, situated in the pretty historical town centre of Chiavari, just a few minutes from

the beach. We are open all year round and organise group courses as well as individual

lessons for all levels for students, tourists and professionals.

Since our opening students of various ages and nationalities have visited our school.

Due to the fact that our students come from nearly all parts of the world to learn Italian

you will experience a multicultural atmosphere. This is not only very exiting but also

leads to a better achievement of the Italian language as the students tend to speak less

in their mother tongue, but have to communicate in Italian.

Nel Blu is officially certified by the Italian Ministry of Education and accredited by the

National Swedish Further Education Council (CSN) as well as by the Land of Hamburg

(Germany). Furthermore we collaborate with the University of Genoa, offer

preparation for CELI, CILS and PLIDA language exams and provide assistance in visa

matters for our students.

Chiavari and our school are easily accessible by different means of transport: the

nearest train station (Chiavari) is 200 metres, the nearest airport (Genoa) 40 kilometres

away and the nearest Coast Port is 250 metres away.

3.1. OUR COURSES

Our school is open all year round and courses of any level start every Monday.

Lessons are held from Monday to Friday, from 9.30 to 12.30 in the morning and from

13.30 in the afternoon (for the intensive courses).

“Nel Blu” offers two different types of group courses: (1 lesson = 55’ minutes)

- Standard course (15 lessons per week)

9.30-10.55 + 11.05-12.30

- Intensive course (20 lessons per week)

9.30-10.55 + 11.05-12.30 + 13.30-14.30

The first lesson deals with grammar (9.30/10.55), whereas the second lesson is based on

conversation (11.05/12.30) and is followed by a coffee-break. The third lesson of

the intensive courses (13.30/14.30) includes grammar, conversation, games, role-plays,

simulated situations (restaurant, bar, etc), informative tours of the city, cookery and

local recipes, etc.

All courses start on Monday, at 9.30 a.m. At the beginning of the course, our students

are given a written and oral test to complete, in order to assess their level of Italian. A

textbook that can be kept after the course, is given to every student after the test.

Absolute beginners start without a placement test on Monday, at 9.30 a.m.

All our teachers are highly qualified native Italian speakers. Their competence and

professionalism guarantee lessons of the highest quality. Working in a small group

(max 8 students, 10 in summer) of mixed nationalities, you will experience a variety of

teaching methods in which cognitive, communicative, spontaneous and creative

elements are combined.

At different times from the above mentioned courses, we also offer individual

lessons. These lessons are very useful for those who need or wish to express themselves

as fluently as possible in Italian, in shortest time.

3.2. ACCOMMODATION

We can arrange three different types of accommodation for you:

In Apartments in local Italian houses:

You will stay in a nice single room, sharing kitchen and bathroom with

other students. The apartments are furnished, comfortable and located

near the school.

In Italian host families with breakfast only or half-board:

Our friendly Italian families will be happy to welcome you as their

guest and provide you with delicious and traditional Italian food. So you

can discover the local recipes of the world’s most famous cuisine.

We recommend a family stay as a very effective way

of learning the language.

In Hotels near our school:

From a wide choice of comfortable, friendly hotels we will find the

most suitable for you, according to your requirements. We will make

the booking for you providing the hotel staff with your personal

details required and the length of your stay so that

checking-in will be really easy for you.

4.2. PAYMENT

The invoice amount, including the total cost of the course and supplementary charges

(e.g. accommodation) has to be paid in Euro within 30 days prior to commencement of

the course. If you register for a course at a later date, immediate payment is required.

Usually payment is effected by bank transfer stating your name and “Corso di

Italiano”. Bank charges are at your expense.

Payment can also be made by credit card (Visa, Mastercard). Therefore, please, send us

your credit card details. The credit card fee is 5 % of the invoice amount.

4.3. CANCELLATION OF COURSES

Cancellations always have to be sent in written form.

Cancellations received up to 30 days prior to commencement of course:

- are subject to loss of the enrolment fee (50€) and cost of apartment or family

accommodation. For accommodation in hotels the conditions of the hotel

are valid.

- The cost of the course will be refunded.

Cancellations received up to 15 days prior to commencement of course:

- are subject to loss of the enrolment fee (50€) and cost of apartment or family

accommodation. For accommodation in hotels the conditions of the hotel

are valid.

- 50% of the amount paid for the course will be refunded.

For cancellations received after the period of 15 days prior to commencement

of course no refund is made.

There will not be any surcharges, if the student who has cancelled sends us another

person taking his place.

5. Your arrival

Arrival is foreseen on Sunday prior to commencement of course, between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. (17.00 h and 20.00 h).

Students who opt for accommodation in an apartment have to come to the

school, where they will be welcomed and provided with the apartment details and the keys.

Students who opt for a host family stay can go directly to the family’s house by taxi or on foot. The address of the family and instructions how to reach it are

given to him before his arrival. Students who choose to stay at a hotel, can also reach the hotel directly after their arrival in Chiavari, e.g. by taxi. The hotel details are given to the student

immediately after the booking.

You should notify us your exact arrival time about a week before your arrival date, so we will be able to arrange all necessary points and you can be optimally welcomed. Also if you have any special requirements or difficulties, you should let us know a

week prior to your arrival and we will try our best to comply with your requirements and to solve any problems related to your journey and stay.
